MY WORLD OF
ART

To me, art means freedom: A form of

freedom that I am willing to express. In
my art, I like to put information that just
pops out from my head. I don't
specifically plan out my piece before
there is a clear image that creates in my
brain. These abrupt ideas capture my
mind because they are the expression
derived from my own will. This can be any
kind of formation including physical
drawing, filming, photo-shopping, photo-
shooting, acting, singing, writing, dancing,
imagining, and etc. I personally prefer
creating digital art like film and
photography, but I admit that art is
infinite.
I really liked to imagine since I was
young. These imagination can be a story
twist from an old Disney movie or it could
be me riding a zebra as I walk down the
crosswalk. In fact, now those imagination
can be carried out into reality as the
technology advance. The expression of
freedom is becoming range-less and I
think digital art structured in various
form in the internet like Youtube and
Facebook. I personally think these action
positively since many people's world is
being known and acknowledged by
numerous people. To conclude, I really
love the fact that "art itself" contains so
much freedom and imagination and I am
willing to fall into it.

FIRST ANIMATION

I had the chance to create my own animation for the first time in my senior
year. My Environmental Science teacher, Ms. Lee, assigned the class to
create any form of project that alarms the society about environmental
issues. My partner, Chaerin, and I decided to create an animation, despite
the hard work.

STEP 1:

We decided to introduce 'light pollution' to our class. In order to tell the storyline
effectively, I thought showing the showing the negative effects from animals were
important. We have the question "Why do cicadas cry?" as the essential question.
Of course this followed a ten page worth of research and narrative script writing.

STEP 2:

I was the one who was totally responsible with creating the animation. Since I did
not really know how to create professional animation work, I decided to draw
characters in iPad and then later key frame it through Final Cut Pro.

STEP 3:

This section was indeed the most hard and the longest part of this project, which
I seriously struggled. After the image was complete, I needed to keyframe all the
images along with the narrated voice and script and sound effects. Doing this
alone was indeed hard, but the result was worth the work.

COLOR GRADING

This project is the first film work The project is a parody video from the
that I used the Color Grading Korean drama "Signal". Our group
technique. For me, this project lead create a parody video that tells people
me to the interest of different noir to stop use abusive language.

STEP 1:
Script
The first thing our team
did was script writing. We
numerously watched the
parody video to create
lines that will best match
the film's flow. After we
created the scirpt, we
immediately start to act
out the line.

STEP 2:
DRAMA SCENE:
Unfortunately,  I no longer
have the timeline of the
video I edited, but what I
want to most emphasize in
this project is the color
grading style. The original
drama story shows the gap
of different timeline. So the
parody scenes show distinct
color contrast where the
past is warm, retro, yellow,
while the modern day is cold
and mono tone. I think I
melted down this point the
best in the video.

RESULT:

Color grading was indeed one of the most important portion in this project,
but there are also a lot of details in this project. For example, sound
effects, background music, sound difference in walkie-talkie conversation,
glitch in between that shows there is not much time, and etc. All of these
small details becomes a one whole film is which I learned from this project.

ATMOSPHERE
Lee Sang (1910~1937)

The film's atmosphere determines

many part of the film. I personally think
there are a lot of detailed parts that can
create the atmosphere of the film and
two of them, which I think, is color
grading and background music. I think
this two factor change the atmosphere
totally different. The brochure and
video project I created about the
famous Korean poet "Lee Sang"
represent this. Lee Sang is a peculiar
poet. Nobody knows what exactly he is
meaning in his writings, but one fact is
that Lee Sang's poems are mysterious,
dark, creep, and hard to understand. I
wanted to represent his world as a
video.

BROCHURE:

This brochure was part of the project which advertises a fake Lee Sang's exhibition. The
dark and creepy atmosphere is distinct by just watching the brochure, which I intended.

LEE SANG'S WORLD VIDEO:

Although the video is mostly in Korean, I wanted to create a creepy and eery
atmosphere where anyone can feel. To create this I used sound effects and black and
white contrast to make people realize they are looking at something wrong. Since Lee
Sang was a poet, I included typewriting effect and also, the words within  the video is
hard to understand. Every word is not relevant to each other and it is some what
creepy since nobody knows what the words are meaning (not even myself). This is
how I wanted to express Lee Sang's poems and I wish it was affectively delivered to
the audience.

