Introduction

Work Immersion is one of the course requirements for graduation. A Senior High School
student has to undergo work immersion in a business organization/establishment whose work
requirements are related to the specialization. Through this work immersion, the students are
exposed to and become familiarized with work related environment related to their field of
specialization. “Work immersion is a key feature in the senior high school curriculum. It can be
conducted in different ways depending on the purposes and needs of learners.” Education
Secretary Leonor Briones said. The guidelines said work immersion – which can range from 80
to 120 hours – will enable students to become familiar with the workplace, experience workplace
simulation and apply their competencies in area of specialization.
“Work immersion will help develop among learner, life and career skills, and will
prepare them to make decision on postsecondary education or employment,” the guidelines read.
“Through partnership building, DepEd hopes that partner institutions will provide learners with
work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on experience, and additional learning
resources,” it added. The agency said schools may partner with recognized institution or
organizations to come up with agreements on work immersion for students. As the students are
still minors, DepEd said work immersion requires parental consent.
President Aquino, the different government institutions involved in education, and
Congress had since made K to 12 a reality rather than a mere ideal.
As I looked over the paradigm created by the steering committee of K to 12 reform
programs, however, I suddenly realized that we had overlooked a major gap in the system.
The curriculum has been reengineered from pre-school to tertiary general education. It is
now seamless, without disruptions caused previously by trifocal and bureaucratic structures. We
have firmly agreed on what students should know and be able to do after 12 years of basic
education or more (if they go to college)
What is missing is a clear idea of what the term “Immersion” implies.
In the approved latest draft of the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum, students that
choose to take the Academic strand are expected to spend 120 hours outside campus, doing
“Immersion.” Our country has had a lot of experience with on-the-job training (OJT) programs
on the collegiate level. Unfortunately, many (if not most) college OJT students are assigned only
to insignificant jobs in a company (answering the phone, making photocopies, making coffee-
that sort of thing). Rarely are OJT students expected to produce the same products that regular
employees produce.
10

There are sterling exception, of course, one of which is the journalism college that I head,
where OJT students, like our own students, write news items in a newspaper just like regular
reporters. (Excuse me for mentioning that, why not?) Immersion in SHS will be useless if it is
patterned after most of the OJT experiences currently being undertaken by college students.
In order to make Immersion meaningful and useful, we need to get the companies and not
just the schools-aware of the educational objectives and processes of K to 12. The human
resources departments of the companies have to know what it means to handle inexperienced
adolescents (still with no work ethic but with raging hormones), how to make them without pay
what adults employees are doing for pay, what the design of the curriculum is (Understanding By
Design, remember?), what the role of Immersion is in the whole process of lifelong learning, and
so on. That means training for staff in companies. That means expertise and funds.
“DepEd, in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders, shall ensure that all schools
and venues for learning are conductive to the education and safety of the learners. The safety of
learners is primary,” it added.
“Consequently, the maximum number of hours spent in the work immersion venue is 40
hours per week and no more than eight hours per day as provided by law,” the agency said.
DepEd stressed that work immersion should not be reduced as a mere recruitment tool for a
partner institution, saying that the students should also gain skill that will enable them to qualify
for other job options.
“Schools and students should not be asked to pay the senior high school partner
institution for any work immersion activity conducted. Fees for work immersion must only be set
after consultation with parents,” added the guidelines.
11

