Abstract:
The recent Indian scenario of heavy traffic congestion anytime in the city has made it
practically impossible for the elderly and the differently abled people to drive even short
distances. Therefore an effort should be made to simplify the Indian driving experience by
the above-mentioned people, even in the worst traffic situations. This can be accomplished by
shifting the driving exercise towards more automatic minimizing driver dependence;
definitely with no compromise in comfort, speed, power and driver-dependent control of the
vehicle. The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system basically comprises two
variable diameter pulleys, which are kept at fixed distances and are connected by a belt.
Presently the vehicles are commonly fitted with a manual transmission mechanism, It would
have been greatly beneficial if we could reduce the human-handled components which can be
obtained by use of CVT as transmission system.

Three wheelers are being used in traffic condition continuously and the problem of great
discomfort is present due to road conditions, vibrations from engine and other sources, also
due to manual transmission. The use of electric drive and CVT together can provide comfort
condition to driver as well as passengers by reducing the load of transmission and by
reducing the vibrations. This tends to increase in fuel economy as well. CVT is capable of
changing gear ratio every fraction of second and providing a smooth driving experience. The
proper combination of CVT with other system is capable to bring a reformatory change in
market of three wheelers. the required torque ratio for each vehicle can be obtained by
designing an auxiliary planetary gearbox, selecting the proper belt, designing an output and
idle gear and with no need to change any other components of the vehicle. Use of a CVT
mechanism facilitates the driver to handle the accelerator, brake pedals and the steering wheel
only, thus enabling one to concentrate more toward the traffic. It supports in reducing exhaust
transmission, thereby enhancing the fuel efficiency and finally improving the dynamic
performance of the vehicle.

Introduction:
Cities nowadays are highly terrified with the traffic in which 3 wheelers face a problem of
shifting of gears many of the times as road and traffic conditions are continuously changing.
This project is to solve this problem and make the ride for driver and rider. As CVT is an
ideal transmission system for vehicles which can on the one hand make bigger opportunity
for automakers to improve their potential customers as well as improving the efficiency of
their automobiles, firstly by equipping their current products with CVT instead of MT, and
secondly by designing new products equipped with high efficient CVT; and on the other
hand, CVT is a more environmentally friendly transmission system compared with the other
kinds of transmission systems and it can help reduce air pollution. Furthermore, this paper
reveals that this system can ameliorate even more by improving its mechanism and probably
designing a new generation of it in the future.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a transmission in which the ratio of the
rotational speeds of two shafts, as the input shaft and output shaft of a vehicle or other
machine, can be varied continuously within a given range, providing an infinite number of
possible ratios. A CVT need not be automatic, nor include zero or reverse output. Such
features may be adapted to CVTs in certain specific applications. Other mechanical
transmissions only allow a few different discrete gear ratios to be selected, but the
continuously variable transmission essentially has an infinite number of ratios available
within a finite range, so it enables the relationship between the speed of a vehicle, engine, and
the driven speed of the wheels to be selected within a continuous range. This can provide
better fuel economy than other transmissions by enabling the engine to run at its most
efficient speeds within a narrow range CVTs are only being used in a fewer no. of vehicles
but the applications & pros of CVT could only be improved based on R&D. As automobile
manufacturers continue to develop CVTs, more and more vehicles will use them, and also
performance and fuel efficiency will continue to increase inevitably.
