THE EFFICIENCY OF “NO PLASTIC POLICY”

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Nowadays, the products we use in our daily lives are commonly made of plastic

material, which makes it present and available in every house. It is often used in large-

scale such as construction, electrical and electronic applications, packaging, and

transport. Cheap, versatile, lightweight, flexible and resistant – these are just a few of the

characteristics of plastic that makes it beneficial, however at the same time these plastics

are source of negative impact in the ocean and also wildlife health. Last 2015, the world

produced 381 million tones of plastics, but it takes 1,000 years to decompose in landfills.

An average life expectancy of men that’s been recorded in the Philippines is 67 years; in

conclusion, human death is faster than the decay of plastics.

According to Per Vince and Hadesty (2017), about 6-17 million tons of plastic

enters the oceans every year, that releases hazardous chemicals such as dioxins,

phthalates, vinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, lead, and cadmium, which can harm the

sea creatures that serve as a threat to the marine ecosystem.. Nearly 700 species have

been known to interact with these plastics, including plastic bags, and having

deteriorating effects on vertebrate animals. We know that plastic can be very harmful to

our entire ecosystems. Plastic manages to sneak into and damage several bodily

functions of animals. Hungry animals usually smell food in plastic containers and bags.

However, their curiosity and desire for food often cause them to get their heads, feet or

wings trapped in the plastic. Our job as knowledgeable citizens of this planet is to do our

bit to ensure the protection of hastily declining and enormously endangered plant and

animal life.
