Real Numbers
Real numbers include all the numbers that were studied from the basic education. Whole
numbers, fractions, decimals and integers, etc. are encountered.
The set of real numbers is an infinite set meaning there are infinitely many numbers included in
the set of real numbers. The set of real numbers is composed of two major subsets, the rational and
irrational number.
One characteristic of real numbers is that they can be represented by points on a number line.
Every real number has a corresponding point on the number line. On the number line, there is always
a real number between two other real numbers. The numbers increase from left to right.

Subsets of a Real Number

 Natural Numbers (N)
Natural numbers are also known as “Counting” numbers. These are represented by the symbol
N.
Example: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5,…}

 Whole Numbers (W)

Whole numbers consist of the Natural numbers including 0. These are the numbers that were
studied in elementary mathematics.
Example: {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,…}

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 7 / FIRST QUARTER / REAL NUMBERS: SUBSET AND ARRANGEMENT PAGE 4
 Integers (Z)
Integers is a set of infinite real numbers which is made up of the natural numbers or the positive
integers, their opposite the negative integers and 0. They are called the signed numbers.
Examples: {-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4}
Positive integers: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
Negative integers: {-1, -2, -3, -4, -5}
Neither positive nor negative: {0}

 Rational Numbers (Q)

Rational numbers Q are numbers that can be written in the form of a ratio of two integers, a
and b, where b≠ 0.
Rational numbers consist of the Natural Numbers, Whole Numbers, Integers, Fractions together
with Terminating and Repeating Decimals.
1 3 8 4 8 9
Examples of fractions are the following: Proper fractions 2 , 5 , − 11, Improper fractions − 3 , 5 , 9
1 4
and Mixed Numbers 1 3 , 3 7.
When fractions are divided, the answer is expressed in decimal form. Examples of decimals are
the following: 1.25, 1.08, 4.89, 18.5, 9.071.
Decimals are considered a rational number if they are terminating and repeating and
irrational if it is non-terminating or it simply does not end.

 Irrational Numbers
Represented by Q`, these are the numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two
integers. Examples of these numbers are square roots of imperfect squares like √2 and 𝜋. They are
called irrational numbers because there are no two integers that can be used to express their exact
value in ratio form.

Facts about Real Numbers

1. There is no smallest or largest integer.
2. The largest negative integer is -1.
3. The smallest positive integer is 1.
4. Every negative integer is less than zero.
5. Every positive integer is greater than zero.
6. Zero is neither positive nor negative integer.

The Venn Diagram below shows a summary of this topic. There are also some examples to help
you identify in which subset the real number belongs.

Arranging Real Numbers in Decreasing and Ascending Order
To arrange real numbers in decreasing and ascending order, compare the real numbers first.
The symbols > (greater than), <(less than) and =(equal to) are used in comparing the numbers.

The Law of Trichotomy

If a and b are real numbers, then, one and only one of the following statements is true: a>b,
a=b, or a<b.

Example:

1. Tell whether the first real number is greater than, less than or equal to the second real number.
a. 14; 34 LESS THAN
b. -6; -6.5 GREATER THAN
1
c. 1 2 ; 1.5 EQUAL

2. Plot the points on the real number line then arrange them in ascending and descending order.

Given set: {5, -7, 0, 4, -10}

Solution: Remember the number line. Compare the numbers and plot them on the number line. If the
real number is a positive number, it is plotted on the right side of 0. If the real number is a negative
number, then it is plotted on the left side of 0.

Negative numbers are less than zero and positive numbers are greater than zero. After plotting,
arrange the numbers starting from the left side to the right side. For ascending order and right to left
for the descending order.
