Volunteer Position: Welcoming Neighbour: English Conversation Circle

Applications are due Monday January 3rd at 5pm.

In order to serve the needs of the Westside community, literacy programs are
offered to newcomers so that they can improve their English language skills and
knowledge of community resources. English conversation circle leads plan and
facilitate groups of newcomers in weekly conversation groups.

Welcoming Neighbours volunteers will participate in a 13 hour training program in


the areas of community literacy, diversity and volunteer skills.

Qualifications:

Personable and outgoing


Fluent in English
Knowledgeable about cultural differences and barriers to participation
18+ years

Time Commitment:

6 months minimum. 2-3 hours/week.

Deliverables:

Active participation in Welcoming Neighbours volunteer training (Saturday


January 15th, 22nd & 29th)

Planning and facilitating English conversation groups

Accountability:

The volunteer will report to Emily Palmer, Volunteer & Literacy Coordinator
Recognition:

Upon successful completion of the work, the project supervisor will provide
references

Volunteer placements are consensually arrived at, based on the needs of the community and the
house, and take into consideration the volunteer’s interests, skills, experience and availability.

cross-cultural activities for newcomers on the Westside and pursue out-reach to
newcomers in the community. Socials and out-trips occur 2-3 times a month.

Welcoming Neighbours volunteers will participate in a 13 hour training program in


the areas of community literacy, diversity and volunteer skills.

Qualifications:

Personable and outgoing


Fluent in English; Fluency in a second language preferred.
18+ years
Knowledgeable about resources in the community
Connected to newcomers in the community
Knowledgeable about cultural differences and barriers to participation

Time Commitment:

Support of Welcoming Neighbours socials & out-trips pre, during and post
events. Tasks are based on the facilitator’s needs and interests/ skills of
volunteers
Attendance at Welcoming Neighbours Volunteer Training & socials and out-trips

Accountability:

The volunteer will report to Patricia Paz, Welcoming Neighbours Program


Facilitator and Vinyse Barber, Welcoming Neighbours Volunteer Facilitator

Recognition:
