Density-Based Traffic Management Apparatus for Crossroads Using a Microwave Sensor

Caloocan National Science & Technology High School

Last November 7th, 2019, we roamed around at TIP-QC, P.E. Center 1, to seek out for new
innovations presented by senior high school students, college students, and professionals from
different universities from different cities. While looking around, one presenter from Caloocan
National Science & Technology High School caught our eyes with their Density-Based Traffic
Management Apparatus for Crossroads Using a Microwave Sensor.
The aforementioned prototype aims to improve the current system in managing the flow of traffic
as according to the researchers, the Philippine’s current traffic signaling system is inefficient and
is underperforming which is evident in our country considering the current traffic lights does not
come with the function of weighing the density of vehicles in the lanes of an intersection. During
the presentation, we were shown a model of an intersection with opening of a junction having a
stoplight with different densities of traffic. The prototype’s main part, the microwave motion
sensor which are very cheap, are placed on the arms of metal poles; similar to the traffic lights that
can be found anywhere. These microwave sensors detect the flow of incoming traffic whether it
may be light or heavy; which then sends the information to their system for the algorithm to figure
out which junction should be given the least amount of time and the most amount of time.
Unfortunately, the researchers were not able to show us a simulation because the laptop which has
the algorithm was not working at the time of the presentation, but they were able to provide data
which proves that the prototype is more efficient by 7% to 13% than our present-day stoplights
and it allows the flow of traffic to become smoother by each lane having a different waiting time.
According to the findings during the research, the proposed traffic scheme allows the smooth
passage of traffic and effectively lessens the unnecessary waiting time thanks to the automatic
shifting of each lane in an intersection. Besides to the effectiveness of this prototype, it is a very
cost-efficient fix to the problem that this research is aiming to abolish.
Synthesis and Characterization of Cellulose Reinforced Chitosan Hydrogel as Potential
Bioink for 3D Printed Articular Cartillage Scaffolds
UP Diliman, Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering

As we went to the RICE-NCR (Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits National Capital Region)
exhibit in P.E Center 1 to look for interesting, new innovations that are brought by students from
different high schools and universities and professionals; an exhibit from UP Diliman, Department
of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering caught our eyes with their Cellulose
Reinforced Chitosan Hydrogel.
This new product claims to be a new cure for a chronic disease, Osteoarthritis, which affects 1 out
of 10 adults worldwide. It is the deterioration of the cartilage that cushions each ends of our joints
and as of now, there are no known cures into reversing the effects brought by Osteoarthritis. In
their exhibit, we were presented with their product and a model of the end of our joint, and the
researchers let the audience touch their Chitosan Hydrogel which has a soft and smooth texture
similar to hardened petroleum jelly. The Chitosan Hydrogel will be used to replace the affected
cartilage, and according to the researcher, its mechanical properties are better compared to those
of cellulose polymers. This is a cost-efficient fix compared to the medicine available which can
only lessen the effects of the said disease as the polymer of Hydrogel, Chitosan, only comes from
the shells of crustaceans that are widely available. It is made through the process of
Thermoresponsive Sol-Gel Transition which is, according to the researchers, relatively easy to
perform; it is then put into a 3D printer to produce the artificial cartilage that will take the place of
the previously infected cartilage between the joints.
This innovation can help millions of people where in fact, 240 million people are affected by
Osteoarthritis worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It has proven itself
to be cost-efficient, highly effective, and relatively easy to use compared to the other medicine that
will only reduce the effects of the said disease.

Fire Trike

In the year of 2017, there has been 14,000 fire incidents in the Philippines and has claimed the
lives of 304 civilians, injured 889 and caused P7.8 million worth of damage to properties according
to the Bureau of Fire Protection; where the leading cause of fires are faulty electrical connections,
lit cigarette butts, and stoves left unattended. With the goal of lessening these numbers, Valenzuela
Inventors Producers Society Inc. has come up with an improvement to our current system of
responding to fire: the Fire Trike.
The fire trike, brought upon us by Mr. Ed Capule and Ben Mendoza of the Valenzuela Inventors
Producers Society Inc., is a first responder to fire incidents where they are planning to place near
Barangay halls for a shorter distance for it to cover before reaching the place affected. It is an
electric motorcycle with a carrier mounted behind it and is fully equipped with 3 different fire
extinguishers for different situations. It also has a solar panel which enables it to be stored without
the battery getting drained while it is not in use and lessens the amount of energy used as you can
power the fire trike with renewable energy. It also comes with an app that notifies every fire station
within its distance while the fire trike is on its way to the occurring fire incident which allows the
efficiency of it to be maximized. Thanks to its very compact design it can go through alleys, and
tight streets which normal fire trucks cannot go through; adding more value to its relatively low
price, according to the researchers.
The Fire Trike is an improvement to the current emergency response system as we are still lacking
with proper resources when it comes to fire incidents as hundreds of families are still suffering
from the damage and loss property, injuries, and death in many cases which are caused by fire.
Through the addition of a fire trike, its mobility and equipped with modern-day technology could
definitely improve the response time when it comes to emergencies.
