OBSERVANCE OF WORLD TOURISM DAY BY DSDA IN DIGHA

Many people around celebrate the World Tourism Day which is on September 27 each
year. The day aims to foster awareness among the international community of the
importance of Tourism and its social, Cultural, political and economic values.

Digha is a sea side resort town in the State West Bengal. It lies in Purba Medinipur
District and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It is renowned for its beaches. The
present Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee’s dream of converting Digha into Goa is
fast gathering place. The 2012 World Tourism Day in West Bengal would be celebrated
under the theme “Dream – Green & Clean”.

Tourism generates many more jobs for relatively less investment. It is capable of creating
large-scale employment opportunities, particularly in rural and backward areas where
there are many attractive sites for tourists. It is, potentially, the biggest generator of
foreign exchange. Truly speaking, tourism is a non-polluting industry but due to lack of
awareness we end up in polluting the tourist places. Tourism is increasingly playing a
major role in contributing to the overall growth and sustainability of destinations and
local communities by creating direct and indirect jobs. Therefore it is a important sector in
the services economy. Apart from economic benefits, Tourism brings together people of
different cultures and regions and fosters better mutual understanding. Peace and
Harmony are the two requirements for Effective and Durable Tourism. It is, therefore,
rightly said that tourism is the greatest peace movement in the world.

Keeping all the above in mind the Digha Sankarpur Development Authority wel coming
all to visit Digha and enjoy the festival to be held in connection with observing and
celebrating the World Tourism Day on 27th September 2012. Apart from arranging
cultural functions, sports etc. Digha Sankarpur Development Authority has proposed to
launch competitions in writing of essays, Paintings on Green & Clean Digha and what
more can be done for promoting tourism.