The program aims to develop in students the knowledge and skills that contextualize their
specialization exit outcomes and provide students relevant learning experience by giving them
the exposure to the actual workplace setting (jca.2017)
One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the
competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/ or joining the
world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s
development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject, has been incorporated into the
curriculum. This subject will provide learners with opportunities:
1. To become familiar with the work place;
2. For employment simulation; and
3. To apply their competencies in area of specialization/ applied subject in authentic work
environment.
To achieve the above objects, Work Immersion is thus a requirement for graduation from
secondary education. Learners are immersed in actual work environments such as workshops
offices and laboratories in which their prior training is relevant.
Work immersion will help develop among the leader’s life and career skills, and will
prepare them to make decisions on postsecondary education or employment. Through
partnership building, DepEd hopes that the Partner Institution will provide learners with work
immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on experience, and additional learning resources. It
aims to make the learners:
1. Appreciate the importance and application of the principle and theories learned in
school;
2. Enhance their technical knowledge and skills;
3. Enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and
4. Develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation and respect for work.
By the time learners reach Senior High School, they would have already acquired almost
all the competencies and skills that would prepare them for the curriculum exits (higher
education, employment, middle-skills development, and entrepreneurship). Work immersion
provides them with an avenue to test themselves and apply what they have learned in a non-
school scenario. In work immersion, learners are not only able to apply their previous training
but are also able to experience the social interaction in a work environment. Their experiences
during work immersion will develop many skills and values that could help them as they
12

transition from high school to real life. To assure the achievements of the above objective of
work immersion, this policy serves to guide schools in:
1. Creating flexible work immersion arrangements for their learners;
2. Providing options for work immersion that are relevant to learner’s purposes and
needs;
3. Organizing work immersion opportunity for learners that are consistent with the
diverse human resource requirements of partners institution for work immersion;
and
4. Articulated the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic
education when building relationship with work immersion partners.

Values and Attributes of the Students

in a Work Immersion
Students/trainees should be characterized by the following values and attributes in their
respective workplace:

ADAPTABLE
Change is inevitable, especially when it comes to business. Organizations often need to
offer new products or ideas to keep them marketable. Because of this trend, they need employees
who can easily adapt to change, someone who can keep abreast with the current trends.

DEPENDABLE
Superiors are eyeing for someone whom they can rely on, a person to whom they can
delegate responsibilities, thus making sure that the operations in the office are carried out
properly even in their absence. In fact, in a survey conducted, it was revealed that dependability
is the best qualification that employers are looking for in an employee.

GOOD COMMUNICATORS
Employers will look for someone who can express themselves clearly both in written and
oral communication. Proper communication skills will lessen common company problems in the
13

workplace like miscommunication and misunderstanding among employees or between a

superior and his subordinate.

HARDWORKING
Hardworking employees are partners of an organization in reaching its goals. They are
“army” that keeps the company moving forward an employee.

HONEST
Talented employees are assets to the company. However, companies give more weight to
honesty and integrity more than anything else. Honesty comes in different forms: honesty in
declaring entries in the daily time record: honesty in the use of office supplies: honesty in
performing task although when the superiors are not around, and many more.

ORGANIZED
Part the work is any establishment is to keep records and data at hand, task, they are
looking for someone who is organized some who can easily locate files and can present data.

PASSIONATE
A person who loves what he is doing is positive, enthusiastic in carrying out his task, and
seldom gets tried or experiences burnout, companies need these type of employees, those who
keep on doing their work with excellence because they are passionate about it.

PROFESSIONAL/ETHICAL
Rules are set in the office to make sure that not only work is carried out properly but the
harmonious relationship among employees are also maintained. Employees would want someone
who follows company polices and exudes professionalism, thus serving as a good example to
others.

PUNCTUAL
Time is very important in the workplace. Every second counts. Employers look for
someone who values time because they relate punctuality to productivity is equated to success. A
punctual employee reports to work on time, submits reports even prior to the deadline, and
accomplishes things within the given schedule.
14

TEAM PLAYER
Most companies work in team. Goals are achieved by team effort. An employer will look
for someone who can work in a team and can encourage team members to achieve their goal.

