Queen Maria

She was the daughter of Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke of Edinburgh (second son
of Queen Victoria of Great Britain) and Maria Alexandrovna (daughter of Tsar Alexander II). He was
born in a time when England knew its apogee developments in the political-economic and cultural. Its
personality has proven to be a successful combination of oriental and citizenship Western dowry. On
29 December 1892 he married the heir to the Romanian Crown Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern-
Sigmaringen. Marriage ceremony was at Sigmaringen, after the two rites, Catholic and Anglican. A
few months later (4 February 1893) were installed in Romania.
The time before the death of King Charles It has been dominated by tensions, mainly due to
inadequacies of the liberal views of the new princess and authoritarian style of government of the first
king of Romania. Crown Prince and his wife have lived under authoritarian tutelage of King Charles I,
not indulged in any act of independence, even in private life. However, two lives are conducted in a
pleasant atmosphere. For the young family was reserved Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, and Carol
built specially for them in the complex Pelişor royal castle in Sinaia. Ferdinand and Maria will have
six children: Carol (1893), Elizabeth (1894), Marioara (1900), Nicholas (1903), Ileana (1909) and
Mircea (1913), which will die after only four years of typhoid fever.
Carol's authority has caused the young princes to seek escape from the daily banal
places. Thus, Ferdinand refuge in military headquarters that it had under management, and Mary is
distinguished by high profile extramarital affair. Since 1907, the princess began to cultivate close
relations with Barbu Stirbey Crown domain administrator. It was a typical English held, which
reminded Mary of the home. It also was his brother John Bratianu, and at that time talked about the
partnership between the three that Mary participated in the country's political games.
She became queen in a critical moment of national history, the onset of the First World War, the
political circles dilemma was obvious. Queen Mary will support the policy of Ferdinand, seeking
diplomatic solutions viable in times of crisis.
King Charles I disappearance from the political scene allowed the new queens to resume old
ties deriving from his birth status. Thus, he met with French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau,
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson (11 April 1919, Paris), visited Britain several times. In this context,
he said that Romania needs to be able to fulfill its objectives, the recognition by the Great Powers at
the peace negotiation table its war efforts. "If we are doomed to die - she said - at least our allies to
know that I died like fools, but as conscious heroes, knowing that I was sold and betrayed ...".
Regarding the conduct of World War I, Queen Mary was actively involved in providing care
to the wounded on the front, left behind widows and infirm. Such practices were continued during the
Elizabethan state war for independence. Unlike its predecessor, the new first lady was mixed in
Romanian political life, thanks to his strong personality to assert itself in the succeeding her husband.
Representative of the second generation of elite female Romanian, Queen Mary was influenced both
by the model imposed by Queen Victoria in internal affairs, but also reminiscent of Russian daily
management.
Her husband's death (1927) has not prevented her to reaffirm interest in domestic and
international developments. Tion in Romania found that (abandoning primacy amid Regency Crown
Prince Carol of Romania Crown) allowed access to monitor political act, especially by means of
regency. After the return home of Charles and his involvement in the destruction of political parties
and other institutions guaranteeing democracy and pluralism, the influence of Queen's clearly marked
by regression. Isolation of the political life of a deeply unhappy, which is why he left the capital,
retreating from Balchik and the Bran Castle.
Queen Mary sought through cultural patronage to continue the tradition begun by Queen
Elizabeth, supporting young talented or dedicated to various personalities, found themselves in
financial deficit. He built a palace at Balchik and coquettish Byzantine church, Stella Maris, who held
up the handover of the Quadrilateral heart. The best known of his writings, Story of My Life (1934),
recorded its course thoroughly autobiographical. Among other literary productions may be mentioned:
The book of fairy tales of the Queen Mary (1923), before and after the war (1925), Stella Maris
(1933). From 1 May 1915 he became honorary member of the Romanian Academy. Admired at the
time, appear in the pages of newspapers, the Queen Mary has used her own charisma to serving the
