Boiler Operation General Safety and SAFETY valves

1. General rules for operation of rotating machines

The newly installed or maintained rotating machines shall be trial operated. Its operation
shall be satisfactory and accepted before it is put into operation or standby condition.

1.1 Check before startup of rotating machine

(1) Anchor bolts of all motors and rotating machines shall be tightened. Guard
for exposed shaft end and handrail are com plete and secure and coupling is
well connected.

(2) Motor insulation check is accepted, junction box, cable head, motor earth wire
and emergency button are intact and motor and its driven machines should operate
in unattended condition.

(3) Lighting around the equipment is sufficient and good, site is clean and free
from dust deposit, ash deposit and water accumulation and all manholes and
inspection holes are closed.

(4) Cooling water devices for bearings and motors are in good condition, cooling
water supply is smooth and sufficient and ventilation is satisfactory without
obstruction.

(5) All bearing pedestals and hydraulic couplings have normal oil level and good
oil quality, sight glass and oil level line are clear and no oil leakage exists.

(6) All instruments are in good condition and have correct indication, protection
and program control devices are complete and adjusting damper and its
drive mechanism is tested and accepted.

1.2 Trial operation of rotating machines

(1) A newly installed or overhauled rotating machine shall undergo individual

trial operation before the motor is coupled to the mechanical part. Only after it is
checked that rotating direction and emergency switch are correct and reliable, can
it be trial operated with the machine.

(2) Turn the coupling for 1~2 revolutions to make sure that the machine is normal
and flexible.

(3) Conduct the first startup. When the rotating machine reaches the full speed,
stop it by using the emergency button, observe bearing and rotating part and
record coasting time. Note starting current, starting time and return current
value on the panel and confirm that all are normal before formal startup.
(4) When trial operating with machine, gradually increase load to the rating. The
current shall not exceed the limit. Check for rubbing, collision and other abnormal
sound. No bearing is allowed to leak oil and water. Bearing temperature rises
stably in the specified range and vibration and runout values are both in the
specified range. Motor current is normal and there are no burnt odor and spark.

(5) The fan should not start with load and rotating machines such as pump should
not start and operate without load.

(6) Requirement for trial operation time of rotating machines: ≮ 8h for newly
installed machines, usually ≥2h for overhauled machines and ≮1h in special cases.

(7) When the rotating machine is in trial operation, the operator on duty at 0m
should check it more closely and report trial operation condition to the main operator
on duty or shift supervisor.

1.3 Acceptance criteria for trial operation of rotating machines

(1) Rotating direction is correct, current is normal, load adjustment is flexible

and accurate and damper actuator is not seized.

(2) Bearing and rotating part has no abnormal sound.7

(3) Bearing oil level is normal without oil and water leakage and cooler is complete
and in good condition. For the bearings with oil ring, the oil ring operates
normally.

(4) Bearing temperature and vibration should conform to the manufacturer’s

regulations. Without the manufacturer’s regulations, the following criteria shall be
met:

(5) For sliding bearing, the temperature should not exceed 70℃ for machine side
and 80℃ for motor side.

(6) For rolling bearing, the temperature should not exceed 80℃ for machine side and
100℃ for motor side.

(7) The vibration value measured on each bearing should not exceed the following
values:
1.4 In one of the following cases, operation of the auxiliary machine should be
stopped immediately:

(1) Personal injury accident occurs and the danger can not be removed.

(2) Excessive vibration occurs and equipment may be damaged.

(3) Bearing temperature rises abnormally and exceeds the specified value.

(4) Motor rotor and stator rub severely or motor has smoke and fire.

(5) Rotor and casing of auxiliary machines rub or collide with each other severely.

(6) Auxiliary machine has fire or is in water.

1.5 If the accident button is pressed at local, after the stop, do not reset immediately
to prevent the centralized control room from reclosing, and reset the accident button after
the fault is processed.

1.6 Regulations for forced power supply to the tripped rotating machine:

(1) When a large motor trips, it is necessary to investigate the cause and not
allowed to rush to switch it on in order to prevent equipment damage.

(2) Standby machine should be started if there is a standby one.

(3) When trip of low voltage equipment affects safe operation, it is allowed to
supply power forcibly only once and the second time is allowed and the electric
personnel should be notified of investigating the cause.
2.Safety valve

The safety valve is one of the important safety accessories for the boiler. Safety valves have
heavy hammer type, spring and pulsed types. Our power plant use the spring type safety valve.
