Thousands of people attended the fes-
tivities of Rogers Hometown Hockey in
Strathmore Dec. 21-22.
The weekend began with the Downtown

rytelling really appealed to me … It’s all
about people,” said Slone. “When it comes
down to it and what separates us from oth-
er hockey broadcasts is we’re telling sto-
ries. We’re telling stories of the people in
the game, behind the game, volunteers and
parents, and what it means to communities
across Canada.”
Slone spent three full days in the commu-
nity listening to stories and doing meet and
greets before sharing Strathmore’s hockey
story on national television.
Some feature events of the weekend in-
cluded the downtown kickoff party with a
hockey skills demonstration, s’mores com-
petition, free pancake breakfast and free
hamburger lunch. A Paint the Town Red
competition, hosted by the Strathmore and
District Chamber of Commerce, was won
by Strathmore Pawn Collectables.
Rogers Hometown Hockey Festival at
the Strathmore Family Centre included live
music, autograph signing sessions, games,
shows, live book readings, trivia, an inter-
mission chat, a parade of champions featur-
ing local hockey teams, a pre-game show
hosted by MacLean and Slone and a live
showing of the NHL game on Dec. 22.
The Town of Strathmore also hosted a
charity hockey game on Dec. 21 featuring
local emergency services playing against
local minor hockey and ringette teams to
raise cash and food donations for JumpStart
and the Wheatland County Food Bank.

Town gets boost from Hometown Hockey

According to Ty Tomasta, communi-
cations ambassador with the Town of
Strathmore, $50,000 was contributed
from the town from the Financial Stabi-
lization Fund to fund the logistical side
of the event including both day and
overnight security, RCMP escorts and
equipment rentals. The estimated eco-
nomic development implications for lo-
cal businesses and the town is upwards
of $1 million.
Tomasta also accounts for a positive
community impact, including exposure
to Strathmore throughout the Home-
town Hockey broadcast to a nation-
wide audience, community promotion
through mainstream media, including
Rogers and Sportsnet, fundraising op-
portunities for local hockey teams and
Strathmore Minor Hockey, paid op-
portunities for locals, and the support
raised from the charity hockey game
which included over $1,000 sold in
50/50 tickets plus food donations.
The Calgary Flames beat the Dallas
Stars 5-1, with attendees at the live out-
door viewing party cheering as both
the Flames and the Town of Strathmore
won.
“I think that hockey in this country
is something that brings us together
and hockey rinks are not just a place
to watch a game but they are a place
that communities tend to gather,” said
Slone.
“Hometown pride is definitely a uni-
versal. I think that’s why we end up
having so many great guests. It doesn’t’
matter if you’re a super star, a Zambo-
ni driver or a school teacher, you are
proud of where you’ve come from, so
that’s really fun when you get to hear
people that you look up to talking
about that (on this show). And people
just love to come out and support their
community.”

Just over a year after filming wrapped
in Siksika Nation for CBC’S award-
winning original series, Still Standing,
Season 5 Episode 13 aired on Dec. 10
featuring stories, comedy and footage
taped in in the community.
The show features Canadian come-
dian Jonny Harris who visits small
towns across the country searching for
survival stories filled with community
resilience. He spends some time talk-
ing with and getting to know the lo-
cals and their stories, learning about
the communities before performing
a free comedy show celebrating the
towns he visits.
Harris visited Siksika Nation in No-
vember 2018 after becoming fascinat-

of the locals, visiting with the 2019 Cal-
gary Stampede First Nation’s Princess
Astokomii Smith and standing under
a bridge over the Bow River with Al-
layna Many Guns as he learned about
how high the flood waters reached. He
hung out with the Old Sun Indian Re-
lay Team to learn about the sport and
how buffalo was traditionally hunted.

Trevor Soloway who made his first
documentary, Siksika Strong, about
the flood, and he visited the Blackfoot
Crossing Historical Park which he de-
scribed as “architecturally one of the
most beautiful in the country.”
Harris delivered a rousing original
stand-up comedy routine, a toast for
the whole community, at the Siksika
Nation High School Theatre on Nov.
26, 2018.
“The live taping was fantastic; the
crowd was amazing,” said Harris who
has visited several Indigenous com-
munities across the country for the
series.
He acknowledged that many Indige-
nous communities have faced heavier
historical hardships than a simple sto-
ry of a key industry being shut down,
and they don’t make it their mission to
make an episode of Still Standing into
a truth and reconciliation seminar. But
he said they acknowledge “that these
towns have had a long, difficult and
oftentimes unfair history … once we
do that – acknowledge it – we can fo-

and inspiring stories,” Harris added.
“It was great to see what is happen-
ing now with the Old Sun Community
College which used to be a residential
school and is now essentially support-

more impressed with the sense of re-
siliency.

about finishing the race even when
you get knocked down, Harris noted

and that the stories he heard and the
things he learned is why he does it
and that it “says it all right there.”

