THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Dear Parishioners,

Blessings on this Feast of the Epiphany and

in the year ahead!

Today’s feast, Epiphany, means a making

known or a revelation. It celebrates the
fact that Jesus came to save ALL people,
not only the Jews. God invites everyone,
Jew and Gentile to share the benefits of the
salvation won by Christ. It celebrates that
all men and women are equal in God’s
eyes. In Christ we all become part of the
body of Christ.
St Matthew in his Gospel today (which we
will be reading in the coming year), tells
the story of the Wise Men, Magi, pagan
astrologers, who find the Christ-child. They
adore him and bring him their gifts.
Matthew is writing his Gospel towards the
end of the first century. He is aware that
Judaism has rejected Jesus as the Christ
while pagans (Gentiles) have accepted him.
the story indicates that King Herod and the
Jewish leaders united in their rejection of
Jesus, while the pagan travellers from
faraway lands came to worship the infant
King of the Jews.
The Wise Men follow their ‘Star’. They
make enquires about the Infant King when
they reach Jerusalam. Herod and the
whole city is on the alert! But they do
nothing to find the truth. They have all the
information from the scriptures – but pay
no heed or even try to respond to that
wonderful news.
So we take up the story. We try to
respond in faith. We believe, accept and
adore Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. We
accept his word and try to follow his
example. Jesus came to bring the Good
News to the poor; to bring forgiveness,
compassion and mercy; to feed the hungry;
clothe the naked; welcome the stranger
and all the other invitations he has made.
We continue to worship him and proclaim
his message and tell his story. We do this
in word and action.
We ask God’s blessings in our lives in the
year ahead. We will be hearing about the
‘Year of the Word’ and trying to respond.
We too are travellers just like the Magi.
We too have to continue to ask questions
as they did in order to meet the Infant King
and the Risen Saviour.
YEAR OF THE WORD: The weekend of
18/19th January we will have a significant
gesture to mark the Year of the Word. A
copy of St Matthew’s Gospel will be
available for every family in the parish.
During this Liturgical Year we will be
listening to readings from St Matthew’s
Gospel. We hope to take up afresh the
gospel message as recorded by St
Matthews. There will be other events to
highlight the theme.
May our efforts be exciting, rewarding and
full of hope and consolation in our journey
through 2020.

Year of the Word 2020
We look forward to making every effort to
highlight the Word of God in the year ahead
this has been the invitation by Pope
Francis. We will follow the direction of the
evangelisation in the diocese and do our
best to celebrate God’s word on a daily
basis.

We are currently organising a 5-day
walking pilgrimage from Lisbon to Fatima
for young people for the 3rd-9th April 2020
(during Easter break).

for the Year of the Word on the Bible. The
dates and topics are:
- ‘What do we mean by Bible?’ on 14th

- ‘Who speaks in the Bible? To whom does
he speak?’ on 28th January, 7-8.30pm
- ‘Where does the Bible come from and
when did it take place?’ on 11th February,

CRIB OFFERING 2019
This Christmas our Crib Offering will be
donated to the Catholic Children’s Society
to support their work with disadvantage
children and families.
This will help provide mental health
services, family support and emergency
grants for vulnerable children in our
Diocese.

We all know it is difficult to buy presents
for friends who have everything!!
We plan to hold a sale of Surplus Gifts and
Cake Sales to help us raise fund for the
London Catholic Worker.
The sale will be
on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th January
after all the Masses.
If you have any Surplus Christmas gifts you
would like to donate, please leave them in
the Church or the Parish Office.
Parishioners are also invited to support
the event by bringing in cakes and buying.
