JESUS RAMON O. MAMON JESUS J. MADERAZO ANTONIO G. DE UBAGO JR. KERBY G. CHUA
Vice-President for Racing VP-Business Development Internal Auditor Corporate Secretary
It seems that just yesterday, Putch Puyat and I were discussing the best ways to help improve
Philippine thoroughbred racing and breeding, and after much study and research, we came up with
the concept of the MARHO Breeders’ Cup program.
The program’s aim was to bring racing and breeding closer to international standards. Its
objectives were to provide incentives for local breeders to improve bloodstock in the country, and for
racehorse owners to bring up their runners to championship standards.
Fourteen years have passed since the first MARHO Breeders’ Cup event was held in 1996 at the
old Santa Ana Park in Makati City. It was a simple, low-key affair. But we of the MARHO vowed to
sustain it so that its long-term goals would be met.
Today, I am gratified to see how well the MARHO’s vision for an incentive program has suc-
ceeded. The MARHO Breeders’ Cup is now an annual tradition eagerly awaited by participants and
aficionados. Thanks to the leadership of MARHO through the years, which has not wavered from this
path, the program is stronger than ever, offering bigger prizes. Its prestige is now such that a MARHO
Breeders’ Cup trophy is one of the most coveted by breeders and owners.
All this, though, is icing on the cake. For the truly significant results of the MBC program are
intangible. Among them, the discernable improvement in track times, showing an improvement in the
quality of local-bred runners; the camaraderie that ensues as MARHO members and directors work
together to stage the event, and fellow horseowners rally round to support as best they can; the enjoy-
ment that racing fans derive from watching the championship races.
To all who have supported the MARHO Breeders’ Cup through the years, please accept the
deep and sincere thanks of MARHO directors and members.
We welcome everyone to this year’s staging, made even more memorable by this being MAR-
HO’s 35th anniversary year. Together, let us celebrate milestones, accomplishments, fellowship, and
the horses that have brought us all together here, for one week of friendly competition, as we set our
sights ever higher.
LEONARDO M. JAVIER Jr.
Chairman
Once more, it is time for the eagerly anticipated MARHO Breeders’ Cup Racing Festival, all
the more memorable this year for coinciding with MARHO’s Jade Anniversary celebration.
Knowing that the objectives of the MARHO Breeders’ Cup are noble and worthy, with the
best interests of the Philippine thoroughbred industry at heart, MARHO directors and members
have always made an effort to hold this event that is much-awaited by participants and racing fans
alike.
In the face of industry challenges, and concerns of greater national impact such as the re-
cent devastating typhoons, MARHO has forged ahead with its commitment to its members and the
thoroughbred community in general to stage what is still the prestigious horseracing festival on
the calendar.
We extend our sincere thanks to our loyal and generous sponsors for helping us sustain this
event – foremost among them Amb. Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr., the founder of MARHO. His San
Miguel Corporation has consistently supported this event since it was first held fourteen years ago.
To the Philippine Racing Commission and its present chairman, Atty. Jose Ferdinand M.
Rojas, and its Commissioners, our gratitude for the sponsorships extended warmly and readily;
and to the Philippine Racing Club, for the unstinting cooperation rendered as they provide venue
and racetrack facilities and assistance with logistics to make sure that every year’s MARHO Breed-
ers’ Cup event is successful. We also thank all our other sponsors.
We also welcome the participation of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office as they hold
their historic Diamond Anniversary races on MARHO Saturday.
We wish participants the best of luck, and to guests and viewers, may you enjoy racing at its
finest this MARHO Jade Breeders’ Cup week!
BENHUR C. ABALOS
President
Welcome to the MARHO Jade Breeders’ Cup championships!
It is with great pride and pleasure that I look back down the corridor of years at how this
incentive program for the development of the Philippine thoroughbred industry emerged as a
humble attempt to contribute positively to the industry, to what it has now become.
Through the hard work of MARHO leaders and the support of its members, the program I
helped conceptualized during my years of service to the organization is still in place and as strong
as ever. Even in times of hardship and adversity, MARHO holds true to its vow to pursue activities
that benefit the industry as a whole.
My gratitude goes to the participants, sponsors and aficionados that support this event;
without them the continued success of the MARHO Breeders’ Cup would not have been attained.
And on this historic occasion, the 35th anniversary of the MARHO, I invite all everyone
to celebrate this milestone, witness exciting races, and look forward to better times for the entire
Philippine thoroughbred community.
ARISTEO G. PUYAT
President Emeritus
The MARHO Breeders’ Cup is more than just a horse race – it has become a
tradition and one of the Philippines’ premier horseracing events, drawing elite local-
bred competitors such as Don Enrico, Shining Fame, and defending champion Es
Twenty Six in the San Miguel Beer Classic event, and proven performers such as Heaven
Sent and EJ’s Magic in the other races.
With a tough field of horses and so many deserving entries, this year’s MARHO
Breeders’ Cup Championships is certain to be exciting as ever, allowing us to admire the
compelling nature of the sport and the beauty of the country’s top racing champions and
thoroughbreds. This event is all the more special since it is held during MARHO’s 35th
anniversary year.
I wish MARHO a happy Jade Anniversary. My hope is that the MARHO tradition
never wanes and that horse racing fever spreads across the Philippines.
My warmest congratulations to the organizers for another successful championship
event. I look forward to seeing you at the races.
This year marks two important milestones in the history of MARHO – its 35th
Anniversary, and the 14th running of the MARHO Breeders’ Cup championship races.
MARHO has consistently shown its firm commitment to the upliftment of the
sport and business of Philippine horseracing through its dedicated perseverance in hold-
ing the MARHO Breeders’ Cup each year in the face of myriad challenges.
Philracom is pleased to support this worthy endeavor that contributes many ben-
efits to the industry and its stakeholders.
In behalf of the Commissioners, officers, and staff, I extend warmest congratula-
tions on this memorable day to the officers and members of the MARHO. Happy Jade
Anniversary, and here’s to more productive and fruitful years as an organization!
MESSAGE
The Philippine Racing Club, Incorporated takes pride in hosting this year’s MARHO Jade
Breeders’ Cup Racing Festival on November 24 – 29, 2009 which marks the debut running of
the horse racing industry’s biggest event in the new Santa Ana Park Naic racecourse. Indeed, the
MARHO Breeders’ Cup has been one of the most awaited annual racing events in Santa Ana Park by
the bayang karerista for the past thirteen years and we are honored to host its fourteenth running
which also coincides with MARHO’s 35th founding anniversary.
This year’s celebration will surely delight local racing fans as the best locally-bred horses
compete for several titles. But more than the titles and purses that this particular festival mean to
the entries, the MARHO Breeders’ Cup serves as a showcase of the progress that local race horse
breeding has achieved in this country. The long line of racing champions bred locally will attest to
this. We join the industry in commending MARHO for giving this aspect of local horse racing, the
horse breeding part, its proper recognition and incentive.
We at PRCI welcome all race participants and racing fans to the Santa Ana Park Naic
racecourse for the week-long celebration of the 14th MARHO Jade Breeders’ Cup and we extend our
best wishes to the directors and members of MARHO for another successful racing festival.
