Damped Free vibrations

1. For the vibrating system shown in the figure,


(a) Determine the number of degrees of freedom needed to specify the motion of the system.
(b) Identify a set of generalized coordinates.

2. A block of mass0.0647 kg is suspended from a spring having a stiffness of 50 N/m. The block is
displaced downwards from its equilibrium position through a distance of 2cm and released with
an upward velocity of 3cm/s. Determine
(a) the natural frequency
(b) the period of oscillation
(c) the maximum velocity
(d) the maximum acceleration and
(e) the phase angle.
3. Figure shows a uniform cylinder which rolls without slipping on a horizontal surface and is
constrained by a linear spring. Determine
(a) the differential equation of motion for the system
(b) the natural frequency.

4. Figure shows a bead of mass m suspended on a massless string. The string is subjected to
tension T and this tension does not change throught the motion. Detemine

10. Figure shows a uniform cylinder of radius r and weight W which rolls without slipping on a
cylindrical surface of radius R. Determine
(a) the differentual equation of motion about the equlibrium point B.
(b) the natural frequency of oscillation about the equlibrium point B.
