RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

“R&D IS HEART OF SEED INDUSTRY”.

➢ Research and Development of new hybrids and verities is the back bone for sustenance of
any seed company.
➢ Strong Research and Development requires intelligent leadership.

SEED PROCESSING:

The company has established a modern seed processing plant and other state of art facilities to
achieve high standards of physical purity for which the company is accredited with ISO 9001-
2008 certificate.

The processing plant is ISO 9001- 2008 certified and use State of art Technology and
Equipment at all stages of processing to ensure high quality (Physical and Genetic purity and
viability) and maintain the seed with optimum moisture level during storage.

Seed processing include drying, cleaning and sorting (grading and gravity separators) of seed.
Treat the seed with insecticides and fungicides. At the same time the seed is subject to physical
and genetic purity, germination tests and moisture content. After receiving satisfactory pass
results on various tests, the lots of seed are permitted to pack in suitable containers and sent to
disturbers for marketing.

DEVELOPMENT OF DOLICHOS VARIETIES

Ganesh and pavan are two varieties which are developed from local chikkudu and yebbala vare by

back cross method at nri agritech R&D. NIDUMUKKALA, GUNTUR.

➢ This colour text indicates the desirable charecteristics which have to be combined in
new developing varieties.
Brief summery about developing dolichos varieties:
➢ Ganesh and pavan are the new developed varieties from the above existing varieties
by back cross method.
➢ Local chikkudu is used as recessive female parent and Karnataka variety is used as
dominant male parent.
➢ The desirable charecters are: photo insensitive in nature
Good pod quality
Bushy type stem
Main stem bearing.
➢ After crossing the varieties obtained f1 with charecters of photo insensitive, bushy
type and local pod. Then f1 was selfed, f2 was obtained.
➢ F2 were 3:1 ratio of bushy: creeper respectively. F2 was backcrossed with recessive
female parent.

➢ In f3 generation 4 types of genotypes were obtained:

✓ Tailing, photo insensitive

✓ Tailing, photo sensitive
✓ Bushy, photo insensitive
✓ Bushy, photo sensitive.

16 | P a g e
➢ In f4 generation the selection was carried and tested in replicated yield trail and released

varities as GANESH (RED SEEDED) AND PAVAN (WHITE SEEDED).

DEVELOPMENT OF BLACK GRAM VARIETIES

▪ Black gram is very important grain legume crop grown in andra Pradesh. In andra Pradesh
Guntur district ranks 1st for the production of black gram.
▪ The area and productivity of black gram declined in andra pradesh due to yellow mosaic
virus (YMV)disease.
▪ Development of YMV resistant varieties is prime importance for stabilizing the yield levels.
▪ The study was carried out at disease screening fields established at R&D farm, NRI
AGRITECH.2014.
▪ for development of YMV resistant varieties NRI AGRITECH used the varieties LBG(LAM
BLACK GRAM)402, LBG645 & LBG685 as female parents(susceptible varieties) and
PU(PANT URD)31 as a male parent (resistant varieties).

❖ YMV resistance is complementary gene action. In f2 generation the genes are segregated in
9:7 ratio(complementary gene action).
❖ In f3 generation 3 types of gene actions are observed i.e. true bred lines, resistsnce lines and
susceptible lines.

17 | P a g e
❖ The susceptible lines are eliminated and roug out and resistant lines are selected and
evaluated for screening of developed varieties and conducted the replicated yield trail.
❖ After the replicated yield trail the developed varieties are named as SRI(LBG402 * PU31),
MARUTI(LBG685 * PU31) and NANDI(LBG645 *PU31).

Observations

As industrial attachment was done in NRI AGRITECH PVT.LTD. it is seed industry which consists
of different units which are R&D, seed production, seed processing and marketing. observed many
things and learnt new techniqes in plant breeding.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT:

Nursery Management:

❖ Nursery preparation for different crops like tomato, brinjal, marigold, cabbage, chillies and
nursery beds were prepared separately for parental lines, f1 lines, test progeny, true bred
lines etc.
❖ All nursery beds are raised beds because the raised beds are most suitable for growth of
vegetable and flower crops.
❖ sowing of chilli, tomato, brinjal, marigold, cabbage seeds on prepared nursery beds.

Dolichos seed sowing for germination test:

❖ seed sampling was done (100 seeds are counted and prepared for sowing).
❖ Two types of seeds are sowned for testing germination in dolichos(pavan):
1. normal seed (without any chemical treatment)
2. treated seed (thiram +thiomethoxam)
❖ 62 lines are sowned with normal seeds and 62 lines are sowned with treated seeds, after 6-8
days observed normal seeds are germinated more.
➢ Male lines (r line) in maize was sowned for maintaining the hybrid seed production.

Chilli transplanting:

➢ Nursery was prepared for chillies and managed upto 14-16 days.
➢ Nursery was prepared for different lines like parental lines, tester lines, newly developed
varieties and tagged each and every line.
➢ Basal application of DAP in main field before transplanting the chillies and transplanting in
main field.

21 | P a g e
Field observation:

➢ dolichos was sowned for germination test

➢ grow out test (GOT) in chilli
➢ Yellow vein mosaic virus resistant screening in okra crop
➢ Yellow mosaic virus resistant screening in black gram and green gram
➢ Selection of superior individuals plants in black gram (f4 generation)
➢ Crossing and pollination in cowpea and maize

➢ Emasculation in okra was done in evening time (4pm) and pollination was done next
morning (9:30 am).
➢ Tagging was carried in cotton field for easy identification of different lines.

Seed processing unit:

➢ seed sampling was done for examine the germination percentation, physical purity, viability
etc. in black gram and green gram.
➢ Observed many equipments/machinaries, their mechanisms and processing layout for seed
processing. CROSSING OKRA

22 | P a g e
SUGGESTIONS:

➢ Infrastructure is small and organization needs to be improved.

➢ Marketing structures are small
➢ Nri agritech concerning about pulses and vegetable crops.
➢ If it is better proper structural facilities would there.
➢ Seed production unit need improvement in structural facilities.
➢ Proper polyhose should be there for the cultivating the vegetable crops.
➢ Nri agritech not using the bio control agents for managing the pest and disease in reaserch
fields and following the conventional methods.
➢ Nri agritech appling the pedigree and back cross methods for developing the new varities so
the pedigree and backcross metods are time consuming methods.
➢ Proper laboratory should be there for research and development.
➢ Drip irrigation is not following in Nri agritech for irrigating the research fields.
