I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, the students in Math 7 must be able to:
• define ‘evaluating algebraic expression’
• evaluate algebraic expression
• solve polynomials by substitution in different operations

Q1. How to evaluate Algebraic Expressions?
A1.
A variable is a letter, for example x, y, and z, that represents an unspecified number. To
evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute a specific value/number for each variable
and perform the arithmetic operations.
Example 1
Evaluate the following expression for x=3 and z=5
6𝑧 + 4𝑥
Substitute the value of x and z, then
6𝑧 + 4𝑥 = 6(𝟓) + 4(𝟑)
perform operation.
6𝑧 + 4𝑥 = 30 + 12 Add.
6𝑧 + 4𝑥 = 𝟒𝟐
Example 2
Evaluate the expression if x=4, y=5, and z=2.
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧
Substitute the value of x, y, and z. In here,
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 𝟒 + 𝟓 − 3(𝟐)
multiply first. Observe PEMDAS Rule.
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 𝟒 + 𝟓 − 6 Add and Subtract.
𝑥 + 𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 𝟑
Example 3
Evaluate the expression if x=2 and y=3.
5𝑥𝑦
5𝑥𝑦 = 𝟑𝟎
Example 4
Evaluate the expression if y=7.
3𝑦 2
Substitute the value of y. Observe PEMDAS
3𝑦 2 = 3(𝟕)2 Rule. Operate first the exponent, that is,
square first the 7.
3𝑦 2 = 3(𝟒𝟗) Multiply 3 and 49.
5𝑥𝑦 = 𝟏𝟒𝟕
Example 5
Evaluate the expression if x=9 and y=6.
𝑥2 − 𝑦2
Substitute the value of x and y. Observe
𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 92 − 62
PEMDAS Rule. Square the two numbers.
𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 81 − 36 Subtact.
𝑥 2 − 𝑦 2 = 𝟒𝟓
Example 6
Evaluate the expression if a=3 and b=4.
3𝑎𝑏
2𝑎 − 4𝑏
3𝑎𝑏 3(3)(4)
= Substitute the value of a and b.
2𝑎 − 4𝑏 2(3) − 4(4)
3𝑎𝑏 36
= Multiply then subtract.
2𝑎 − 4𝑏 6 − 16
3𝑎𝑏 36
=
2𝑎 − 4𝑏 −10
𝟏𝟖
3𝑎𝑏 36 Reduce to lowest term. It becomes −
2𝑎−4𝑏
= − 10 𝟓
𝟑
or −𝟑 𝟓 .
iv. APPLICATION
Evaluate the following Algebraic Expressions
1. 𝑝 + 3𝑞 if 𝑝 = 3 and 𝑞 = 1
2. 𝑎 + 𝑏 + 3𝑑 if 𝑎 = 5, 𝑏 = −1, and 𝑑 = 2
3. 4𝑓𝑔 if 𝑓 = 2, and 𝑔 = 0
4. 2𝑦 3 if 𝑦 = −1
5. 𝑥 3 − 𝑦 2 if 𝑥 = 3, and 𝑦 = 0
3
6. 2𝑎−4𝑏
if 𝑎 = 2, and 𝑏 = 0
4. 5𝑦 2 if 𝑦 = 0
5. 𝑥 − 𝑦 2 if 𝑥 = 0, and 𝑦 = 2
2
6. 2𝑎−4𝑏
if 𝑎 = 2, and 𝑏 = 1
