CONCEPT PAPER

STEM ACTION SONG COMPETITION


FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MALAYSIA

1.0 Introduction

The STEM Action Song Competition is held to create awareness and encourage pupils to enjoy
the learning of STEM.

2.0 Objectives

2.1 To develop confidence and familiarity with STEM among the young learners.

2.2 To develop skills of integrating the scripting of music, movement along with STEM and
language.

2.3 To provide a platform of learning STEM in a fun and enjoyable manner.

3.0 Competition Rules

3.1 Eligibility: This competition is open to Year Four, Year Five, or a mixture of Year
4 and Year 5 pupils from government-aided schools only. However, private schools
are encouraged to participate in district and state level.

3.1.1 Each STEM Action Song team comprises members from the same school.

3.2 Team: Each team should comprise 5 to 15 pupils inclusive of performers and musicians.
Each team should be accompanied by 3 teachers.

3.3 Time: On-stage presentation is 5 to 8 minutes. Marks will be deducted thereafter. 2


minutes is allocated for stage preparation before and another 2 minutes after the
presentation with the two teachers as stage technicians.

3.3.1 Performance should be confined to the stage only.

3.3.2 The timing of the presentation starts with the first movement, first sound of
music, first word uttered by the singers or any sound effects produced.

3.4 Theme: Choice or selection of theme is on STEM within the Primary School
Syllabus.

3.5 Lyrics:

3.5.1 Lyrics can be original or adapted.

3.5.2 Contestants are not allowed to refer to any notes or texts during presentation.
3.5.3 Three (3) copies of the lyrics must be submitted to the organisers. For
national level, the copies of the lyrics must be submitted during
registration of the competition.
3.5.4 Lyrics should not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, etc.

3.6 Presentation: Creativity is encouraged. Nevertheless, movements should not


exceed and overwhelm the articulation of the song by the contestants.
Overdramatisation, miming and prompting are not allowed.

3.7 Props: Props should be minimal.

3.8 The use of excessive devices or tools, which could disturb the flow of the
competition, is not permitted.

3.8 Costume: Participants should wear appropriate costumes and relevant with the theme.

3.9 Music:

3.9.1 Only minus-one music is allowed, which is saved in a form of CD or flash


drive.

3.9.2 Music used can be original or adapted.

3.9.3 Use of musical instruments is allowed. However, musicians must sing and
perform together with the team members during presentation.

3.9.4 The performance must be a continuous medley of songs without any obvious
gaps or breaks.

3.10 The microphones will be prepared by the organiser. The use of clip microphone
is not allowed.

3.11 Judges:

3.11.1 The competition shall be judged by a panel of 3 or 5 judges.

3.11.2 Judges must be a combination of teachers with Science,


Mathematics and English Language background.

3.11.3 Judges adjudicate on different task respectively.

3.12 Decisions:

3.12.1 A panel of at least 3 or 5 judges will be appointed for all the rounds at all
levels. The competition at the national level will be judged by a panel of 5
judges, appointed by the Division of Co-curriculum and Arts, Ministry of
Education.

3.12.2 Points will be awarded according to the scoresheet.

3.12.3 The team with the majority of votes will be declared the winner.

3.12.4 The decision of the judges is final.


3.12.5 Individual team marks will not be disclosed.

4.0 Prizes:

4.1 Plaques and certificates of achievement will be awarded to the winning teams.

4.2 Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participating teams.

Note:
• The winning teams from the previous year may participate in the current year but the
text and presentation must not be an exact replica.

• The organising process should be flexible so that any change can be incorporated during
the competition.

• This concept paper is valid until further notification or revision from the Ministry of
Education and can be used at all levels for competitions organised by the Ministry.

2. Adjudication:

2.1 Contents (45 marks - Judge 1 and Judge 2)


Marks will beawarded based on the following:
i. on STEM matters
ii. must consist a minimum of two STEM related elements
iii. accurate STEM facts and concept

2.2 Delivery and Presentation (35 marks – Judge 3 and


Judge Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. correct use of grammar and effective choice of words (diction)
ii. well coordinated and creative choreography
iii. voice projection and clarity
iv. team cooperation and coordination

2.3 Theme (15 marks – Judge 5)


Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. must be related with STEM matters
ii. interesting and appealing
iii. continuity in sequence and action
iv. integrated moral and scientific values

2.4 Costumes and Props (5 marks – Judge 5)


Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. suitability
ii. creativity

3. Penalty:
A total of 5 marks to be deducted if:
i. sensitive issues touched
ii. below or above stipulated time (on-stage presentation)
iii. above stipulated time (stage preparation before and after the presentation)
