2014 REGIONAL FINALS METROBANK-MTAP.DEPND MATH CHALLENGE

TO : ALL SCHOOLS DIVISION ST]PERINTENDENTS

1. The Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI), Mathematics Teachers Association of the


Philippines (MTAP), and DepEd Region IV-A CAIABARZON will hold the 2014
Regional Finals Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge on February 20, 20 5 at
Santa Cruz Central School, Santa Cruz Laguna.

2. The overall objective ofthe competition is to contribute to the improvement ofthe quality
of Mathematics education in the Philippines. Specifically, it aims to.

a. awaken greater interest in Mathematics among elementary pupils and high school
students in both public and private schools in the region;
b. encourage students to strive for excellence in Mathematics;
c. encourage mastery ofbasic mathematical skills;
d. discover mathematical talents among the pupils/students,
e. develop the values of hard work, perseverance, honesty, teamwork, and
sportsmanship, and
f provide them with opportunities in leadership and cooperative undertaking.

3 The host Division shall be in-charge ofthe preparation of the venue ofthe contest proper
including the registration, contest officials, and the materials that will be used in the
contest, such as score sheet (hard and soft copy), score board, computers, LCD/DLP,
screen, (stop) watch, and scratch paper ofthe contestants.

4. The competition is open to Grades 5, 6, 9 and 4fr year for individual and team category.
Grade 6 and Fourth Year winners may participate/compete in the national level.

5. Panicipants to this activity are Education Program Supervisors in Vathemarics, EPS in-
charge ofPrivate Schools and principals ofparticipating schools and Division winners for
Crrades 5, 6, 9 and Fourth Year High School who will represent the Division for Regional
Finals

6. Travelling and other allowable expenses to be incurred by the participants shall be
charged against local funds subject to the usual accounting and auditing procedure.

7. Teachers such as, officiating offrcials, coaches/trainers who will participate in this
activity shall make necessary arangements to ensure the non-interruption of classes
during their attendance to this activity.

GUIDELINES

Individual Competition (Written)

1. The test will consist ofthree types ofquestions:


Part I: Fifteen (15) questions worth 2 points each;
Part fI: Five (5) questions worth 3 points each; and
Part III: Three (3) questions worth 5 points each.
Total of60 points.

2. The contestants will be given 1.5 hours to answer the test.

3. Partial credit will be given to answers in Part tr and Itr.

4. There may be more than one corrector for the papers, but only one correct either Part
II or III for the
sake of consistency in the giving of partial credit.

5. The top three scorers will be declared winners and awarded medals provided they
meet the "hurdle rate" of25 points out ofa paper score of60 points.

Team Competition (Oral)

1. Each team will be provided with slips of paper for the answer to each question.
Before the first questio4 they will write their team,/individual identification on each
slip.

2. There shall be 20 questions:


Ten (10) fifteen-seconds worth 2 points each,
Five (5) thirty-second question worth 3 points each. and
Five (5) one-minute questions worth 5 points each.
Total of60 poinrs.

2.1 The i5-second questions are to be answered mentally. There will be no writing
an]'rxhere, neither on papeq table etc. The team oftwo will work together as one
to discuss their answer to the question. They may start discussing their solution
after reading ofthe question.

2.2 For the 3O-second questions, scratch paper will be provided for each team.
Contestants may begin solving as soon as they wish.

2.3 For 1-minute questions, a copy ofthe questions will be provided for each team.
Scratch paper will be provided.
3. The quizmaster will read each question twice, after he/she gives the GO signal. The
timing starts when the quizmaster gives the GO signal.

4. Answer will be written on the official answer slips provided. As soon as the buzzer
rings. everybody must stop writing.

5. Proctors will collect the answer slips give them back to the judges who classify them
in to two sets: those with correct answers and those with wrong answers.

6. One ofthe judges will announce the teams with the correct answer. The scorers
records the points obtained by each team for each correct answer.

7. Answers must be given indicating unit of measuremenl. However, if the unit of


measurement is already given in the questioq it need not be given in the answer.

8. The teams will be ranked according to their total score in the three parts to determine
the winners.

9. In case of tie among ofthe teams vying for the first three (3) places, a set of 3
a
questions will be given to break the tie, one from each category ofquestions. Ifthe tie
is not broken after the three questions, one tie-breaking question will be asked. The
team who first gets the correct answer will be declared as winner.

10. The same Mechanics will be followed for the individual contest.
