Electricity Generation using Gravity Lamp

Abstract— In this paper, In the recent time due to effect of
pollution and global warming there is a need for
generating power from renewable source. The reason for
generating power using gravity is that it is an available
all over the earth, abundant and consistent too. In this
project, the model for gravity lamp is designed and
gravitational energy further amplified in terms of its
magnitude by using perpetual motion mechanism. Hence
generated energy can successfully transform into stable
electrical energy.

I. INTRODUCTION
“World without light can be considered as a world
without life”. Energy, power, light and various other
aspects are the key which are responsible for the
successive development of any nation. If directed in
the proper direction can lead a part of wellbeing else
it would be wastage of infinite source of energy.
Several thousands of years of buildings construction
where number of civilizations and cultures showed
an extra-ordinary architectural design structure
which build a relation between outdoor as well as
indoor environment which developed a sense of
responsibility.
Approximately 20% of the world’s population is of
grid(having no access to mains power).This situation
is not set to change in the near future, according
tothe world bank and WHO, and it is identify as a
major obstacle to the proliferation of education, and
recognize as limiting factor for growth in developing
economies. The vast proportion of existing solution
for the heat and light in remote, off-grid, areas rely
on biomass.
Electricity is one of the basic need without which
development is not possible. Numbers indicate and
estimated 1.2billion people did not have access to
electricity, more than 95% of those living without
electricity are in Sub-Saharan Africa and developing
Asia. In such areas people still use kerosene

lamp,biomass which is expensive and pollute
atmosphere. Kerosene lamps are hazardous to health
and environment. Fumes which are raised from
burning of biomass fuels can cause cataracts and eye
infections.
It is estimated that yearly almost 2.5million people
suffers due to kerosene. So to provide lighting in
such area is a key challenge. The problem with other
renewable energy source like solar, wind is that they
vary from location to location and based on the
climatic condition. The proposed model of gravity
light does not require any form of energy.
II. THEORY
2. Concept for Mechanism of Gravity Light
A suitable mechanism for the working of the gravity
light was to be selected. After considering a number
of designs and discarding a few we came up with
three major design concepts which can be used for
generating electricity.
Following are the concepts:-
2.1 Spring Actuated Gravity Lamp
The weight is attached to a rope which is wound
over a pulley whose centre consists of a spring
which is normally unwound. The spring is fitted on
to a shaft through a slot in the shaft and is wound
over the shaft. The winding of the spring causes the
spring to compress under tension and rotate the shaft
along with the winding action. This rotates the
pulley and the weight ascends. After a certain height
an initial tension is given to the spring and the spring
starts unwinding slowly at a constant rate depending
on the weight attached to the rope end. The force of
the unwinding force rotates the shaft and helps
control the decent rate of the weight.
2.2 Counter Weight Type Gravity Lamp
This employs the use of counter weight principle for
lowering the weight and in turn maintains a control

on the descent rate of the falling weight. If the
weight is to be lifted is ‘x’ then the counter weight
that must be added so that the weight just start
descend ‘x+0.9’. The weight will be attached to the
rope of a pulley and this pulley will be mounted over
a shaft which will be connected to the motor shaft
producing electricity.
2.3 Bicycle Wheel Type Gravity Lamp
This concept is the most practical one of the three
and it involves a rim of a bicycle wheel from which
a shaft protrudes supported by bearings and has a
sprocket on to which a chain of required pitch and
length is mounted. The weight is mounted on one
side of the chain and this is suspended over the
sprocket and lifted by mechanical means to a certain
height. The sprocket is given an initial torque and
due to self- weight and gravity the weight falls down
at a controlled decent rate.
III Types Of Energy Used
Energy comes in two forms: potential and kinetic.
Potential Energy is type of stored energy. It can be
chemical, nuclear, gravitational, or mechanical.
Kinetic Energy is found in movement. Even the
tiniest things have kinetic energy, like atoms
vibrating when they are hot or when they transmit
sound waves. REnewable gravitational Energy is
used in this setup.
3.1 Renewable Energy:
Renewable energy is natural energy which does
not have a limited supply. It can be uesd again and
again, and will never be run out.
Renewable energy is the energy which comes from
natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides,
geothermal heat and gravity. Which are renewable
(natural replenished). Renewableis an alternative to
fossile fuels and nuclear power and was commonly
called alternative energy. This energy is easily
abundant and environmental pollution free. In future,
the world will entirely depemds on the renewable
energy. Renewable energy replaces conventional
fuels in four distinct areas:
Power generation, hot water heating, transport fuels
and rural (off grid) energy services.
3.2 Gravitational Energy:
Gravitational energy is the energy where an
object possesses downward movement because of its
weight in a gravitational field. The most common

use of gravitational potential energy is for an object
near the surface of the earth where the gravitational
acceleration can be assumed to be constant at about
9.8 m/s. Since the zero of gravitational potential
energy can be chosen at any point( like the choice of
zero of a coordinate system), the potential energy at
a height h above that point is equal to the work
which would be required to lift the object to that
height with no net change in kinetic energy. Since
the force required to lift it equal to its weight, it
follows that the gravitational potential energy is
equal to its weight times the height to which it is
lifted.
IV : METHODOLOGY
The gravity lamp consists of an LED bulb which is
fixed to an adjustable lamp that can be hung from a
ceiling.

4.1 Pulley
Pulleys are utilized as a part of an assortment of
approaches to lift loads, apply compels, and to
transmit control. In nautical settings, the get together
of wheel, hub, and supporting shell is alluded to as a
“piece”. A pulley may likewise be known as a
sheave or drum and may have a depression between
two ribs around its outlines. A wooden pulley of
16.5 cm perimeter is utilized to transmit control. It
has a high co-effective of grinding.
4.2 Supporting Frame:
It is a non-attractive material to bolster the generator
and the electric circuit get together. At the focal
point of the supporting edge pendulum is connected.

Magnets are settled on both side of the edge. The Sr. Components Specifications

Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) uses
permanent magnet embedded in the steel rotor to
create a constant magnet field. The stator winding
connected to AC supply to produce a rotating
magnetic field.
Microwave oven motor is a synchronous motor, may
be use as free energy generator.
Rating:
A C: 21V, 50/60HZ, 4/5RPM, 3.5/4W, CLASS ‘B’
4.6 Working:
The whole assembly is setup on metal frame as
shown in model above. The bicycle wheel is coupled
with generator shaft by means of belt drive. The gear
train is placed on central shaft of bicycle wheel.
Bicycle chain is mounted on the smallest gear of
gear train. On which at one end main weight is
attached which is responsible for electricity
generation and on other end of chain counter weight
is attached so that main weight doesn’t fall too
quickly?
As main weight start to fall below, counter weight

turn rotates the bicycle wheel. The motion of bicycle
wheel is then transmitted to shaft of motor which
when rotates with sufficient revolution per minute, IV.CONCLUSION
generates electricity. Gravity light will be able to replace Kerosene Lamp

will provide renewable, sustainable and cheap
alternative to conventional lights. The braking
mechanism causes the weight to drop slowly,
producing about 30 minutes of light, and returning
the bag to its original height “restarts” the light.