Recommendations and Suggestions

Personally, I think this work immersion will be productive if the time duration will be pro
long. Such as changing the schedule instead of 15 days make it 1 month so that the knowledge
will be effectively impart having enough time to experience it. And the Central Drug
Rehabilitation Center may might conduct a survey to know and give action to those specific

JOURNAL

DAY 1
At exactly 9:00 am, we went to the AVR to attend a small group discussion about the
do’s and don’ts in the center. We were brought to our places and were introduced to the
volunteers as well as to the patients. We were also introduced to the place where we have shared
table for our meals. We were toured around the whole place in order to get familiarised. By night
time, we have been asked to sleep at exactly 7:00 pm so we can have enough sleep for
tomorrow’s activity.
REFLECTION
I have learned on this day the rules and regulation of this rehabilitation center. I know
some of people is very strict regarding of the rules and regulation.

DAY 2
We have done somuch in this day In 5:00am morning we go to face one court to do an
exercise and also zumba after that we go to AVR to eat breakfast. After that We back to our
dorm to take rest. In 9:00 am in the morning we have an orientation before we proceed in Dorm
Magalang Maa’m Kaye Santos discussed our activity and after her discussed we proceed in room
of the patient. Well the patient open their concerns to their psychosocial. and after they show to
us their talents and also we share our talent to the patients then after that. one of the patient tell
or sharing their life experience afterwards we proceed again to AVR to eat our lunch and after
we eat we back in our dorm to rest around 1:30 pm we back in Dorm Magalang to do our activity
or Group Dynamics
REFLECTION
I realized today that not all the patients are bad they just want to correct their self for their
family and they want to find the way back to God.

DAY 3
In 5:00 am in the morning we go to the face one quadrangle to do some physical
activities like zumba and military basic exercise and afterwards we proceed to AVR to eat our
41

breakfas after we eat we back in dorm for taking a bath and rest after that we proceed to AVR for
discussion about social case study report format after that we take our lunch after lunch we back
to our dorm to take rest. Around 2:00 pm we meet our client\patient that assigned to us. Thenack
to our dorm to take a rest. Around 4:30 pm after that we go AVR to eat our dinner then after that
we go back to our dorm to take a sleep
REFLECTION
After I meet my patient and others patient here in rehab I realize that many of them are
not be visited by their family like my patient. He fateels that he was alone be when we arrive in
the rehabilitation he said that he think that his days with us wa be memorable. Then when I hear
that I feel that us the immersion student are like a hero because we save them in boring
momments

DAY 4
Again we woke up 5:00 am in the morning we go to face one quadrangle to do zumba
and some military exercise then afterward we go to AVR to eat our breakfast then afterwards we
back in dorm for take a rest and bath after that we proceed to Dorm Magalang for the morning
activity that we entitled “the new me”after that we proceed again to AVR to eat our lunch
afterward we go back to our dorm to take a rest. Around 2:00 pm we go again to doom Magalang
for the Group Dynamics but it was cancelled. Then we just go to dorm G9 bravo to talk with our
patients, that last for almost three hours after the story sharing with our patients we decide to go
back in our dorm. Then afterward we go to AVR to eat our dinner then after we eat we go back
to our dorm to sleep
REFLECTION
I learned for this day that it was nice to interact with the people here in rehabilitation
because they are more true to their self than the people outside I am happy to in this rehab
because I have so many story and experience to hear

DAY 5
As usual we woke up 5:00 am in the morning then go to face one quadrangle to do our
daily routine witch is zumbaand some military exercise after that we go to AVR to eat our
breakfast then afterward we go to our dorm to take a rest then afterwads we go to dorm magalang
to conduct an activity for them witch entitled “overcoming my weaknesses” then after the
activity we go to AVR to eat our luch then afterward we go back to our dorm to rest the after
ward we go to dorm magalang to just observe the behaviour of the patients because our
psychosocial are not around. Then afterwards we go to our dorm to rest then at exactly 5:00pm
we go to AVR to eat our dinner then after wards we go back to our dorm to sleep
42

