Flexible hose of smaller diameter than the entry duct, will be used to increase the pressure of

concrete flowing out.

A single way valve must also be fitted at the end of the hose to allow the use of the concrete
upon the required need and quantity.

For ease of mobility, the main compartment must be allowed to move using suitable means
with the help of a handle bar.

Since the system consist of three main components, the latter must be able to be detached
properly and easily for ease of transport and maintainability.

The pumping system must be able to run on 240 V 60 Hz household power supply available
on the site.

After use, the entire system must be able to be washed down using water and concrete brush.

The maintenance of the system must include the use of lubricating oil and basic tool set.

Since the machine will be operated in open air, appropriate corrosion measures must be taken.

After usage, the machine must easily be unbolted to the entry duct, the main compartment and
the flexible hose separately and all these should fit snugly in the back of a small lorry or in a
small trailer.

Types of materials

The material selection is crucial, since the mechanical properties of the materials will
determine whether the crane will be capable of sustaining that load or not.

5.3.1 Selection of mild steel frames

The material used in constructing the arm which is of a hollow circular section is cold
rolled steel. Cold rolled steel was used because like any other steel it has properties which
make it suitable for this application. Some of these properties are; good weld ability, good
ductility, and high strength in tension, easy formability, smooth and clean surface. Since the
design is for medium load capacity, mild steel of the following composition is suitable.

Table 1. Chemical composition of mild steel.

C (%) Mn (%) Si (%) S (%) P (%) Cr (%)

Mild steel
0.16-0.18 0.70-0.90 ≤ 0.04 ≤ 0.04 ≤ 0.04 0.50-0.60

5.3.2 Material for belt

Leather is the most significant material for flat belts. Leather belts are made from steer leather
(cut from either side of the backbone of a steer). The fibres on the flesh side are stronger and
parallel to the surface while fibres on the hair side are smoother and perpendicular to the
surface. The hair side of the belt gives a more intimate contact between belt and pulley. It
ensures the greater tensile stress on the outer side of the belt is on the flesh side of the belt.

5.3.3 Material for the buckets

The buckets to transport the concrete attached to the conveyor belt will be made of metals
copper and stainless steel which make it suitable for the purpose of carrying liquefied material.

5.3.4 Fabrication of the machine

The fabrication of the machine involves cutting operation, welding operation, drilling
operation, machine operation, etc.

Aesthetics

Since the conveyor is designed for transporting concrete, surely there will be spills and
accumulation of concrete on the belt. Dirty belt surfaces can impair the belt’s carrying ability
and properties that can lead to conveying and processing problems. Dirty belts should be
prevented for a better efficiency as well as for aesthetic reasons. To maintain continuous
cleanliness as well as to give the conveyor a better appearance the whole machine (include
each bucket and belt) will be sprayed by a superhydrophobic and oleophobic spray which is a
spray made using nanotechnology and therefore will prevent concrete from accumulating on
any part of the machine. This also acts as a means of efficiently preserving the paint coating of
the machine thus giving a good aesthetic to the designed machine
