I
f you’re reading this in the UK
(and in Western Europe), then the
chances are that summer is most
definitely over. Catching up with our
contributors in southern Europe on
Facebook, it’s clear that the summer
of 2017 has been a scorcher and
modelling time has been necessarily
short. For those of us in the UK in
August we didn’t have that problem, but personally I
always find the summer, with school holidays and the
like, a challenge when it comes to making time for the
hobby. Anyway, with autumn in the air, it’s time to plan
new projects and some serious time at the bench as the
evenings draw in. Autumn is also the time for modelling
shows and I’m really excited this year to be attending
the Scale Model Challenge show in the Netherlands
in October and, of course, our own London Plastic
Modellers Show in London in December. We have a
new venue for the LPMS show this year and we have
lots more exciting things planned for the show which
we’ll announce over the coming months.
This month’s MMI really is a packed issue. It’s
a pleasure to welcome back two of our stalwart
contributors – Ken Abrams and Anthony Guarderas
– who continue the ‘Marine Corps Metal’ theme of
our March issue this year. Ken presents a conversion
based on Dragon’s M2 halftrack, while Anthony
goes for some Heavy Metal again with the M51VTR.
Alexander Pedan builds a Special Operations Ground
Mobility Vehicle, based on Academy’s venerable
Humvee and the Legend Productions’ conversion.
The modern softskin theme continues with Štefan
Pásztor and a Libyan gun truck using Meng Model’s
Pickup with ZU-23-2. Scratchbuilding is often called
the lost art of modelling, something made redundant
by today’s vast range of high-quality plastic kits.
Marian Bunc gives the lie to that with his build of an
improvised armoured car used by Kurdish forces in
the recent battles against ISIS. First-rate modelling skills
are also on display in the work of our new contributor
Volkan Ayhan who converts Academy’s K9 self-
propelled howitzer to a Turkish T155 Firtina. Our
final build this month is from MMI regular Roman
Volchenkov who builds Dragon’s late-war Panther
Ausf. G with some eye-catching and controversial
markings. Finally, this month’s Armour in Profile:
Stefan Degraef presents a photoessay on Spain’s
Leopard 2E, complemented by some of Mark Rolfe’s
superb colour profiles. Until next month, happy
modelling.

Assembling the Puzzle …

Turret Walls
The main difference between
the K9 and T155 turrets is the
height, this being dictated by
the angle of the front panel.
Working out the correct shape
and dimensions took a long
time using old-school geometry

important consideration would
be the thickness of styrene
