Name of Work:
Change in Nomenclature:
It is one of the important Major District Road in Madurai District. This road
is branching from Km 13/0 of Madurai – Palamedu Road (MDR - 227), which
crosses at km 417/8 of Srinagar – Kanyakumari road (NH – 7) and ends at Km
0/8 of Sholavandan – Valayapatti (via) Aundipatti Road (MDR - 568). This road is
having a total length of 15.320 Km from Km 0/0 – 15/320
The stretches in Km 0/0 – 6/6 of this road is being maintained by Madurai
west (H), Construction & Maintenance Sub Division and the stretches in Km 6/6
– 15/320 of this road is being maintained by Vadipatti (H), Construction &
Maintenance Sub Division of Madurai (H), Construction & Maintenance Division.
This road is originating from Madurai – Palamedu Road (MDR - 227) and passes
through the villages such as Ariyur, Pillayarnatham, Ambalathadi, Vayalur,
Anaikkulam, Sithalangudi, Rayapuram, Thirumalnatham, Alankottaram and
crosses Srinagar – Kanyakumari road (NH – 7) at Km 9/4 and also ends at km
15/320 in Sholavandan Township of Madurai District. These villages are playing
a vital role in supply of agricultural products to the part of the district and also
the surplus agricultural products and cattle are export to the other nearer
districts from these villages. This road acts as one of the important link road which
connects the famous Kuruvithurai temple Pilgrim Centre and Anaippatti Anjeneya
Temple pilgrim centre with National Highways Road, namely Srinagar –
Kanyakumari road (NH – 7)). This road is an important link road connecting
Sholavandan Township with Alanganallur, Palamedu and Anaiyur townships
which are acts as a major agricultural trade points of Madurai District. There are
many private metal and gravel quarries are situated in and around this road and
hence heavy vehicles such as Commercial Transport Vehicles are plying through
this road. The sand carrying vehicles are using this road for their daily routine.
This routine makes this road keeps busy day and night. Hence the traffic intensity
is increasing day by day. Further nearest traffic intensity at Km 9/4 of this road
is 951 CVPD and the PCU is 9112 and at km 12/4 of this road is 900 CVPD and
the PCU is 9021 on May 2014.
The existing carriage way width of this stretch is having 7.00m in km 0/0 –
15/320 which is in damaged condition with many potholes making a traffic
hindrance to the Road Consumers. Frequently accidents take place due to the
damaged nature. Hence it is very essential to improve this road as per IRC 37 –
2012 & IRC 81 - 1997 to cater free flow of vehicular traffic.
Traffic Census:
The Traffic Census has been carried out at Km 9/4 & 12/4 and the
results tabulated below:
Location of Period of Commercial Vehicle Peak /
PCU
Census Point Census per Day Normal
The existing road in this stretch in km 0/0 – 15/320 is having Two Lane
with Single carriage way of 7.00 M and also the existing pavement of this stretch
is renewed in the year 2011 - 2012 under the scheme of CRF 2011 – 2012.
The road is available with a worn-out condition in many stretches and
many potholes, undulations and structural cracks were formed throughout the
stretches of the road makes the poor riding quality of the road surface and it
leads traffic hindrance and accidents. In stretches 0/0 – 9/4 BBD test is unable
to conduct due to the worn-out condition of the rod. So, the CBR Method is
adopted in this Estimate.

Rutting Criteria
The limiting vertical compressive strain at the top of the sub grade is
calculated for the design traffic (Nr) for 90% reliability equation in case of design
traffic more than 30msa, otherwise, calculated for 80% reliability equation.
The limiting horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the bituminous
layer and the vertical compressive strain at the top of the subgrade are checked
with the allowable strains for the standard axial load using IITPAVE for safety and
economy.
For Strengthening by CBR Method:
In Reach 0/0 – 9/4:
Hence, Existing BT Thickness is not considered for Crust Thickness in the stretches in Km 0/0 – 9/4.
