Intake session Guidelines

Below is an example of how an intake session may run. Consider what you would like to cover during
your intake session and any prompts that you may wish to use to assist you.

Welcome and hello!

Introduce how the session will be run today:

Run through any documents that you sent through and have been completed (and returned)

Do you have these to hand?

Do you have a pen and paper to hand?

Have you minimised distractions for the next (enter agreed time duration)?

What experience do you have of coaching to date? (If not already gained this information)

I’m going to reiterate what coaching is and isn’t.

Talk about goals – why we set them and the form they should take

And we are going to start to talk about you and your goals

This will take roughly an hour

What is coaching? (consider the key points that you wish to inform the client of)

Coaching is about you – the coachee/client

Helping you to reach your goals and aspirations through a supportive process of questions to help you
arrive quicker than perhaps you may on your own

Important to mention that there are no right or wrong answers

But also about you taking responsibility for the agreed actions

What it is not...

Not about me making any judgements on our conversations

Not about me giving you any advice or suggestions during the sessions

We do not delve into the past or deal with psychological issues or serious addictions

We don’t break confidentiality, except during those circumstances outlined within the Code of Ethics
(sent through to you previously).
Coaching is a productive effective way to move things forward – be forward thinking

What questions do you have regarding this?

So to run through the documents:

Do you have any questions regarding the terms and conditions/contracts?

Do you have any questions regarding the Code of Ethics?

Look individually at any activities previously presented to the client (questionnaire, wheel of life, values
etc)

What are your top 10 values?

Consider any values that need exploring further – ie what does security mean to you?

Where do you feel you are in relation to having these important values met?

How challenging would you like me to be as your coach?

GOALS

We are going to talk about your goals and aspirations that you would like to aim for in the long, medium
and short term.

I will be asking you to write your goals down, make notes during the session and to write down any
agreed actions.

The key difference between the wish and the achievement is in the goal and it being written down and
having a date attached to it.

High achieving people tend to be goal orientated people and I want to help you achieve.

What are we looking for when phrasing a goal:

We want it to be present/future focussed.

We want it to be specific and manageable.

We want it to be positive – lose/give up/stop

We want it to have a date attached to it

I will continue to guide you during your sessions towards these goal setting tips.

So you have mentioned previously that you would like to achieve…………

What would you like to use your coaching programme for? (if not already established)

Questions to support wheel of life development

What are some of the current priorities in your life at the moment?

If everything in that area of your life was perfect – what would be happening? Be detailed what would
this look like? What would you be saying to yourself? What would others be saying to you?

How satisfied are you with your current level?

Coach to feedback on particular strengths.

What would you like your long term goal to be?

How will you feel when you have achieved this long term goal?

What can you do to remind yourself of this feeling to maintain your motivation throughout out time
together and beyond?

What are your expectations from the coaching sessions?

What are your expectations from me?

How will you know that the coaching has been successful for you?

So as we are coming to a close what I’d like to do is remind you that we are all human, life is still
happening whilst you are on your journey to success and that learning and change can take time.

Coach to consider how to inform about how the next sessions will run and expectations around
preparation for this next session.

Not down any actions that the client will be taking between now and then.

When would you like the next conversation to take place?