Hospice receives donation

from Wawanesa, Hillcrest
The Wheatland & Area Hospice Society accepted a couple of
large donations from Wawanesa Insurance and Hillcrest In-
surance on Dec. 20. Wawanesa donated $16,500 to the soci-
ety from their Capital for Communities Program and Hillcrest
topped up their donation by $3,500 to round it up to an even
$20,000. To date, the hospice society has collected $1.1 mil-
lion out of their $3 million end goal to build a hospice in the
area along with currently providing end-of-life programs and

The Strathmore Storm M15 midget team fell 5-3 to Medicine Hat on Dec. 20 at the Strathmore
Family Centre. However, the Storm regrouped and defeated the second place Indus Hurricanes
3-2 on Dec. 22 in Indus. The team will return to action Jan. 4 in Okotoks before hosting Chester-
mere on Jan. 10 (7:15 p.m.).

The Wheatland Chiefs were defeated 5-1 on home ice in their last game of 2019 against the
CNHA Canucks on Dec. 20 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Despite the loss, the local double-A

Anita (Lafontaine)
Anita passed away peacefully at the
Strathmore Hospital Friday, December
27th, 2019 at the age of 88 years.
She was born March 24th, 1931 to George and Lillian
(Duffy) Lafontaine, the eldest of five children. After
college Anita worked as a librarian at NRC (National
Research Center) at the Library of Parliament on Par-
liament Hill in Ottawa until she met the love of her
life Ted Bazant and the love story began. They were
married, after a romantic long distance courtship on
July 31, 1954. They had three daughters, Maureen,
Kathleen and Irene. Ted and Anita raised their chil-
dren on the family farm northwest of Strathmore, they
remained there until shortly before Ted’s passing.
Anita loved the finer things in life such as her china
and crystal collection, jewelery, and enjoyed sewing,
gardening and reading. Her greatest joys in life were
her children and grandchildren. She will be remem-
bered as the best gentle, gracious, loving wife, Moth-
er and Nanny anyone could ask for.
Anita is predeceased by her husband Ted Bazant,
daughter Irene Healy, sister Adele Kline, and sister
Lillian Berlinguette. She is survived by her daughter
Maureen Bazant­-LeRiviere and her children, Matthew
Gosling (Marissa) Theo, Bryn, Wyatt, and Jocelynne
Palin (Brett) and Ethan Gosling (Melissa) Peyton,
Noah. Daughter Kathleen Guichon (Gary) and their
children Karly, Chancey and Chanel and son-in-law
Tim Healy, Tim and Irene’s daughters Danielle Wal-
lace (Stan) and their child Sloan and Ashton Ashley
(Ben). Also survived by Anita’s brother Robert Lafon-
taine {Lynda) and sister Irene Moodie (Wayne) and
numerous extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at Mcinnes & Hal-
loway (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive N.E. Calgary,
AB) on Friday, January 10th, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. Con-
dolences, memories and photos may be shared and

Leo
Leo Jules Gauthier was born to
Albert and Julia Gauthier in Cluny,
Alberta on January 2, 1925. He
passed away peacefully with family at his side, on
December 29, 2019 at Strathmore Hospital at the
age of 94 years.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of
over 68 years, Elizabeth Josephine (Betty-Jo)
Gauthier (Elias); six children: Anthony (Sharon),
Don (Brenda), Bill (Maggie), Pat (Barb), Rita (Vern),
Martin (Glenda); 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grand-
children; sister Angel (Ken) as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
Leo was pre-deceased by his parents, five sisters,
Annette, Rosie, Laurette, Lea and Albertine and two
brothers, Lawrence and Aime.
Leo bought grain for United Grain growers in Bar-
ons, Cluny and Hussar. His love of the farm life
lasted his whole life and he always enjoyed seeing
how the crops were doing. He was an avid hockey
fan even before T.V., starting out as a Leafs fan
and switching to the Flames upon their arrival in
Calgary. He was very involved with minor hockey,
coaching teams in Hussar including the Hussar
Hustlers with five of his sons and one nephew play-
ing on the team. In later years he enjoyed watching
his grandchildren and great grandchildren play. He
always had a big grin for the grand kids and great
grand kids.
A prayer vigil will be held on Thursday, January 2,
2020 at Wheatland Funeral Chapel (202 Lakeside
Blvd. Strathmore) at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will
be celebrated on Friday, January 3, 2020 at Hope
Community Covenant Church (245 Brent Blvd.
Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at
Sacred Heart Cemetery, Strathmore.

