SYNOPSIS/PROPOSAL FORMAT
Before starting to work on Dissertation/Article, the FCPS trainee has to send a Synopsis to RTMC
and get it approved. The synopsis is a brief out line (about four A-4 size pages or 1000 words is the
maximum limit) of your future work.

A synopsis must have the following headings:

TITLE: Should reflect the objectives of the study. It must be written after the whole synopsis has
been written so that it is a true representative of the plan (i.e. the synopsis).

INTRODUCTION: Should contain brief background of the selected topic. It must identify the
importance of study, its relevance and applicability of results. It must clearly state the purpose of
the study.

Review of Literature:

A review of the relevant literature showing the work done previously in the area of proposed research
is essential to plan further research effectively. The information given in the review should be
supported by references. As separate chapters as per requisite of the subject

Statement of the Problem:

A problem statement is the description of an issue currently existing which needs to be addressed. It
provides the context for the research study and generates the questions which the research aims to
answer. The statement of the problem is the focal point of any research

Scope of the Study:

Any time that a task of doing a research is to be undertaken, the essential guideline is to define
explicitly the scope of the study. ... The scope of the study basically means all those things that will
be covered in the research project

OBJECTIVES: An objective is intent of what the researcher wants to do stated in clear measurable
terms.”

In general, research objectives describe what we expect to achieve by a project. ... Research
objectives may be linked with a hypothesis or used as a statement of purpose in a study that does not
have a hypothesis.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION: Is the definition of the exposure and outcome variables of
interest in context to objective in a particular study and their means of Measurement/determination.

Examples:
l Anemia
l Effectiveness
l PPH
l Wound healing

HYPOTHESIS: A hypothesis is a statement showing expected relation b/w 2 variables. A

hypothesis is needed in the following study designs:

Examople:

H0 -There is a relationship between Education & Income

H1 - There is no relationship between Education & Income

Research Methodology

Research Design

Research Design The research design is the structure with in which research is conducted. A research
design is the arrangement of conditions for the collections and analysis of the data in a manner that
aims to combine to the research purpose. It constitutes the collection, measurement and analysis of
data. Research design gives an outline of everything from defining the problems in terms of objectives
to final analysis of data.

Data Collection

The present study incorporates the collection of both primary and secondary data for an in depth
investigation.

Primary data has been gathered through structured unbiased questionnaire. The questionnaire was
pre- tested on 20 respondents and minor modifications were made to the questionnaire on the basis
of pre- testing.

Secondary data was gathered through, the information received from the magazines like outlook,
Business world, Business Today, journals and online sources.

Sample Design

SAMPLE SIZE: How many patients will be included. If there are groups how many per group?
Further - Read Research Methodology Text Book
SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Read Research Methodology Text Book

SAMPLE SELECTION: Read Research Methodology Text Book

Inclusion criteria: on what bases will patients be inducted in the study.

Exclusion criteria: On what bases will patients be excluded from the study.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE: A detailed account of how the researcher will perform
research; how she will measure the variable.

It includes:

• Identification of the study variables

• Methods for collection of data
• Data collection tools (proforma/questionnaire)

DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE: Relevant details naming software to be used, which

descriptive statistics and which test of significance if and when required, specifying variables where
it will be applied. (Mention the Statistical Tools)

Limitations of the Study:

CHAPTER SCHEME:
