cameras. Your encouragement and constructive comments have helped to develop the idea
to create this book and other tutorial material. A special thanks to those who helped to

About Me
With more than 40 years’ experience in the photographic industry, teaching photography at
a local adult education college and as a technology product specialist and European trainer
with Kodak Limited I have been fortunate to learn many aspects of photography and
photographic science.
I was also privileged to be part of the Eastman Kodak design council, Rochester USA, for one
professional video colour negative analyser product as became European product specialist
for it after launch.
I have been passionate about my own photography for many years striving always to
achieve the highest standards at photographic club level and with my own private images.
I have evolved with this as a hobby, developing my own black and white and transparency
material and then migrating to digital photography as the first of the digital cameras were
commercially available.
I was fortunate to see the first hybrid camera with the Eastman Kodak sensor in a Nikon F3
body, the Kodak DCS100 digital professional camera with a massive 1.3 mega-pixel KAF1300
sensor.
This camera had a CCD back where the traditional film plane would be and a tethering cable
to a display and digital storage unit. How technology has developed since 1991.
Through my YouTube® channel www.youtube.com/user/ghough12 and this guide book I
hope to be to pass on some of this information and hopefully encourage others to take
more rewarding images with their FZ300/330 camera.

The opinions expressed within this booklet are my own and derived through extensive use
with this camera. There may be some areas that may contain references which may
generate some discussion however I hope that these don’t detract from the overall aim of
the book which is to offer sensible reference material for this camera.
All images are from my own library (except where stated otherwise) and used to illustrate
functions or settings etc.

website and feel the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330 will give them that facility.
►Corporate workers who may want to produce higher quality images for inclusion in some
of their company presentations, reports or other applications.
Considering the very different skills levels was a more difficult decision as the Panasonic
Lumix FZ300/330 is such a fantastic camera that it covers a huge spectrum of potential
people who will buy and use it, from absolute beginners who have never owned a digital
camera before to the advanced amateur with years of shooting experience who may be
using the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330 as a backup camera. I decided it was a pretty tough
assignment to provide something for everybody, so I will be trying to cover the needs of
each of the following groups and their skill levels:

►Complete beginners to digital photography: if you have only used the basic of compact
cameras, or have worked only with film based cameras in the past then you are to be
congratulated on the choice of camera you have made. This guide to the Panasonic Lumix
FZ300/330 will help you to understand the controls and features that this camera provides
and help you to progress into digital photography with the minimum of concerns. If you get
keen, then you may find that additional research into some of the topics that I will explore
will help speed this journey.
►Advanced point and shooter who is upgrading: There are many technically well specified
cameras out there in the market place.
Panasonic has an extensive range of models to suit consumer lifestyles. Models like the LX
series and TZ (ZS) series do have many user definable options and settings and it is quite
possible you have a lot of technical expertise with these cameras.
You may have recognised some of the inherent problems associated with this class of
camera like slow autofocus or shutter lag and sometimes the restricted aperture or zoom
range available on them.
The possibility of using more powerful, external flash units, external microphones to record
better sound for your video clips and simple things like the facility to employ filters to
modify the light entering the camera or provide creative effects may be another reason you
have decided to purchase the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330.
►Traditional film users, new to the digital era: You probably know all about photography,
you understand f-stops, shutter speed and ISO which make up the components of the
“exposure triangle”.
You may even have had one of the more sophisticated film cameras which also employ some
pretty slick electronics like autofocus and metering modes.
All you need is the relevant information on using the digital specific features of the
Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330 and how to match, or exceed the capabilities of your previous
film based camera.
►Advanced users: I expect you to be the most discerning readers who have already
extensive working knowledge of digital photography and the associated digital work flow. I
cannot teach you much more about digital photography but hopefully allow you to
experience the joys of shooting digital images with the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330.
You might feel, like I do, that the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330 will provide a tool to capture
great images in a variety of situations without the added hassle of a DSLR and lenses so
providing you with a very quick, lightweight and feature rich tool to do it with.

In the illustration above you can see my recommendations for memory cards suitable for
use with the Panasonic Lumix FZ300/330.
The two cards on the left are the SDHC cards suitable for all photographic stills shooting
plus AVCHD or MP4 video at 1080p.
On the right, you will see two SDXC memory cards with the new U1 and the faster U3
ratings code. The two cards are required for reliable shooting in both 4K photo and video
modes.

