Workshop/Training
Summer Student Program
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought (BIIT), in
collaboration with the International Institute of Islamic
Thought (IIIT) East and Southeast Asia, organized its Summer
Student program from January 21 to January 25, 2018. This
residential program was designed for graduate students and
exceptional senior undergraduates. It was a meeting place
between young Muslim scholars and prominent academician
so that the young scholars can contribute to Islamic research in
the face of current global challenges. Enlightened and
educated youth with an inclination toward study and research
was the target group for this program. The objectives of the
summer program were to reform thought and knowledge, to
nurture young scholars to be involved in Integration of
Knowledge efforts and to embolden academic networking
among students, scholars and academic institutions.
Mr. M. Azizul Huq, President of BIIT inaugurated the
program. Dr. M. Abdul Aziz, IIIT Bangladesh and Mr.
Shahran Kasim, Deputy Director of IIIT East Asia delivered
their speech in the inaugural session. They clarified the
objectives and goals of the summer program to the
participants. `The following issues were discussed in the
program: Issues and Challenges of the 21st Century:
Perspective of the Ummah; Approaches to the Quran and
Sunnah, History of the Muslims with a Special Reference to

the Emergence of Bangladesh; Issues of Islamic
Economics and Its Relevance to Islami Banks
and Financial Institutions; Islamization of
Knowledge (IOK): The Case of Islamic
Economics; Islamic Perspective on Academic

Past to the Present, Issues in Education from the
Global Perspective; Islamic Epistemology and
Integration of Knowledge and Priorities and
Scopes of Islamic Research: The Case of
Bangladesh and lectures were delivered by the
Prof. Dr. Torla Hassan, Former Deputy Rector,
International Islamic University Malaysia
(IIUM), Dr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan, a fellow of
BIIT, Prof. Dr. Abdullah al-Ahsan, Department
of History and Civilization at Istanbul Sehir
University, Mr. M. Azizul Huq, reputed
economist and the President of BIIT, Prof.
Mohamed Aslam Haneef, Director, Centre for
Islamic Economics, IIUM, Dr. Md. Mahmudul
Hasan, Department of English, IIUM, Prof. Dr.
Rosnani Hashim, Kulliyah of Education

In the concluding session Prof.
Emeritus Dato' Wira Dr. Haji
Jamil bin Haji Osman delivered
his speech on “Youth Leadership
for the Revival of Ummah”. In his
speech Prof Osman shared the
partial experience of youths in the
inculcation of Islamic values in
society and the the session ended
with the vote of thanks by Mr.
Shahran Kasim for the
International Institute of Islamic
Thought (IIIT), East Asia, and Dr.
M. Abdul Aziz on behalf of
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought (BIIT).
Academic Writing and Quality
Publication
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought (BIIT) organized a
workshop on Academic Writing
and Quality Publication in its
conference hall on March 24,
2018.
Three papers were presented in the
workshop. The first presentation
was on titled ‘Academic Writing,
Reviewing and Editing’ by Dr
Maimul Ahsan Khan, Professor of
Law, University of Dhaka and
Senior Academic Fellow of BIIT.

Family: A Primary Institute of
the Ummah’
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Though (BIIT) organized a
seminar in conjunction with
celebrating The International Day
of Families titled ‘Family: A
Primary Institute of the Ummah’ at
its Conference Hall at Uttara on
May 15, 2018. Mir Lutful Kabir
Saadi, Award- winning Science
Journalist, researcher and writer
was present as keynote speaker in
the seminar. Mr. Saadi emphasized
strongly in his key note paper to
build up our family and family life
for better future of Muslim
Ummah.
Mrs. Masuma Begum, another
discussant of this event and the
faculty member of Institute of
Islami Bank Training and Research
Academy (IBTRA) said that we
should form a family forum and
that family problems may be
discussed in this forum for better
solution. She also mentioned that
nowadays divorce rates are
increasing in our society. The chief
guest of the seminar Mr. Shah
Abdul Hannan, former secretary of
Bangladesh Government said that
Islam emphasizes to form a strong
family from its early age and this is
the fundamental teaching for every

Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought (BIIT) organized a
seminar in connection with
celebrating the Hijri New Year
1440 titled ‘HIJRI NEW Year: Its
Significance and Implications’ at
its Conference Hall on September
15, 2018. Professor Md. Rafiqul

the key-note speaker.

