ABSTRACT

Background: Electronic waste refers to unwanted, obsolete electronic and

electrical products. Ever increasing usage of electronics and electrical
equipment has resulted in piling up of e-waste. The current practices of e-waste
management in our locality encounters many challenges like the difficulty in
ineffective regulations, pathetic and unsafe conditions of recycling, lack of
awareness of consumers and reluctance on part of the stakeholders to address
the issues. As a result toxic materials enter the waste stream with no special
precautions to avoid the known adverse impacts on the environment and human
health.
Objectives:The purpose of this present study was to find out knowledge on e-
waste management, minimal expenditure to electronic items, the life expectancy of
the products, and suggest strategies for effective e-waste management in India.
Methodology & Work plan:A self prepared was used to interview 50 candidates
who were randomly selected from our locality.we questioned on their awareness to
wards e-waste and asked questions related to its management. We conducted
survey and found out still there’s a need of educating the people. We will analyse
the data conducted and come to an conclusion
Observation: We found that people with good economy had where a bit aware
about this issue but others were not even knowing its consequences. . By this we
found the increasing cases of pollution..We found that the unorganized sector of
recyclers had led to the environmental issues of this E-waste which we have further
explain in the write-up.
Results & Conclusion: Thus the present study exhibits that despite the fact
that the citizens of Vittal having at least 50% knowledge on the disposal of e
waste, but still there isn't a proper system in our locality for the collectivism of
these e-waste. Management of solid waste is a huge task and has become more
complex due to introduction of e-waste in solid waste disposal system. The
paper discusses the need for detailed assessment of the current and future
scenario of e-waste generation and its disposal including the need for a proper
management system in our locality . The paper also discusses unorganized
sector of recycling in our locality and explains the hazardous techniques used
by the illiterate workers employers in this dismantling for recovery of precious
metals. This way of polluting the environment is not a sound management. So
it must given to the hand of the organized sector, who reduces the magnitude of
e-waste as they have a potential to conserve the energy and keep the
environment free of toxic material that would otherwise have been released.
The paper discusses some of the sustainable e-waste strategies

TITLE OF THE PROJECT:

E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IN VITTAL

INTRODUCTION:

In the 20th Century, the information and communication revolution has

brought enormous changes in the way we organize our lives, our economies,
industries and institution. At the same time, these have led to manifold
problems including the problem of massive amount of hazardous waste and
other wastes generated from electric products. Rapid growth of technology,
upgradation of technical innovations, and a high rate of obsolescence in the
electronics industry have led to one of the fastest growing waste streams in the
world which consist of end of life electrical and electronic equipment.
The electronics industry is the world’s largest and fastest growing
manufacturing industry. In the last few years, it has played a significant part in
social-economic and technological growth of societies. The Basel convention
defines wastes as substances or objects which are disposed off or are intended
to be disposed of by the provisions of national laws.
There are so many types of wastes and e-waste is one of its types. Electronic
waste or e-waste for short is a generic term embracing various forms of electric
and electronic equipment that have ceased to be of any value to their owners.
The e-waste management strategies in India should address issues from
production and trade to final disposal, including technology transfers for the
recycling of electronic waste. This should include proper training, legislation
and guidelines for all involved. E-waste contain over 1000 different substances
many of which are toxic and potentially hazardous to environment and human
health, if these are not handled in an environmentally sound manner. During
dismantling of the e-waste if there's isn't a proper security there occurs a
leakage of hazardous toxic gas which causes diseases like lung cancer,
plumbism, hydrargism, growth retardation.
Dakshina kannnada is awarded as a smart city with a rapid growth of
technologies and its infrastructure. As high its reaching the chance of its
exploitation are also being increased. Of the total e-waste in karnataka 16.37%
of waste is produced in our district.

5
Thus a cross-sectional study was planned among the students of Jawahar
Navodaya Vidhyalaya, Mudipu, to create a awareness among the citizens on
the adverse affects of e-waste which is future ones of today's electronic
appliances.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

To Study:
 Their knowledge on the existing issue E-Waste Management.
 their expense towards electronic/electrical appliances every year.
 To create awareness to resolve this issue by giving them on proper
disposal methods.
 The life expectancy of common home appliances.

HYPOTHESIS

Most of the people of our locality do not know the adverse effects of the
E-waste . Some people ignore and do not follow the proper method of
disposal of those in our locality. As in our locality due to the lack of
knowledge on this issue. The disposal are not being effective towards
the economy of the country and due to the unorganized dismantlers, the
hazardous chemicals are made free to enter the atmosphere and may
cause many kinds of diseases in our locality.

NEED STATEMENT & RELEVANCE

Being a fastest developing city E-Waste Management is a challenge to our

locality and there is great need to reduce and create awareness among that in

the people of our locality.

METHODOLOGY

 GATHERING DATA:
 We referred many books for more knowledge. We visited scarp shops
and drop off centre around our locality to gather more information about
6
the topic. We interacted with scrap shop dealers about the way they
collect, segregate and dispose the e-waste.
 SURVEY:
 We conducted a survey in various homes and scrap shops in our locality
.We interacted with many e-waste dealers about its effects and
mitigation .We visited many places to know the sources of e- waste
disposal in our locality.