In March of 2017 a new classification for the speed rating of memory cards was introduced.
The Video Speed Class will support the highest video resolutions available today including
4K, 8K, 3D and 360-degree video. The new Video Speed Class standard is part of the latest
SD 5.0 protocol, which ensures guaranteed minimum performance levels just as the Speed
Class and UHS Speed Class classifications do for the current crop of SDXC cards.
The fastest options – V60 (60 MB/s) and V90 (90 MB/s), will support 8K resolution (7680 x
4320), while V6, V10 and V30 capture high-definition and 4K resolution and guarantee
minimum sequential write speeds of 6 MB/s, 10 MB/s and 30 MB/s respectively. All speed
classes guarantee minimum video recording speeds to ensure smooth video playback, so
actual recording performance may be even faster.
Because of the advancement in writing speed, (some of the technologies in these devices
are using as low as 0.4 volts), your card reader in your laptop or pc may not be able to read
the files at these new higher rates. Playback of 4K video direct from the card may be “jerky”
and in this case either copy the file to the pc/laptop or purchase one of the newer card
readers which support the later UHS-II classification. Lexar are now offering their high speed
U3 and V60 cards with a USB card reader. The high-speed cards can be identified as having
two rows of contacts on the rear of the plastic carrier. They are backwards compatible with
earlier generations of cards and will work with readers (although not at high read speeds)/
Formatting Memory Cards
Formatting the cards in camera is the best option after they have been used a few times,
and especially if you share them across a range of cameras. This has the advantage of
recovering the file system and structure and thus overcoming some of the fragmentation
which occurs if you delete files either from within the camera or later when the card is in
your pc card reader. This process allows the camera buffer to write to the card faster and
hence allowing it to clear quickly. This is essential when shooting in the burst modes of the
camera.

There has been much written, and debated, about the use of third party batteries in
Panasonic Lumix cameras. Fears of fires and explosions either during the charging phase or
the subsequent use in the camera have been circulating around the camera forums now for
years. It’s obvious to see why third party batteries are so much in demand as they can be as
little as one fifth of the price of an OEM battery.
In my, opinion, I see absolutely no reason why not to use these batteries if you take a few
sensible precautions.
I do recommend using the original DE-A80 charger from Panasonic as it has a few useful
checking features to prevent such accidents occurring during the charging phase. It will only
work with Panasonic OEM batteries and not third party ones.
Let’s examine why batteries catch fire or explode during charging
During the charging process, there are several checks made by the charger to ensure that it
is safe to apply a charging voltage to the lithium ion cell.
During charging the internal resistance of the cell causes heat, created as a by-product of
the charging process, to increase the temperature of the cell. If the temperature continues
to rise, unchecked, the cell can develop thermal runaway with catastrophic results.
The cell has 4 terminals marked +, -, T and D. It’s the + and – terminals that are used during
charging and discharging and the T terminal is the one which notifies the charging device or
discharging device (i.e. the camera) that there is a problem. The usual strategy for dealing
with this is to immediately discontinue charging or discharging.
The Panasonic charger will not charge a third-party battery which does not have the “T”
terminal connected internally to a protection integrated circuit within the cell. It will also
very quickly cease charging if the charging current causes heating of the cell to occur.

The camera has similar protection circuitry to prevent the battery becoming too hot due to
heavy current demands such as those seen during video recording where the camera
internal heat can build up by the processor generating heat also.
If your charger only has two contacts which align with the + and – terminals only, the
charger is relying upon the battery terminal voltage to regulate the charging voltage. It is
with these chargers that potential problems of overcharging can occur.
If you notice that the battery become too hot to hand hold during charging, then it is likely
the charger is not calibrated correctly and you should discontinue using it.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be allowed to completely discharge and if the cell
voltage drops below 2volts the chances are that copper shunts will have formed within the
cell and it may become dangerously hot if recharged.
Many of the travel chargers or those intended for use in vehicles fall into this category and
you should monitor the battery case temperature for signs of overheating. Alternative
chargers are discussed in the accessory chapter.
To add to this, it is always wise not to charge the batteries in a high ambient temperature or
cover the battery during charging. Similarly, lithium ion batteries should not be stored
where the ambient temperature may become excessively hot (50C/120F).
Allow batteries that have been removed from the camera to cool before charging again.
If the DE-A80 charging LED is flashing this indicates that there is a problem with the battery
that is being attempted to be charged. The battery temperature may be too high or too low
or the contacts dirty.