REFLECTION
After I hear the one of the weakness of some patients witch is drugs I feel that I cant blame
them because they become weak to avoid the temptation to take drugs. Then there is a line that
they repeating to say to us that is even in your dreams don’t attempt to take drugs. I am thankful
for their advice that strikes my heart because of them I said to myself that I will never ever think
to take drugs

DAY 6
As always we woke us 5:00 am in the morning to play basketball than at exactly 8:00am
we go to face one quadrangle to attend our first flag ceremony with sir lito sir teope and the
volunteer with the patients. Then after that we go to AVR to eat our breakfast then afterwards we
go to dorm magalang but we didn’t do anything we observe the patients that creating a portrait
because our schedule is on afternoon. after the observation we go to AVR to eat our lunch. Then
we go back to our dorm to rest. Then at exactly 1:00pm we go to dorm magalang to conduct the
activity then after we done the activity we saw the patients playing basketball. Then they saw us
then they call us to play with them. Because we want to take the trust of the patients we play
with them even though we are tired. After we play we go to AVR to eat our dinner. Then we go
back to our dorm to sleep
REFLECTION
I saw on this daythat some patients of dorm magalang was not much interested on our
activity. Then I realize on this day that all people will judge you by your first impression but
there is a chance to prove your self to them

DAY 7
Today I think is the most tired day so far because after the zumba and military exercise
we jog with sir teope two times in face one and face two. After that we go to AVR to eat our
breakfast then we go back to our dorm to rest then after that we go to dorm magalang to listen in
the concerns of the patients then after we listen to them we go to AVR to eat our lunch. Then
after wards we go back to our dorm to rest then after that we go to dorm G9 bravo to talk again
to our patients then to get some important information to finish my social case study report. And
after couple of story we go back to our dorm to take a rest then afterwards we go to AVR to eat
our dinner then afterwards we go back to our dorm to take a sleep
REFLECTIONem
I realize today that if you judge a person by its fast. Its like reading a book that your eyes
its on blindfold. My point is don’t judge a person like the patients in this rehabilitation. Don’t
judge them if you don’t know who they are. If you don’t know the person you judge is the
43

lawyer that defence you in court or it the doctor that saves your life. Or a teacher that teach your
child in right no one knows
DAY8
as usual we woke up 5:00am in morning to do our daily routine witch is zumba and some
military exercise then after that we go to AVR to eat our breakfast then afterwards we go to our
dorm to prepare for our meeting with the magalang patients but ma am Catherine kaye santos say
that we can just play billiard because our schedule is in afternoon. after we play we go to AVR to
eat our lunch then afterwards we go back to our dorm to take a rest then after we rest ke go to
dorm magalang to conduct the activity entitled “blue print of my life” then after we done the
activity we go back to our dorm to take a rest then afterwards we go to AVR to eat our dinner.
Then after that we go back to dorm to sleep
REFLECTION
I realize that even they are in rehabilitation they have a plan of their life when they finish
the six months of rehabilitating their self.

DAY 9
As usual we woke up at 5:00pm in the morning to do our daily exercise after that we go
to AVR to eat our breakfast witch is always hotdog and egg and after that we go back to our
dorm to take a rest then after that we go to dorm magalang to conduct an activity after that we go
to AVR to eat our lunch then afterwards we go to our dorm to take a rest then afterwards we go
to dorm G9 BRAVO to talk with our patients and after almost three hours of talking we go back
to our dorm to prepare to go in AVR to eat our dinner then after ward we go back to our dorm to
sleep

REFLECTION
Even you tired and lack of sleep you need to push your self to finish what you ned to
finish like what we are doing now. For Tha family!