Prof. Islam mentioned in his
keynote paper that Hijrah is to be
rendered into practice as a
distinctive Lunar Calendar termed
it as the Islamic calendar in the
world civilizations. He also said
that Hijri year, Muslim life and the
history of Islam are not separate;
they are integrated picture in the
Muslim Ummah and described the
advantages and disadvantages of
Solar Calendar and Lunar Calendar

Interdisciplinary Studies
Study Circle for BIIT Officials
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought (BIIT) organized monthly
interdisciplinary study circle with
the members, fellows and the
officials and staff of BIIT. Eminent
scholar Mr Shah Abdul Hannan,
former secretary of Bangladesh
government and Chairman of BIIT
Trust, moderated the circle. This
study circle meets once or twice in
a Month. The members of the
study circle meet once or twice in a
month.
Qur’an Class for BIIT Officials
Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought (BIIT) organized a Quran
Class during the holy month of
Ramdhan to teach how to read the
holy Qur’an with correct
pronunciation. BIIT officials,
members and fellows participated
in the class. Mr. Md. Ayub
Hossain, adjunct faculty of Islamic
Studies, Bangladesh Islami
University (BIU), Dhaka and
Deputy Registrar of National
University of Bangladesh (NUB),
taught how to translate the holy
Quran into Bangla and Md. Abbas
Uddin, famous Arabic language
trainer taught the holy Quran with

newly invented method learning
The Holy Qur’an with One Word.
This is a new and popular
technique to learn the holy Qur’an
within one month with
Tajweed-i-Qur’an i.e. reading the
divine scripture with right
pronunciation.

Professor Dr. Omar Jah, Vice
Chancellor of Islamic University
of Technology (IUT) and the Guest
of Honor of this event introduced
‘Iqra Epistemology’ in his
esteemed speech. Dr. Jah said that
it has two dimensions,: a) Vertical
i.e. spirituality and b) Horizontal
i.e. to spread and maintain the
teachings of Islam. With practical
and Qur’anic examples he
established his argument. He also
informed that the aim of education
at the beginning was to prepare
‘Murabbi’- a role model. But now
‘Iqra epistemology’ has been
changed to ‘Epistemology of
Mizania’ i.e. secularized by the
Western influences. Appraising the
earlier presentation he added that
we have to change our mentality
regarding vocational education and
also emphasized on monologue
rather than dialogue.

2018. In connection with his visit,
BIIT organized a view-exchange

the meeting.
The senior officials of BIIT
introduced the participants with the
honorable guest and made a brief
summary of the aims, objectives,
mission-vision and different
programs of the institute. Dr Md.
Abdul Awal Khan invited the
honorable guest to deliver his
speech about the present activities
of Non-Governmental
Organizations in Bangladesh and
the functions of NGO Affairs
Bureau. Mr Hossain briefed about
the functions and activities of the
bureau and expressed his
satisfaction regarding the present
activities of BIIT. He also
expressed his keen interest to
cooperate and provide all types of
support for its future programs.

with the Islamic Centre, Munich.

Bangladesh and Global studies.

Dr M Abdul Aziz, Executive
Director of Bangladesh Institute of
Islamic Thought (BIIT) and the
country representative of IIIT,
USA visited Islamic University of
Technology (IUT) on September
19, 2018 in his office and met with
Prof Dr Omar Jah, Vice Chancellor
of Islamic University of
Technology (IUT).
Dr. Mwebesa Umar, Registrar of
Islamic University of Technology,
Prof Dr Md Nurul Absar
Chowdhury, Dean of Faculty of
Engineering and Technology of
IUT and Md Mahfuzar Rahman,
Senior Assistant Director of BIIT
attended this meeting. In this
meeting, Dr M Abdul Aziz and
Prof Dr Omar Jah briefed about

