ACTIVITY: CONTACTLESS CARDS
1. First, elicit your own mental model. Write down how you think contactless cards (Figure 3.13) work –
where customers “wave” their debit or credit card over a card reader instead of typing in a PIN.

 What information is sent between the card and the card reader when it is waved in front of it?
 What is the maximum amount you can pay for something using a contactless card?
 How many times can you use a contactless card in a day?
 Can you use your smartphones to pay in the same way? If so, how is that possible?
 What happens if you have two contactless cards in the same wallet/purse?
 What happens when your contactless card is stolen and you report it to the bank?
 What does the bank do? Next ask two other people the same set of questions.

2. Now analyze your answers. Do you get the same or different explanations? What do the findings
indicate? How accurate are people’s mental models of the way contactless cards work?

3. What other ways might there be for paying for purchases instead if using cash, debit, or credit cards?

4. Finally, How might you design a better conceptual model that would allow users to develop a better
mental model of Contactless cards? (Assuming this is a desirable goal)?

Answers:

1. Contactless cards are cards that has technology inside of it. It gives you a secure radio interface just
like android pay and other mobile wallets. They make the payment process easier and more efficient.

 The information that is sent between the Card and the reader when it is waved in front of it is
the radio frequency identification or near field communication.
 The maximum amount you can pay for something using a contactless card may vary between
banks. For transactions over a $100 a PIN or biometric authentication is required.
 There isn’t a daily limit for contactless payments, however from time to time, when you shop
using contactless payments, you’ll need to put your card into a machine and enter your pin to
verify that it’s you before you can use contactless again.
 Yes, we can use our smartphones the same way just like PayPal, Venmo, Apple pay, google pay
and many more. It is possible because of NFC or Near Field Communication. It is a short range
high frequency wireless communication technology that enables the exchange of data between
devices over about 20 cm distance.
 If I have two contactless cards in my wallet/purse if I am about to pay, the payment will be
rejected so it is advisable to remove your cards from your wallet/purse before using it.
 There is a chance that you’ll lose your money too. But when you report it to the bank, the bank
will make a way to solve that problem.
 The bank or your issuer will cancel the card then mail you a new one.

2. Yes, we get the same answers because we all think the same way that if something is lost just like
contactless cards, we should consult from the source.

3. We could also pay online, just like my given examples. PayPals, Venmo, Apple pay, Google pay and
many more.

4. If I could design a better mental model for contactless cards, I would prefer making it more user
friendly and making it more secured that even if it is stolen, no other chances that a thief can do to steal
your money and it will be built with a tracker to make it easier to track when it is stolen.
