Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen.

I hope this day finds you in the best of

spirits. I thank all of you for inviting me in today’s speech ceremony with the theme:
____________________, I’m Mayor Kristin Mae “Kim” Serafica. As your speaker for
today, and as a ‘leader’ in my own right, I am honored to impart my knowledge on the
concept of leadership. To begin with, let me ask you; how do you define a leader?

According to vocabulary.com a leader is a person who leads or commands a

group, organization, or a country. As fitting as this definition may be, leadership cannot
be appreciated in one sentence. Looking at that definition, is that the only thing needed
for you to be called a leader? Is having subordinates to follow you the only prerequisite?
I’m telling you ladies and gentleman that is not it. Our freedom fighters were also great
leaders but they are not called leaders because people just follow them but because
they have the perseverance to achieve independence for their countrymen. They have
goals and purpose to even sacrifice their own lives for it.

All of us can define what a leader is but how can we become a good leader.
What qualities are needed to be one? What leadership actually entails? These are the
questions that you must be wrestling with in order to know the answers.

First of all, please understand that leadership doesn’t involve discrimination. For
instance, there is still the domination or subjugation of the weaker sex; the enduring
bias against women. In the first place, there is no such thing as a ‘weaker sex’. We
should be focusing on equality. The world is already full with such people who have an
ardent desire to rule and take charge of other peoples’ lives using their perceived
superiority—that is not the trait of a good leader.

The true leader is someone who earns respect through his rightful actions and
mass following without any dictatorship. He inspires others to follow his footsteps and
become the guiding light for the humanity. Besides, the true meaning of leadership is to
have the inherent charm to attract followers without any form of coercion.

So let me tell you that leaders are those who are great orators having the
aptitude to share their vision with the people around and having the convincing ability.
They are passionate about what they do and dedicated to accomplishing their
aim in life, for example is to lead the country for a good cause. I myself never thought of
entering the world of politics before. I can’t even make my younger sister follow me;
How much more for the people around me. But as I grew and matured, my perspective
changed. I saw the things that should be focused on and I’ve got ideas that will help my
own city even the country. I became dedicated in achieving my goals and that’s what
placed me to where I am right now. I would always be grateful to all the supporters who
trusted me.

I will also add courage as one of the qualities of a true leader. They should be
courageous to take risks because life itself is precarious, we don’t have assurance on
everything and the action that we perform or every commitment we make definitely
cannot be without a risk factor. It’s okay fail but as we fail we also need to have the
courage to stand up again and continue pursuing our aims; to do our purpose because
we are not alone, as we became a leader people look up on us and we cannot let them
down.

Another is curiosity, why does a leader need to be curious? Because along with
listening true leaders ask lots of questions. They are open about what they don’t know
and are willing to learn, absorb, and apply what they’ve learned for the benefit of their
people or members.

Next is cooperation because being a leader is not about commanding people

but being the member themselves. They cooperate and work with everyone to achieve
their goals. Leaders don’t command they execute everything with everyone.

I can also say that a true leader is also a great teacher, why do you think I say
so? It is because great teachers work towards empowering others and is able to
develop the requisite set of skills. If I talk from the standpoint of a student, I would say
that our role model and leader are our teachers who unfailingly impart good thoughts to
us and motivate us to become responsible individuals. They patiently deal with all the
students and foster positive attitude in us so that we grow up as reliable and
compassionate beings.
There can be lots of qualities a true leader should have and these are just some
of those but to sum it up, a true leader is an individual who can lead the way and
become a torch bearer for the masses to follow, they are great not because of their
power but, because of their ability to empower others. Always remember that all of us
can be a leader because leadership is action, not a position.

Thank you for listening.