DAY 10
In morning we didn’t do anything we didn’t attend the morning exercise because sir lito
and other staff. That we have only five hours of sleep everyday just to finish our social case
study anyways in morning we play basketball because it’s the only way to enjoy our time
afterwards we go to AVR to eat our breakfast then afterwards we go to our dorm to rest. then
afterwards we go to dorm magalang to play billiard because our schedule is on afternoon after
that we go to AVR to eat our lunch then afterward we go to our dorm to take a rest then
44

afterwards we go to dorm magalang to conduct an activity after that we go back to our dorm.
Afterwards we go to AVR to eat our dinner then we go back to dorm then we sleep
REFLECTION
Even my time is hectic I have to think about what I have to day and breaking it into piece
comes to my mind that my sacrifice is worth it when I finish my study

DAY 11
To day is the happiest day in my stay in the CLDRC because in morning as usual we to
the AVR to eat our breakfast then afterwards we go back to our dorm to take a rest then
afterwards we go to dorm magalang to set up an boodle fight for them then after the boodle fight
we go to our dorm to rest then afterwards we go to our dorm to take a rest then afterwards we go
to dorm magalang to conduct an activity after the activity the patients saw us and they called us
after we play with them sir teope called us to eat our dinner. Then after we eat we go back to our
dorm to sleep.
REFLECTION
I realize that on this day that not all happiness you only can get
On the people you close but to day I prove that I am wrong because I found happiness with the
person that I m not expected.

DAY 12
On this day we didn’t do anything on morning we just go to magalang to listen to their
pull -ups and issues of the patients and on this day we encounter for the first time the patient who
try to escape the rehab because after in magalang we go to AVR to eat our lunch then aftter that
we go back to dorm to take a rest then after wards we go to dorm magalang to observe them in
their prayer meeting then afterwards we go back to our dorm to take a rest then afterwards we go
back to our dorm to prepare for dinner. Then after couple of minutes sir rommel called us to go
in AVR then after that we go back to dorm to sleep
REFLECTION
Sometimes people say negative about you but always you need to take it as a positive
because it’s the only way to learned how will you improve your self

DAY 13
45

Today we didn’t do the morning exercise because we clean our dorm after that we go to
AVR to eat our breakfast the n after that we go to our dorm to prepare to go in dorm G9 bravo to
inspect the supplies of the patients and we confiscate the letter of the patients to their girlfriend
and family after the inspection we go to AVR to eat our lunch then after that we go back again to
our dorm to sleep for awhile then after that we go back again to G9bravo with ma am kaye
santos then after couple of hours we go back to our dorm to rest then after that we go to AVR to
eat our dinner and then we go back to our dorm to sleep
REFLECTION
I realize today that its hard to me to leave this place /environment because the patients
attach to us so much but it’s part of life some people will go to your life then they will go out
immediately because God want you to realize you need to maximize your time until you have a
chance to use it

DAY 14

Today we join the daily exercise in face two court. after that we go to AVR to eat
our breakfast. afterwards we go to our dorm to rest. then afterwards we go to dorm magalang to
watch one of the patients draw a portrait. Then after that we go to AVR to eat boodle fight style
that conducted by sir teope. After that we go back to our dorm. To rest then we came back to
dorm magalang for the last bonding with them. We share our experience it each other after that
we go to AVR to eat our dinner. Then after sir teope conduct a games that we enjoy. Then after
the games we go to bed to sleep.

REFLECTION
I knew that our patients they see us like a hero because they said that we save
them from boring days . I feel like that I inspired people to do more. And we become a model
for them

DAY15

this is the last day of our immersion in morning we done the daily exercise with
the magilas and G9bravo after the exercise we eat our breakfast in our dorm. then after that we
play basketball for the last time then afterwards sir Rommel called us to help him to help him to
set up the another boodle fight with our psychosocial then after that we came back again to dorm
to take a rest again until Ma am felinor abellanoza arrive with ma am arcelli maniego and some
faculty staff. After that we go to AVR to receive the fruit of our sacrifice we receive the
certificate but we

REFLECTTION
Today I realize that 15 days was not enough the 15 days of joy and sacrifice is already
46

done. But also I realize that 15 days we build a srong family a family that I will never forget
forever thank you to all of you CLDRC Family!