DATA ANALYSIS

Majority of the population belonged to the age group 30-40 years 47 per
cent, mean age is 36 years. Out of [n=50] 22 per cent were female and most of
the respondents were males 78 per cent per cent since head of the family was
the preferred respondent. Majority of the study population were men.

Out of those many candidates when we questioned them at their place of

disposal of e-waste majority of 48% sold them to unorganized sector of
recyclers, 18% of them threw it to dustbins, 28% of them kept it at home, 2%
sell it to organized sector and the rest 2% sold it in websites for a good price
Most of the respondents perceived minimum 5-6 electronic appliances to get
repaired. Most of them responded they chose to repair if the appliance is costly
and the rest 34% repaired it as it was useful. 100% of the respondents told that
they chose to repair the costly ones. There were some questions on the life
expectancy on usual home appliances<.>such as laptops, television, mobiles
etc. We found that 100% of the candidates could tell that at least one advantage
of disposal of e-waste. The most common advantage they told they got money
while selling it to local scrap shop dealers.

RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS

 In our present study we found that 92% of our subjects had some
knowledge on e-waste, but it was a disappointing matter that 8% of
subjects in our locality never ever heard there's a kind of waste named E-
WASTE.
 Out of those 46 subjects only 4% disposed it in sound manner and the
rest members were not using the correct method of disposing e-waste.
 Out of those 2 subjects using right method 1 disposed it to a organized
sector DROP OFFF CENTRE as he’s a environmentalist.
 Other one sold the e- waste in a web named NAMO PLANET.com
where he sold it for a fair price.
 Below there’s the scanned copy of the sample certificate given by that
subject and guided us further in this research.

18
 In our study 28% of them kept the e-waste in their home. Which was the
best instead of disposing it through unorganized sector.
 The disappointing is that 96% of our subjects are not following the
proper way of disposal. Which will cause many ill effects on
environment in future.
 After the research we found that the life-expectancy of the home
appliances have got reduced, which is contributing a lot for the future in
production of e-waste.
 In our study we also found that the maximum electronic items which are
being repaired are by the good economy people and the poor economy

19
people and the averaged economy people would be the least ones to
repair their products.
 48% of the subject knew almost average about the disposal of e-waste,
but they couldn’t follow that because there wasn’t a proper system
developed in our locality so they had follow the others harmful practices.
 After we had a interaction with our local scrap shop dealer, we came to
know that unorganized way of disposing even causes harm to our society
as there is no proper security while dismantling the gadgets.
 Therefore the people in or locality were very much unaware of the
present issue.

MY NEW IDEAS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE

My new way of approach is that the producer of the electronic devices

must be made responsible for that particular e-waste of that device.
After selling the product he should assure the costumer that he’ll be
paying a amount of money if he brings the device back after end of its
life. That time producer can pay at least 90% of the money he would
get by recycling the device to the consumer, where even the producer
will get 10% profit by following this type of recycling.
I felt this to be well versed and came to this conclusion after
discussing this with resourceful persons

CONCLUSIONS

Thus the present study exhibits that despite the fact that the citizens of Vittal
having a lot many electronic services, disposing those e-waste in our locality
has become a haphazard issue. One of the major factor is that majority of the
citizen are not aware about this problem in our locality, even though they are
aware about this there isn't a proper organized sector of recyclers those who
can he;p the citizens so that they can make a sound management. And we could
find that only unskilled labourer s were working in the unorganized sector of
recyclers. They didn’t have proper safety measures while dismantling the
products. They intake all the hazardous gases, which make him weak. The
main reasons for subjects a sell their e-waste in unorganized sector is because
mainly the near most to their residence and they got a little amount of money.
But totally the current practise of management in our locality causes a huge
problem in future.
20
SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

Improper manner of E-waste management has become most prevalent

in the society. Every day there's injurious gases eliminated to the
environment. So for the right method disposal first of all our citizens
must be made aware on this burning issue.

We found that majority of the e-waste in our locality comes to the

unorganized sector
where they don’t have safety and a lot precious metals in
extraction are wasted as they don’t have that much sophisticated
technology to extract these precious metal so they must be send to
organized sector.
So government should increase the no. Of organized sector of
recycling and they should also develop a sound manner of
transportation facility for the citizens to sump the e-waste.

The following recommendation are every essential to follow by the

subjects,

 Regarding, how to practice the E-waste management for the

organized sector
 We also provided some knowledge about the harmful effects of e-
waste and what would be its consequences if continued
 The participants were also advised regarding how the unorganized
sector is polluting our environment and how it effects the employee’s
health also.
 We also advised the participants not to just throw the spoilt
electronic items try to make it repair and reuse it.
 don’t buy as many electronic you wish the less you buy electronic
gadgets the less e-waste is generated

As “TODAY’S ELECTRONIC GADGETS ARE TOMMOROWS E-WASTE

 The participants were told to keep in check with CAMPAIGN’S s

taken by the governments.
21
FUTURE PLAN

 First of all there’s a lot need of educating the people. That will be

our foremost responsibility.

 We look for forward to do further investigation on this project.

 We should gather more information on this project by taking

district as survey area

 If we get selected for regional s will visit our subjects once again

and check whether our guidelines have come to action or not.
