Revision Worksheet – 1

SPHERICAL MIRRORS

1. An object is placed at a distance of 12cm in front of a concave mirror. It forms a real

image four times larger than the object. Calculate the distance of the image from the
mirror.
2. An object is placed at a distance of 25cm from the pole of a spherical mirror which
forms real, inverted and image on the same side of the object at 37.5cm from the pole.
Calculate the focal length of the mirror and find nature of the mirror.
3. The image of an object formed by a mirror is real inverted and is of magnification -1.
If the image distance is 40cm from the mirror, where is the object placed? Where
would the image be if the object is moved 20cm towards the mirror? State reason and
draw ray diagram for the new position.
4. It is desired to obtain an erect image of an object using concave mirror of focal length
of 12cm.
a. What should be the range of distance of an object placed in front of the mirror?
b. Will the image be smaller or larger? Draw ray diagram.
c. Where will the image of this object be if it is placed 24cm in front of the mirror?
Draw ray diagram to justify your answer, show the positions of the pole, principal
focus and centre curvature in the above diagram.
5. To construct a ray diagram we use two rays of light which are so chosen that it is easy
to determine their directions after reflection from the mirror. Choose these rays and
state the path of these rays after reflection from a concave mirror. Use these two rays
to find the nature and position of the image of an object placed at a distance of 15cm
from a concave mirror of focal length 10cm.
6. A spherical mirror produces an image of magnification -1 on a screen placed at a
distance of 50cm from the mirror.
a. Write the type of mirror.
b. Find the distance of the image from the object.
c. What is the focal length of the mirror?
d. Draw the ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.
7. An erect image 3 times the size of the object is obtained with a concave mirror of
radius of curvature 36 cm. What is the position of the object?
8. When an object is placed at a distance of 60cm from a convex spherical mirror, the
magnification produced is 0.5. Where should the object be placed to get a
magnification of 1/3 ?
9. An object is placed 18cm in front of a spherical mirror. If the image is formed at 4cm
to the right of the mirror, calculate its focal length. Is the mirror convex or concave?
What is the nature of the image? What is the radius of curvature of the mirror?
10. A convex mirror use for rear view on an automobile has a radius of curvature of 3m .
If a bus is located at 5m from this mirror, find the position, nature and magnification
of the image.
