Question# 01: (CLO-3, PLO-2, C-3) [10]
A Two-Stage Air compressor, the pressures are at:
Pressure Value Units
𝑙𝑏𝑓
Atmosphere 14.8 𝑖𝑛2
𝑙𝑏𝑓
Intercooler 111
𝑖𝑛2
𝑙𝑏𝑓
Delivery 832.5
𝑖𝑛2
Table 1- Pressure of air at different stages in air compressor

Assuming perfect and complete intercooling to the original temperature of 15℃ , if the law for
𝑙𝑏 𝑓𝑡
compression is 𝑝𝑣 1.25 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡 and value for gas constant, R = 53.3 𝑙𝑏 𝑓 .𝑅 and 1 𝑙𝑏𝑚 of air is
𝑚
present.
Determine the following:
i. The work required in the low-pressure air compressor stage; [6]
ii. The volume swept in the high-pressure air compressor stage. [4]

Question# 02: (CLO-2, PLO-1, C-2) [20]

a) Explain the concept of minimizing the work required for driving an Air Compressor,
support your answer with possible graphical representations. [4+3]
b) Explain how the pressure in the intercooler circuit is related with the efficiency of
multistage air compressors. [5]
c) Extrapolate the data of pressures at different stages given in Table 1 (Q # 01) and
Conclude that whether the efficiency of the air compressor will be maximum, minimum
or any other quantity. [8]
