1.3 Material

Sub base Type 1 will be soil – having minimum soaked CBR value of 30% when carried
out in accordance with the requirement of 401.2 and maximum Plasticity Index (PI) of
12% under table 1708.2 Special Specification and the for embankment as per the
specification LL<50 and PI<25.

2.0 Construction Procedures

Work will be carried out one side of the road in order to minimize the traffic
disturbances.

Minimum width of the trench will be 350mm so that rammers can be used to achieve the
required compaction.
Care will be exercised to ensure the stability of the road platform adjacent to the section
excavated and that the existing platform is not loosened beyond what is practically
required. All excavation limits will be shown on the drawings or directed by the
Engineer.

Embankment will be excavated step by step.

2.1 Excavation

a) Wooden pegs or steel off cuts will be used to set out the carriageway limits,

b) The inner limits to be excavated will be marked along the existing pavement.

c) Existing sub grade will be excavated by backhoe loader or manually as depending

on dimension of trench.

d) After excavating to the designed depth if there is any unsuitable foundation, further
excavation will be done according to the Engineer’s instruction after his inspection.

e) The exposed surface will be compacted to a not less than 95% of the MDD as
determined by the Modified compaction test.

f) Joint measurements for trench excavation will be taken before commencing the
filling operation. These measurements will be taken to confirm the minimum
dimensions have been met and Engineer will audit the contractor’s works.

2.2 Backfill with Sub Base Material/Embankment material for embankment work.

The compacted exposed surface will be maintained in damp condition so that filled
material will be able to bond with the foundation .But no free surface water should be
permitted.
Then the trench will be filled with approved sub base material in layers not to exceeding
maximum thickness that can be achieved the required density of it with a compacting
equipment used. A compaction thick will be carried out to determine sub base thickness
layer thickness and compaction plant used.

Compaction trials will be carried out to determine the maximum layer thickness and
compactive effort required for sub base with proposed compaction plant, such as
Rammers, 01 tone Vibrating Rollers

The maximum length of the test panel will be 100m.

The filling of sub base material will be done to the height of existing pavement surface.
Then filling thickness of sub base as instructed will be adjusted when overlaying of ABC
work.

3.0 Measurement and Payment

a) Trench excavation will be measured in cum and claimed under BOQ item 3.1
b) The bottom compaction of the trench will be measured in m2
c) Filling will be measured in m3 as per specification 301.4

4.0 Safety Precautions

Apart from the other necessary traffic controlling, safety two flagmen are positioned at
the two ends of the working section having not more than 100 m. precautions such as
placing road sign boards and safety helmets will be provided. In addition the Safety
Officer will be at the site to guide the safety activities.

Opened trenches will be illuminated during the night with signs.

Also all sites personal, Supervisors, Operators, and Labourers will be acknowledged to
identify the limits, utilities (if available) and any other objects to be remained safety with
the operation.

2.0 Construction requirement

The top soil will be removed to a depth of 150mm

The surface over the full width of the sub base foundation will be trimmed and leveled
before compaction using vibrating roller.

The compacted surface exposed by operation Sub base be compacted to not less than 95%
of MDD for standard compaction.

2.1 General

Generally, the road Sub base will be constructed to the correct line and before placing
ABC.

The Sub base material will be compacted at or near (2%) the optimum moisture
content. This will be ensured by testing its moisture content of material which is
intended to be used in the day before using them.

2.2 Placing and Compacting of Sub base Material

Existing Sub base will be trimmed and scarified using a backhoe loader or a motor
grader depending on the condition of ground and available working width.

Then Existing Sub base will be wet to damp condition.

The thickness of Sub base layer will generally depend on the height of the new
pavement above the existing surface level. The minimum lose thickness of fill layer
will be considered as 225mm.

Layer spreading will be done using a motor grader/backhoe loader.

Where the Sub base is built up of more than one layer, the layers to follow will be placed only
after the degree of compaction of the previous layer has been tested and found satisfactory to
density not less than 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by the Procter compaction
test done by BS 1377-75 or AASHTO T 180.

The final level of the sub base shall be the approved drawings.
3.0 Quality Control Test for Sub base

 As mentioned in QAS Sub base material will be maintained its Quality Assurance as
follows.

test frequency

Sieve Analysis As required

Plastic Limit At least once for each source and then one
test for 300m3

Standard/Modified Compaction At least once for each source thereafter Test

for 300m3

CBR At least once for each source thereafter Test

for 300m3

 As mentioned in QAS Sub base Work will be maintained its Quality Assurance as follows.

Test Frequency

Layer Thickness Regularly as required.

Field Moisture Content One test for 250m2

Degree of Compaction of compacted layer One test for 500m2

 During the stages of Sub base construction care will be taken to maintained efficient
drainage of surface water from the entire road surface, to consent of the Engineer.

 Where porous material is specified such material will be placed and compacted in
trenches cut in the completed Sub base.
 The completed road Sub base will be confirms to the levels, slope and cross sections shown
in the drawings .Also water from the road is to be drained over the Sub base freely.

4.0 Measurement and Payment

Soil sub base will be measured by using cross sections under the BOQ 5.1 and BOQ 5.2.
Pay item is 401.5 as per the specification in m3.

5.0 Safety Precautions

Apart from the other necessary traffic controlling, safety two flagmen are positioned at the
two ends of the working section having not more than 100 m. precautions such as placing
road sign boards and safety helmets will be provided. In addition the Safety Officer will be
at the site to guide the safety activities.

All sites personal, Supervisors, Operators, and Labourers will be acknowledged to identify
the limits, utilities (if available) and any other objects to be remained safety with the
operation.

6.0 Quality Assurance work

All material used for Sub base construction and construction works shall confirm to the
specification and drawings.

above the existing surface level. The minimum compacted thickness of fill layer will be
considered as 200mm.

The compacted shoulder will be trimmed to the finish level using a motor grader.

Shoulder material will be constructed wider than required and the outer batter will be
trimmed to the required line and grade.

Where the shoulder is built up of more than one layer, the layers to follow will be placed
only after the degree of compaction of the previous layer has been tested and found
satisfactory to density not less than 100% of the maximum dry density as determined by
