Professor - Industry Lecturer
I. Abstract

This proposed electrical plan is a 5 storey unit, is to be

presented to Engr. Generoso Restubog. The design should
meet all the Philippine electrical code requirements and to be
evaluated by Engr. Restubog.
Herein attached with, the power layout, lighting layout, fire
alarm system. It also include the lighting fixture schedule that to
be installed for illuminating the house. The design also considered
environmental constraint. To solve this problem 80% of the
lighting fixture is LED wherein it can help to conserve energy
therefore lessening the emission of carbon dioxide. The electrical
materials and devices that will be used in this design are available
in the local market the catalogs and brochure is also attached in
this design for reference. This is design is for educational purposed
only.

II. Design Project Description and Objectives

Commercial building unit is a building that consists solely of

two floor dwelling unit and three floor offices. Typical electrical
loads of in a dwelling unit includes lighting, small appliances (i.e.,
computers, televisions, radio etc.), washing machines, heaters,
air-conditioning equipment, electric range/ovens and water pump.
Typical electrical loads in an office is air-condition unit, lighting
and motor.
This design project aims to enable the student to design a
single dwelling unit while applying the knowledge and the
standards set by the Philippine Electrical Code.

III. Design Project Requirements

 The commercial building must be at least five (5) storey-

high with no minimum total floor area.
 Architectural floor plan, perspectiveand elevation plan of
selected residential building must be submitted to the
course professor for approval prior to commencing the
design works.
 Any electrical design plan prepared using unapproved
architectural plan shall not be accepted.
 All design plans must be drawn in autocad.

IV. Basis of Design

a. Codes and Standards

The design shall conform/adopt the minimum requirements

of the following codes and standards
 Philippine Electrical Code (PEC)
 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
 Fire Code of the Philippines
 National Building Code of the Philippines

b. Service

230V, single-phase, 2wire overhead service from utility

company shall be provided for the commercial building.
This will terminate on a private pole or concrete pedestal
where the electric meter and service equipment shall also
be installed.

c. Power Distribution System

Service entrance conductor from the service equipment

shall be installed underground and routed to terminate to a
main panelboard to be installed to an appropriate location
inside the residential building.

Two or more panelboards shall be provided. One power

panelboard shall serve the individual branch circuits for
motors, electric ranges, heaters and other single loads
greater than 1000VA.

A separate panelboard shall be provided for lighting outlets

and small appliance (convenience) outlets branch circuits.

Voltage drop shall be calculated for feeders greater than

50m in length (one-way run) and shall comply with the
minimum requirement of PEC.

Adequate number of branch circuits or lighting and

appliances shall be provided to accommodate the total load
demand, uniform load distribution/sharing and the
requirements of PEC.

d. Lighting System

Switch controlled lighting outlets shall be provided for all

area as required by PEC.

Appropriate illumination level as per IESNA standard shall

be maintained in the various areas of the residential
building

Zonal cavity method shall be used for manual calculation

of interior lighting system.

Luminaire/lighting fixture schedule shall be provided to

indicate the rating/specifications and features of the
selected luminaires.

Types of luminaires and their corresponding switch control

device shall be clearly indicated on the lighting
layout/plan.

Photometric data used for calculation shall also be

provided.
e. Power Outlets

Adequate no of outlets shall be provided to meet the total

demand load and spacing requirements between outlets as
required by PEC.

All outlets shall be to be of grounding-type.

GFCI outlets as required by the PEC shall be indicated on

the plan.

Single loads greater than 1000VA shall be provided with a

dedicated(individual) branch circuit.

Mounting height of power outlets shall be indicated on the

plan

f. Fire Alarm System.

Fire detection and alarm devices (smoke detectors ,heat

detectors, manual pull-down alarm switch and alarm
bellshall be included on the plan.

g. Wiring Materials, Equipment and Devices

All wiring materials, equipment and devices to be specified

on the electrical plan shall be available on the local
market, energy efficient and does not pollute the
environment

V. Problems and Constraints to be Addressed in the Design

 Must satisfy minimum requirements of Philippine Electrical

Code for safety
 Must apply energy efficient product and/or system
 Zonal Calculation can’t be applied for due to insufficient
parameters.

VI. Design Project Deliverables

The said single dwelling family- unit is an inspired Sizable

Craftsman Home Plan with Upstairs Master. It has a total floor area of
506.414 sqm. The dwelling unit has 6 bedrooms included the master
bedroom. It is also consists of 5 bedrooms and 6 walk in closets. It has
a vertical and horizontal siding, on the exterior of this Craftsman home
plan, blend with stone accents to create visual interest and curb appeal.
The open layout combines the great room, dining room, and kitchen,
and large windows provide grand rearward views. A large, kitchen island
anchors the living space, and the adjoining covered porch gives plenty
of space to grill. Upstairs, discover the master bedroom behind French
doors, along with a spacious en suite with a freestanding tub and a
massive walk-in closet. Three additional bedrooms also reside on the
second level; one includes a full bath, and two share the hall bath. A
large bonus room - factored into the total living area - provides a
common space for the kids to enjoy. Downstairs, a generous recreation
room with a wet bar greets you, as well as a bedroom and sizable
storage room. The foundation type is a standard walkout foundation.
Exterior walls is a standard 2x6. Dimension is 60’0’’ width, 52’0’’ depth
and max ridge height of 27’ 8’’. The attached type garage fits 2 cars
with front as entry location.
The panel board is divided into two; Power panel with 32 branch
circuit and Lighting panel with 16 branch circuit. The conductor wire for
the power panel is 2- 125 mm2 THWN + 22 mm2 TW (G) @ 63 mm IMC.
Main protection will be a 225 AT, 250 AF, 2P, CB

VII. Conclusion
It is concluded that the designed commercial building unit is a safe
habitable place that can house a large office.
Standards set by the PEC was also observe in making the power
and lighting and layout. Proper wiring was made with accordance to the
minimum standards allow by the code. In line with this, we also establish
a fire protection in the house which ensures the safety of the residents
against fire accidents.
After completing my electrical system design for proposed
commercial building unit, I therefore conclude that as a electrical system
designer it is very important that you know and understood the PEC
codes and standards, it should be considered in making decisions in
electrical design. Using the code and industry standards and advised
from our Professorial guest lecturer Engr. Generoso Restubog, I was
able to design an electrical system for single dwelling family unit.

Recommendation
In designing an electrical system for single family dwelling unit
the designer must know all the clients need to start the design. The
designer must know which electrical devices are available in the local
market. And it is very important to meet at least the minimum
requirements of the Philippine Electrical Code. The designer must always
consider the safety of the client and of the dwelling unit. To lessen the
installation cost of this system design the designer may choose much
cheaper light fixture. It is better if the designer will compute for the
standard illumination for each area in the dwelling units.
