Abandoned Identities

Most of the struggles that occur in life come from the decisions we make, but when

growing up as a colored individual or multicultural their are some obstacles that come

with it that we did not ask or decide on.

When filling out a form and stopping at the section where it says “circle which refers to

you?” and having to fill out a specific bubble that does not address who I am as a

person.

Throughout the years hearing people with the same ethnicity as me say I'm “too brown

or too white” for both of the races I state that I am. The color of my skin does not

contribute to what race I am. Having conflict between who I am and what society

believes I am is a constant thought that goes throughout my cluttered mind.

Not being fluent in any dialect except english is a complex statement I have to bring up

when others speak in a different language to me and thinking that I can proceed in

keeping a conversation with them.

The feeling of not knowing where I truly belong is like being inside a grey area and not a

white or black space.

The few individuals that I encounter that are multicultural relate to having a feeling in

“abandoning their cultures” and stick to one because it is easier to explain to others and

to try to forget any negative comments. But it still lingers around like a dream you never

fully achieved and try so hard to figure out the missing pieces in your life that can allow

it to create a brimful story to discuss.

But struggles create a wiser and stronger future, even when there’s a dilemma in life

there will always be growth when all is solved.

Self- love and being able to communicate to others that being multicultural is a

wonderful thing that can turn into a positive aspect in life.

Now in our modern generation there are many activities that contribute in many cultures

and races. Scholarships that allow the latino community and asian- pacific community

and other communities to have the chance to see a successful future and one does not

have to be one race in order to apply.

Resources that allow individuals to feel safe and comfortable is what all should strive for

and entirely can make our society a better place. Love for all cultures and being proud

of each and everything a person is.
