In keeping with current practice in standards published by the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO), a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker.
Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewindeeinsätze of the Normenausschuss
Mechanische Verbindungselemente (Fasteners Standards Committee).
Amendments
This standard differs from the October 1988 edition in that it has been editorially revised and the specifica-
tions for d 1 and the number of turns for sizes M14 and M16 have been harmonized with international
standards.
Previous edition
DIN 8140-1: 1988-10.
1 Scope
Normen-Download-Beuth-Siemens AG PG S32T.1/Normung-KdNr.108369-LfNr.2738549001-2005-03-18 13:05
This standard specifies dimensions and technical delivery conditions for wire thread inserts (‘thread inserts’,
for short) which serve to produce high-strength, wear-resistant internal screw threads in metallic and non-
metallic components. They are also used to repair damaged threads and to replace threads worn in service.
Thread inserts reduce the susceptibility of bolted connections to cold welding. They are resistant to the
effects of high and low temperatures and to corrosion and ensure a constant coefficient of friction.
2 Normative references
This standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These
normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the titles of the publications are
listed below. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications
apply to this standard only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the
latest edition of the publication referred to applies.

4.6 Finish
The surface of thread inserts shall be bright, except for type B inserts, where it shall be red.
5 Designation
Designation of a thread insert of type A, for thread size M6, made of grade A2 steel and with a nominal length,
l1, of 12 mm:
Thread insert DIN 8140 – A M6 × 12 – A2
If thread inserts are to be supplied with left-hand thread, the symbol LH shall be included in the designation
(cf. DIN 962).
Thread insert DIN 8140 – A M6 LH × 12 – A2

EXAMPLE:
6 Service temperatures
Thread inserts as specified in this standard are designed for use at temperatures in the range from –40 °C to
+300 °C.
7 User information
7.1 Core hole
Core hole diameters (d2) are given in tables 2, 3, 4 and 5. The core holes should not be countersunk, since tapped
holes without countersink facilitate the introduction of the thread inserts.
Where countersinking is indispensable (e.g. in the case of sealing faces that cannot be finished), the maximum
countersink diameter shall be equal to the major diameter of the tapped hole.
threads of sizes M12 × 1, M14 × 1,25, M24 × 1,5, M26 × 1,5, M30 × 1,5, M36 × 2, and M39 × 2.

8 Indication on drawings
8.1 Tapped holes
The tapped hole shall be indicated on the drawing by the DIN number and a symbol, as specified in figure 6.
Explanatory notes
DIN 8140-1 and DIN 8140-2 have been prepared on the basis of standards published in other countries
(e.g. British Standard BS 4377), standards issued by the Normenstelle Luftfahrt (Aerospace Standards Com-
mittee), and works standards of a number of German manufacturers, the aim being to harmonize the specifi-
cations for tapped holes, the associated tolerances, and the product specifications for thread inserts.
Users of this standard should note the following.
a) Tolerance class 6H as specified here is the tolerance class for the thread insert after assembly. However,
in DIN 8140-2, the tolerance class for the pitch diameter of the tapped hole has been denoted as 6 H mod to
indicate that the tolerance values deviate from those given in DIN ISO 965-1. These ‘modified’ values are
also specified in other national standards and works standards.
b) Although tolerance class 4H ‘fine’ is specified in aerospace standards for thread inserts, such narrow
tolerances are both impractical and unnecessary for general applications.
c) Tables 3 and 5 of this standard include a number of screw threads which do not conform with series 1
threads as specified in DIN 13-1 and DIN 13-3 and the use of which is not recommended. In DIN 8140-2, the
associated tapped holes, the use of which is also not recommended, have been listed in a separate table.
This table also specifies a number of tapped holes for which no inserts have been standardized, as they are
not commonly used. These tapped holes have nevertheless been included in DIN 8140-2 in order to provide
specifications for the user of such screw threads.
d) This standard gives examples for the indication of thread inserts and tapped holes on drawings. Inter-
national Standard ISO 6410-2 : 1993, which has been approved as a European Standard, also deals with this
subject.
