Defensive Plays
Flag Football Playbook
2005 Edition

“Dr. G’s Playbook” provides plays designed for 8 on 8 flag football. Many of the
routes and plays, however, are convertible to 7 on 7 and/or 4 on 4. In 2005 edi-
tion, we will have information on formations, route trees, offensive plays and
defensive plays.

There are 6 different offensive formations in this guide. Each play page is specific
to a formation and has seven plays. The plays in the left column are normal and
the plays in the right column are “flipped” or inverted. In other words, the receivers,
half backs, slots, etc will be in the same relative location, but on the opposite side.

Defensively, we have focused on two formations. These plays can be found on

page 7.

In the interest of making this a better playbook, we will have a contest each month
for the best 3 plays submitted to Dr. G’s playbook. We are interested 8 on 8 offen-
sive and defensive plays. The top 2 plays submitted each month will be eligible
for a FULL refund of this book! Fax your best plays to 801-459-8098.

Let this serve as a guide to a winning season. Mix and match your own schemes
with our strategies. We hope you find “Dr. G’s Playbook” to be as simple and use-
ful, as many of our customers do. The key to any great season is practice, practice,
practice.

Good luck!

Management
Tips for using this Playbook:
Formations:
On each page, you will have a new formation in the top left block of the page. This formation is there to
help you see understand the positions for each player. We label and color code each player so you can
easily follow their specific assignments.

Following the ball:

In the case of play action or fake hand offs, we have placed a little football in the route to allow you to
follow the ball. A small “F” means fake, ie: handoff or play action. For example:

TEW2W1GG CQBHB
W1 G C G W2

QB

TE HB

Delay routes (block then go):

On offense, we have added a little red blocking sign, which denotes a delay route. For example a center
may briefly block a rushing defense men, then roll out for a pass in the flats:

W1 W2
G C G TE

QB

F
HB
Tips continued...
Route tree:
The Route Tree is the backbone of the offense. Players that take the time to memorize the route tree
will substantially increase the performance of your offense. The route tree is the basis for the hurry up
offense, as well as audible calling from the line. Learn the tree!

When the QB calls the play, he will always name the formation first, then read a series of numbers from
right to left. Each number will correspond with the route assigned for each receiver. The QB will first
name the routes for receivers, then assign any routes for the HB or Line men. For example:

6 8

7
5 4

0 2
3

Odd numbers go towards center of field Even numbers go towards sidelines

1. Quick Slant 0. Button hook, 10 yards then back turn
3. 5 yards, then slant 2. 5 yards, then out
5. 10 yards then slant 4. 12 yards, then out
7. Deep fly 6. 10 yards, then post corner
8. “banana” up the sideline

Disposable Playbook:
This playbook can go with you on the field! You can use transparent plastic sheet protectors to hold the
paper. You can also cut the plays down to business card size and have them laminated. If you lose
them, or they get damaged, simply print them again!

Blocking assignments, (O-line):

We only show assignments when someone is assigned a route. In the case of guards or center, please
assume normal blocking scheme unless you see that they have a specific route or assignment. To
avoid overcrowding the playbook, we don’t indicate their blocking schemes unless they are unique and
need explanation.