PHOTOSHOP:

POSTER
During my junior year, my Korean History
teacher assigned the class to create a movie
but without including the film. She asked a
group of four to plan and create every factor
a movie should have (but not the film). For
example, the movie should include a
historical background of Korean modern
history, a short script of a specific scene,
summary, main characters, actor cast,
reasons for making the movie, sponsor
company, background music choice, and a
digital copy of a movie poster.

Of course,  this is  all about making an
imaginary movie and my group tried their
best to make it seem real. Our group
completed this project very cooperatively,
but creating the movie poster was a task
where one person needed to be absolutely
responsible with. I happily volunteered to
do this task not only because I liked to
create digital form of art, but also it was
chance for me to experience the Adobe
Photoshop software.

The first hardship I experienced from creating
this project was the title. Our group already
chose the title to be "Dolseoka", which is the
main character's name, and this was not the
problem. The problem was that there was not
any single font that suited the poster's style.
There were several reasons for this: First, real
movie poster don't use fonts that are in
document and second, since the movie is in
Korea's late 1800s, the formal style of font can't
express the traditional feel of that era. Also,
most Korean movie that deals with traditional
background ask professional calligrapher to
create the movie poster title.

i tried my best to find a traditional Korean font
that will suit the movie poster and I even tried
to apply one of them to the project, but my
guts didn't allow it. To solve this, I chose to
create the title myself. I found a free sample of
brush calligraphy that are shown below and
numerously screenshot and photoshop to
pair a nice match that I was satisfied with. In
conclusion, I was able to minimize my title
candidates into two and decided to choose
the left one. 

USING PHOTOSHOP:
There were quite a lot of detail I created
through photoshop, but I want to deal with
the person on the middle. The woman
below is Korean actor 'Shin Sekyung', which
our group decided to cast as one of the
main character. She is cast to be the
spouse who lost her husband through war.
To create the sad atmosphere, I edited one
of her 'Hanbok' pictorial and put it on the
center.

The photo on the left is the original
pictorial and the photo on the right is the
finalized version. To blend down the sharp
surface of the edit, I used many different
photoshop tools. Since I had to learn these
skills on my own, I relied many resources
from Youtube.

BEHIND THE SCENES

These are some pieces that I failed to put in the finalized version of the poster. Some of
them were too awkward or low quality to be part of a movie poster. The two posters in
front were likely to be the complete version, but through several trials of modification, I
completed a poster that I was satisfied with.

As shown above, the poster is the finalized version I edited. I tried my best to express the
sad and dark atmosphere of the war situation that deals in this movie. Through this project,
I learned how to function some tools in Adobe Photoshop software. Although I'm a
beginner, I realized how much I could be detailed in a single piece. It was quite an
experience.

BOOK COVER
In Junior Korean class, our teacher
creates a yearbook for 11th-grade
students that include all the student's
writing pieces. My Korean teacher Ms.
Aum recruited students that can help
her make the yearbook and I signed
up for it. Unfortunately, I couldn't be
part of the editing team. However,
after a few weeks, she called me
personally to ask if I can create the
cover for the yearbook. She told me
that there was nobody in her editing
team that could create a nice cover of
the book.  chosen to be published.

I was a little upset because she could
have picked me from the first place, but I
decided to make the front cover because
I still liked to create digital art. I thought
deeply about how to make this cover
delicately and  realized that we mostly
work with writing in Korean literature
class. So I first inserted the traditional
Korean paper design on the background
and put the title in the letterboxes that
are often used in Korean writing. I
created two different front covers and
one back cover. The second cover was

ELEMENTS

These are some elements I used to

create the covers. The Korean
typewriter represents the writing all
students wrote and kid drawing
animals represent how young students
expressed their world into writing. The
letter box is a form that is often used
in Korean writing. Other pictures that
are not in the cover are small parts
that could have been in the cover, but
deleted lately. I personally liked the
cover with the typewriter, but I like
both pieces.

LEISURE TIME ARTWORK

My hobby is creating calligraphy artwork. As I encounter different films, novels, and comics, I
found that there are so many quotes that are so precious, beautiful, meaningful, and also
funny. I really wanted to capture those quotes into beautiful letters and that is how I started
to build up my hobby. I first started as purchasing a cheap fountain pen, but later I then
bought dip pens, expensive inks, water brushes and now I realize this hobby became an
important part of my life where I can't live without it. I first focused more on calligraphy, but
later I expressed by imagination in whatever form, which made the drawing book became a
pool of expression. Some of my calligraphy art works are shown hereunder (Most of the
calligraphy are in my native language: Korean).
