1. PREFACE
This manual has been prepared mainly to serve as a technical guide to the
personnel concerned with operation and maintenance of Sewage Treatment Plant at
CAPITAL, GURUGRAM.
It is intended to give basic principles of operation of equipments provided in

various treatment units, in order to give the operators an insight into the process
and operation of the equipments for trouble- free service of the plant. It is also
needless to say that for a long, trouble- free service of any plant, constant
maintenance of all the equipments is a must, without which no plant can function
satisfactorily.

III. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
BAR SCREEN CHAMNBER (B.S.):
The raw sewage is received is sump, where Bar Screen is installed to retain coarse
and floating matter found in sewage, thereby protecting pumps, valves, pipelines
and other appurtenances from damage of clogging. The Bar Screen consists of
equally spaced parallel bars. The screenings arrested on Bar Screen are raked
manually at intervals depending on the clogging frequency. The screened sewage
is then conveyed to Collection tank.
COLLECTION (EQUALIZATION) TANK (C.N.T.):
The sewage from the bar screen is collected in the equalization tank, where air is
provided for proper mixing & equalization of pollution parameters. Further
sewage from this tank is pumped to MBBR by Sewage Transfer Pumps.
AERATION (MBBR TANK):
The sewage treatment plant with state MBBR that can produce very good quality
with highest possible bacterial reduction. MBBR is the latest technology in waste
water treatment.
The treated sewage from this unit is then transferred to Tube settler

TUBE SETTLER
The aerated liquid from MBBR Tank will overflow to Tube Settler (TS) for
separation of solids from liquid..
FILTER FEED TANK
Treated water from tube settler is store in this tank and then will be pumped
through MGF & ACF
SLUDGE HOLDING TANK (S.H.T.):
The sludge formed due to effective settling in Tube Settler Tank is collected at the
bottom of the tank & then transferred to sludge sump for collection & storage.
Further this sludge is then pumped to Filter Press for dewatering & formation of
Sludge Cake.
Centrifuge:
The sludge is pumped from SHT with the help of centrifuge Feed Pumps for
dewatering of sludge. It helps in removal of water from sludge and thus water &
sludge cakes are separated. The filtrate formed in this procedure is again recycled
in equalization tank.

VII. COMPONENTS MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
Recommended spares for all rotating equipments like pumps, motor is kept in
stock for maintenance free operation e.g. bearings, impeller, seals etc.
Greasing of bearing and moving parts of all rotating equipment must be done
periodically. Further O&M manual of each rotating equipment should be read
carefully and operating instructions must be religiously followed.
a) PROPRITORY (MECHANICAL)
1. Bar Screen:
i) Check the accumulation of floating debris, plastic materials &

suspended solids (Size > 10mm).
ii) Clean the screen when such accumulation occurs

VIII. TROUBLE SHOOTING OF ROTATING EQUIPMENT
1. For any rotating equipment prime over i.e. motor is essential. Please fill in
grease of suitable type in the bearings of motor for front and rear bearings
periodically. This will avoid jamming of the motors.
2. For pumps shaft seal, gland packing, checking periodically for any leakage
is essential. If leakage is found tighten the gland packing or replace the
gland packing.
3. Do not run the pump dry for long time.
4. If the pump is idle for some time, it may get stuck or locked in place. This
stucking is usually due to film of dust or dirt developed between the impeller
and pump body. Rotate the shaft manually by hand to ensure free rotation.
5. If pump is found to be choked open the casing and clean the impellor.
6. For chemical dosing pump, please check fuse in case of stoppage of pumps.
Replace, if found faulty.
7. For all types of valves like butterfly, ball, diaphragm valves. Please apply
lubricant oil periodically on spindle for ease of operation.
8. If it is observed that diaphragm valve is passing/ leaking, open the bonnet

and replace the diaphragm.
9. It is recommended that sensor of all level switches should be cleaned at

regular intervals.
10. Clean the tanks periodically for sludge removal.