Coates family moved to the Last Lake area in the Peace River country in 1931. Hazel attended school at Blue Hawk
School in the area. She worked as a nurse’s aid at the Berwyn Hospital and as a Post Mistress in the Brownvale Post
Office.
In 1947 Hazel returned with her Aunt, Emma Kermack, to Strathmore to visit other relatives. This is where she met
her husband, Archie Frederick, and ended up marrying him on December 15th, 1948. Due to their marriage, the
Strathmore Standard published a headline saying “Pioneer Families Unite” since both Hazel and Archie’s parents
were true pioneers who had been in the area long before Alberta became a province. Archie and Hazel raised four
children on their farm near Nightingale.
Hazel was a nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the Matriarch of the family and her
family was her life. She ruled with a strict hand but also was a great inspiration and teacher. She was quick-witted
and funny. She could do math in her mind like a human calculator and loved to read. When there was a rare occasion
to celebrate, she was the life of the party and enjoyed “dancing a jig”, as she put it (a term from her Dad’s Maritimes
roots). All of the kids (boy or girl), as they got old enough, were taught how to cook, shoot a gun, weed a garden,
birth a calf, play crib (as she said that taught great math skills) and the list goes on. One could say both Hazel and
Archie were “gender neutral” when it came to chores – if it needed done, it didn’t matter if you were a boy or a
girl – just get out there and do it! Hazel would often say “The best man for the job is a woman”, and she certainly
proved it herself many times.
Hazel enjoyed gardening and was very proud of her large weed-free gardens. She was generous with the bounty of
her work and often visitors went home with fresh produce, eggs or cream in hand. She was a partner to her husband
in all ways – she assisted with the farming and could expertly operate any piece of machinery on the farm. Archie
teasingly call her “Fritz, the hired man”. Hazel also had a connection with animals and her herd of cows all knew
their names, dutifully coming when she would call out “come, boss”. She “pulled” calves and doctored the animals.
There were chickens, pigs and the odd orphaned lamb that would be taken care of. After Archie passed in 1976, she
continued on for many years, farming and birthing out the cows with some help from family, friends and neighbors.
Finally, around the age of 85, she was talked into retiring. She continued to live on the farm, drive herself, and still
had a garden up to 5 years ago when a broken hip forced her to go live with her daughter. For a small woman (barely
5 feet tall) she had a work ethic and stamina that few could match.
During all the farming years, she usually also held a job in Strathmore cooking or waitressing at one of the restau-
rants. She had retired from cooking when she was 65, but a desperate need from the Toddle Inn Daycare for an
in-house cook had her returning to the work force for another 5 years or so. She developed “gluten free” recipes
for a couple of the children before “gluten free” was a common thing. She was a great and inventive cook and
could make the most amazing cream puffs (with real cream she had separated from her own milking cows), bread,
cinnamon buns, butter tarts, saskatoon pies, canned fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, jellies, relishes, pickles
and many other dishes. Hazel could make a meal out of almost anything. This may have been from being raised in
the north country and making it through both the depression and the war years. She was inventive to say the least!
Hazel is survived by her children; Jude (Don) Morgan; Nolan Frederick; Janet Frederick (Dave); her daughter-in-law
Beverly Nylen; her grandchildren Mike Morgan; Bill (Lisa) Nylen; Jennifer Frederick; Dillon (Sandi) Frederick; David
(Laura) Frederick and Kevin (Jeremy) Nylen; 5 great grandchildren as well as two sisters, Betty Novodvorski and
Carol Persson.
She was predeceased by her husband Archie; her son Bill; daughter-in-law Terryl; her parents Robert and Annie
Coates and 7 brothers and sisters, along with other family members.
As per Hazel’s wishes, (as she said she has outlived most of her friends and older family members) there will be no
funeral services. If so desired, donations in memory of Hazel may be made directly to Wheatland & Area Hospice