The Panasonic Lumix FZ300/300 has had a re-design to the way in which the battery
compartment door now opens. It now opens towards the front of the camera.

The DMC-FZ300/330 has evolved from the DMC-FZ200 into a camera which equally rivals
some of the entry level DSLR’s in terms of handling and features.
A most welcome feature is the manual focus control via the side wheel on the lens barrel.
Whilst it isn’t as good as manual, mechanically coupled focus it is now much easier to use
and featuring the focus peaking mode makes the setting of critical focus a lot easier to
accomplish.
The EVF has also been updated to a larger sized OLED display offering 1440K dot display.
However, don’t be misled by this method of specifying dots rather than pixels!
A pixel comprises of 3 dots – Red, Green and Blue. Together these generate the 16million
colours that we see in the viewfinder.
It means that actual resolution is only 1/3rd of this value so effectively it is a 480K pixel
display.
As most displays are built on multiples of 640 pixels the actual resolution is probably 800 x
600 pixels.
Similarly, the LCD has been upgraded to a touch panel display having 1040K dots so again
347K pixels or 640 x 540 pixels – just larger than VGA resolution.
The microphone input has now been updated with the “industry standard” 3.5mm stereo
input socket thus we no longer must use adaptors which introduce the possibility of bad
connection and noise onto the audio recordings.
The lens zoom now can be set to drive the lens focal lengths to fixed values which give the
ability to set the lens focal length to a desired value and return to that setting with total
accuracy.

This, fully automatic, mode is recommended for those users new to the camera or simply
want to use the camera in a “point and shoot” mode.
The camera uses “scene” type recognition and automatic exposure determination to expose
the images.
By default, the camera is factory set to the basic iA mode however, the more advanced iA+
mode is available via selection tab found in the REC set up menu. Here you can select either
the iA or the iA+ mode by either using the left/right navigation buttons or the touch screen.
This enhanced mode allows you the user to adjust the exposure (effectively exposure
compensation) and the hue or tint of the image to apply either a warming or cooling tint to
the image.
Begin by rotating the top mode control dial to the iA position, aligning the iA symbol against
the white index on the flash head. When you point the camera at the subject the image
processor will attempt to determine what type of scene that the lens is imaging on the
sensor. It looks for colour and light intensity patterns and facial features to set the optimal
exposure conditions.
You can see the scene type that has been selected by looking at the top left hand side of the
LCD (or EVF if enabled). Initially the icon will be displayed with a blue colour for about two
seconds and then will turn red.
It is advised to check that the scene being captured is correctly interpreted by the camera.
Sometimes the scene recognition software incorrectly determines the scene being imaged.
If this is the case switch to the SCN scene mode and select the most applicable scene type
for the scene being photographed. Scene mode is found on the top mode dial marked SCN.

When shooting in the fully automatic mode (iA or iA+) the camera will select the most
appropriate focus method.
In this mode, face detection is active (as shown in the image below) and eye detection
software attempts to locate and focus on the eye closest to the camera.

This eye detection mode is automatic and focusses on the nearest eye to the camera. This
method cannot be changed.
When in this mode the camera adjusts the exposure to give the best image based upon the
metering from the face.

When you have selected the image that you want to review you can see how the camera
detected the scene type.
In the image above the camera correctly identified that this was a close-up scene and
selected the i-Macro mode and in the next image illustrated, identified the i-Landscape
mode setting optimal parameters for this scene.

A lot of thought has gone into the automatic scene detection algorithms and they are
becoming very reliable in selecting the correct scene type for the image being recorded.
If the subject is being photographed where there is light shining behind the subject, which
would cause the subject to be recorded with a dark appearance, the camera applies
backlight compensation to lighten the recorded image.
The selection of iA or the more advanced iA+ mode is made from the REC set up menu by
touching the icon or the left/right navigation button.