their institute and finally both of
them were agreed to form a
technical committee to identify the
areas of collaboration between IIIT
and IUT by provision of necessary
supports and resources in order to
improve the quality of education in
general and training and research
in particular as the Mission and
Vision of the Institutes are the
same. After a discussion, token of
appreciation (gift boxes) were
exchanged.
The USA & Malaysian
Ambassadors to Bangladesh
Dr. M. Abdul Aziz, Executive
Director of Bangladesh Institute of
Islamic Thought (BIIT) met with
H. E. Marcia Stephens Bloom
Bernicat, the USA Ambassador to
Bangladesh and H. E. Nur Ashikin
Mohd. Taib, the High
Commissioner of Malaysia to
Bangladesh on October 15, 2018 at
Dhaka. Mr. Mir Lutful Kabir Saadi
and Prof. M. Azizur Rahman,
honorable Fellow Member of BIIT
were also present this meeting.

Annual General Meeting, 2018
The Annual General Meeting
(AGM) for 2017 of Bangladesh
Institute of Islamic Thought (BIIT)
took place at its Conference Hall
on June 30, 2018 at Uttara.
Distinguished Life and General
Members of BIIT were present in
the meeting. Mr. M. Azizul Huq,
President of Executive Committee
of BIIT inaugurated the AGM with
his speech. Mr. Shah Abdul
Hannan, Founding Chairman of
BIIT Trust, eminent Islamic
scholar and former secretary of
Bangladesh Government, was
present as the Chief Guest at the
AGM. Dr. M. Abdul Aziz,
Executive Director of BIIT,
presided over the meeting.
Annual Activities Report of the
year 2017 of BIIT and Annual Plan
& Budget 2018 were presented in
the meeting by Dr. M. Abdul Aziz,
Executive Director of BIIT. Mr.
M. A. Rashid Khan, Treasurer of
Khaja Yunus Ali University and
Vice President (Admin & Finance)
of BIIT presented Annual
Financial Statements and
Auditor’s Report 2017. The
delegates of the meeting took part
in the discussion session on the
presented reports and finally all the
reports were approved. Amending
the Constitution of BIIT was
another agenda in this annual
meeting. The amendment proposal
of the constitution was discussed
elaborately in the house and finally
was approved.
In the AGM, the authority of BIIT
honored three fellow members for
their individual efforts in
promoting the publications of BIIT
and IIIT during the year 2017. The
AGM was ended with the
concluding speech of Mr. M.
Azizul Huq, President of the
Executive Committee of BIIT and
renowned Islamic banking
consultant.
IIIT Global Meeting in Turkey
Dr. M. Abdul Aziz, Executive
Director of BIIT and
Representative of IIIT Bangladesh
participated in the global meeting
of International Institute of Islamic
Thought (IIIT) in Turkey.
Representatives of the overseas
offices of IIIT and the affiliate and
partner organizations also attended
in the meeting. Dr. Aziz presented
a Power Point presentation
regarding the aims, objectives and
present activities of BIIT.
Participation to the
International Conference
Workshop in Thailand
Dr. M. Abdul Aziz, Executive
Director of BIIT and representative
of IIIT Bangladesh attended a
workshop titled ‘Consultation on
Transformation of Governance’
from August 19 to 20, 2018 at
International Institute of Peace and
Development Studies (IIPDS),
Bangkok, Thailand. In the
workshop Dr. Aziz presented a
paper titled Hudaibia Pack: First
Peace Treaty of Human History.

International Conference in
Dhaka
Dr. M. Abdul Aziz, Executive
Director of BIIT and representative
of IIIT Bangladesh attended an
international conference titled
Ethics & Morality for Sustainable
Development which was organized
by Asian University of
Bangladesh. In the conference Dr.
Aziz chaired a session and
delivered his valuable speech
regarding ethics, morality and
education.
Other Activities of BIIT
Prof. Ataul Huq’s Corner at
BIIT Library
Prof. Ataul Huq’s Corner was
introduced at the Library and
Resource Center of BIIT
(Bangladesh Institute of Islamic
Thought) on January 05, 2018. In
the corner, Prof. Huq donated one
hundred nineteen world famous
books on Economics and other
disciplines and twenty three peer
reviewed international journals.
