EXPERIENCE SHARE FOR M/E REVERSING SYSTEMS

After attending troubleshooting or overhauling various reversing systems problems for 2 stroke MAN
B&W Diesel engines, noticed that most of them could be prevented before they occur.

We have prepared below experience share document to refresh your good crew so that at least some of
the incidents can be prevented by a simple check.

In this letter we will just mention how to carry out health check to your reversing cylinders.

You can find separate document with subject; “Attention to be paid for reversing cylinder overhaul” .

HEALTH CHECK OF THE REVERSING AIR CYLINDERS:

There are different ways to check reversing cylinder conditions without dismantling, and we will explain
most comprehensible procedure to prevent confusion.

First of all, we would like to remind key point that, there is not continuous air supply to reversing air
cylinders during maneuvering while command triggered from ECR or W/H.
Once the start order triggered, air will be supplied to reversing cylinders only about 6 seconds. It is not
possible to distinguish probable leakages due to noise during starting.

On the contrary, if command triggered from emergency stand, there is continuous air supply to reversing
cylinders. So, this phenomenon can be used to check the condition of the reversing cylinders. How?

1. Engine to be in stop condition.

2. Confirm control air and safety air open.
3. Close the starting air and block the main starting valve.
4. Disengage the turning gear.
5. Changeover the control position from remote to EMERGENCY, make sure that stop button at
emergency stand is in pushed position.
6. If everything appears to be normal, now there is pressure on the reversing cylinder based on the
position of the ahead-astern arm on the emergency stand.
7. To make sure, loose the air connection one of the reversing cyl air inlet and confirm pressurised air
is available.
8. Now, if your reversing cylinders internal parts are in good condition, there should not be any air
leakage to opposite side of the reversing cylinder. You can confirm this either by removing opposite
side connection or simply checking drain of the pneumatic valve Pos. 10 or 11 depend on ahead
command or astern command.
Since our aim is to locate leakages at the beginning stage, better to remove individual connection
on each cylinder and check if any small leakage started…

9. After confirming no leakage from ahead side, turn engine at least one revolution and confirm all
cylinders are shifted to ahead position. Some crew thoughts all cylinders to be changed their
position once air supplied to cylinders and it cause some confusion.

To change all cylinder’s position, engine to be turned at least one revolution.

10. All above tests to be carry out for astern position as well.

11. We recommend repeat above test at every 6 months.
