PRELIMINARY REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK FOR THE WORK OF MMRDA:

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION OF FLYOVER AT ANDHERI-GHATKOPAR LINK ROAD

P8

Discussion and Suggestions

The subsurface profile was revealed with the help of investigation at each location. From the
study of field and laboratory tests on selected samples the detailed stratification as well as
foundation recommendation is discussed separately for each pier location in the following
sections
Basis of Safe Bearing Capacity and Pile Load Carrying Capacity
Pile Load Carrying Capacity
Normal Bored Cast in- situ Pile Foundations:
The axial load carrying capacity of pile is determined as per IRC- 78: 2014 Appendix-5.
The safe load carrying capacities of piles have been worked out both in weathered rock and
soft/hard rock on the basis of IRC-78:2014 as per provision/assumptions provided therein. The
minimum factor of safety on ultimate axial capacity should be as per clause 709.3.2 of IRC
78:2014.
Basis for the design
The pile shall be concreted with M40 grade of concrete. Therefore, in Method 2 of IRC standard
the Cus and Cub shall be modified with factor √(fck/35) , i.e. 1.06.

N value Shear Strength Shear Strength

/ Cohesion for / Cohesion for
M35 grade M40 grade
concrete concrete
Cub and Cus Cub and Cus
60 – 100 0.4 – 0.7 0.424 – 0.742
100 – 200 0.7 – 1.9 0.742 – 2.014
200 – 300 1.9 – 3.3 2.014 – 3.30

The final design/construction of foundations, the safe /allowable load carrying capacity of these
piles should be taken by conducting actual initial load test on the pile casted in the respective
area.
Further the piles should have necessary structural strength to transmit/sustain the design load.

1.1 Borehole P-8

Based on the revise borehole log at the pier center and Laboratory test results the stratigraphy
in the concerned borehole area can be revealed as –
Stratum 1: Filled up material

The top layer observed at this location is identified as “Filled up material” upto a depth of 3.00m
below the existing ground level.
Stratum 2: Greyish black to yellowish marine clay
The “Filled up Material” is followed by greyish black to yellowish marine clay upto a depth of
5.00m below the existing ground level.
Stratum 3: Highly weathered brownish grey Basalt
The layer of “Marine Clay” is followed by the highly to moderately weathered brownish grey
Basalt upto a depth of 18.0m below the existing ground level. The Core Recovery is varying from
nil to 47% and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is varying from 0% to 9%.
Stratum 4: Moderately weathered to fresh Basalt
The layer of “Highly Weathered Basalt” is followed by slightly weathered to fresh grey Basalt rock
up to a full depth of the borehole 24.00m. The Core Recovery is 98% and Rock Quality
Designation (RQD) is 83%.

The Ground Water table was observed at 2.80m below existing Ground level and may rise during
heavy monsoons.

It can be interpreted from the inspection of bore logs, core boxes and laboratory test results that
the highly decomposed weathered rock level is starting at 5.00 m below the existing ground level.
It is advisable to consider the start of socket from 12.00 m below the EGL.
The capacities of the pile for various socket length is worked out using Method 2 of IRC as
follows:-
Location Pile Diameter Start of Socket Length of Pile Safe Axial Pile
Length m BEGL (m) Capacity (Ton)
P-8 1200 12.00 18.00 531
P-8 1200 12.00 19.20 587

It is recommended to rest the pile at 18.00 m (minimum) below the existing ground level.
The calculation details are attached as Annexure III.
It is recommended to consider the safe axial capacity of the pile as 500 tons.
