Leadership Self Assessment

To improve one’s capabilities in leadership requires discovering of personal strengths and

weaknesses. As such, taking a self-assessment test assist someone to discover the deficiencies

and be able to work towards decreasing or eliminating them. The Hill Consulting Group’s

(HCG) leadership skills assessment’s website is an example of tools that can test someone’s

aptitude in leadership. The assessment scores someone on five statements reflecting numerous

attributes and skills of eight leadership components, that is, providing direction, leading

courageously, fostering teamwork, championing change, coaching people, motivating others,

building relationships, and acting with integrity (The Hill Consulting Group, 2014).

Assessment Results

According to HCG’s outcome, I am capable of naturally handling different situation

courageously, providing my teammates way forward with ease, champion for novel amends, act

with integrity and motivate others to work efficiently to achieve desired outcome. However, the

leadership skills I believe I ought to rectify and build up include fostering teamwork, capacity to

build relationships, and coaching others.

Firstly, I need to recognize the significance of team collaboration in order to garner

divere perspectives. According to Prieto (2013), leaders working solely rather than with a team

can achieve very little (p. 209). Therefore, I should prioritize on encouraging team interactions

and collaborations amongst the members so as to utilize the different skill set each member

To garner diverse perspectives, I solicit input from my team members possesses. Also, as the

team leader, I should be in the forefront to celebrate the team’s achievements.

Secondly, to be an effective leader, I need to improve my skills of fostering and building

up successful professional relationships. It is almost certain that there is no organizations that can
work as a standalone, that is, function without outside assistance. Therefore, as a leader, I must

possess the capacity to nurture healthy working relationships within and outside the organization.

As a result, networking and nurturing of such relationships enables the team to easily access

resources and services crucial in accomplishing the organization’s objectives (Leadership Skills,

2010).

Lastly, sometimes followers can lead and leaders follow because leadership involves

influence at every level (Three Circles of Effective Leadership, 2016). As such, being the leader,

I need to develop leaders in each level of my organization by supporting and encouraging team

members to explore their leadership potentials. I plan to provide my staff with developmental

coaching and encourage them to advance their education. In the end, coaching them will assist in

tapping into their potential and encourage novel innovations which are crucial in keeping the

organization competitive.
