Presentation by M. Hussain
DG / RDSO
Objective
✓ Doubling of Average Speed of Freight Trains

✓ Increasing the speed of Passenger trains by 25 Kmph

✓ Target : 2022
Current Scenario
Average Speeds -

▪ Mail Express – 50.9 Km/hr

▪ Passenger – 33.9 Km/hr
▪ Freight Trains – 24.0 Km/hr

(Reference: Indian Railways Year Book 2016-17)

Speed Correlation Chart
Infrastructure requirements & status on IR
(Speed upto 160 kmph)
SN Feature Status
1. Automatic Train Protection • TCAS under trial - SCR (250 Kms)
• TPWS on Gatimaan route
2. Minimum Track Structure • 60 kg 90 UTS, PSC at 1660, total
300 mm & 150 mm clean cushion
3. Thick Web Switches • On Gatimaan route

4. Weldable CMS (cast manganese steel) • On Gatimaan route

crossing
5. Grade separation & fencing • In progress , as sanctioned
6. Strengthening of weak formation stretches • 1470 Km out of 9770 Km
identified
7. GSM-R • On trial between Delhi – Howrah
25 Watts VHF sets • Available
8. Trials with Instrumented Measuring Wheels • Work sanctioned, Under process

9. Curve realignment • Curves more than 0.9 Deg will

need realignment as per site
conditions
SN Feature Status

10. 50 kmph speed on 1:12 turnout with thick web • Under approval at Board
switch
11. Platform lines with BLT – IFS (Ballast less track • Under trial in BPL division
with Indigenous Fastening system) with LWR on
turnouts
12. Line side condition monitoring of rolling stock • 15 WILD already installed
• OMRS under prove out
13. Right powering of freight trains using Distributed • DPCS technology inducted
Power Control System (DPCS) (20 pairs)
14. Enhancing vision capability for crew during Fog • Trial planned in Dec-2018

15. Double Distant • Provided at 959 Stations

16. EI/PI/RRI • 5770 stations are provided
with EI/PI/RRI
17. Block Proving Axle Counter (BPAC) • Provided at 5058 Block
sections
Maintenance Essentials for Speeds upto 160 kmph

TRACK MONITORING

1. TRC run Once in 2 months

(Track Recording Car)
2. OMS Monthly peak values > 0.15 g to be reported
(Oscillation Monitoring Recording to be done at Max. Permissible Speed
System)
3. Oscillograph Car Run Once in 4 months at MPS

4. Track maintenance C&M I – Vol-I Standards & IRPWM for gauge

ROLLING STOCK HEALTH MONITORING

1. Predictive Maintenance (Trending by WILD, Online Monitoring of Rolling

Stock (OMRS), Onboard Health Monitoring System (OBHMS), Camera Vision)
2. GPS based Vehicle Tracking & RFID based Auto vehicle identification
Rolling Stock certification for enhanced speed
• Following trials required
a) Oscillation trial,
b) Emergency Braking Distance,
c) Coupler force and
d) Controllability trials

Guidelines & Specifications for Design of formation

• Insertion of Blanket layer (Thickness as per RDSO guidelines)

• Attention to Deficient cess & slide slopes
• Replacement of clayey soil with good quality earth (CBR>5%)
• Use of reinforced earth
• Reinforcing material – Geo-textile, Geo-grid, Geo-membrane ,
Geo-net, Geo-composite etc.
