We are reaching out to you in hopes of your support and understanding following an
unfortunate, tragic incident that has left a trail of hurt, grief, sadness, and disappointment in
town officials. Following an ill-fated incident that involved a close family friend, Janet, and our
family dog, we are left distraught and in despair, and this pain has been exacerbated by early
media reports that included false, inflammatory statements. With deep sympathy and
condolences, we feel for Janet’s family and deeply grieve this incredible loss.
Now, our grief is being compounded as we await the findings of the police report. In the
meantime, a Disposal Order (i.e., an order to kill our family dog, named Dexter) has been issued
by the Town, and we are appealing this decision to the Department of Agriculture because we
have found the Disposal Order to contain details that are factually inaccurate or misleading.
Further, we do not believe that Dexter’s personality (which has been only gentle and
affectionate) would have transformed without any provocation. We believe the facts have thus
far been misconstrued to twist a tragic incident.
In the time that we cared for and loved Dexter in our home, he has been a loving and
exceptionally affectionate dog. Over twenty letters were sent in to the Town from family, friends,
and Suffield neighbors with first-hand experience of Dexter’s gentle temperament; Janet herself
had been over our home and been around Dexter multiple times. We are still not sure of all of
the facts that transpired that day.
What we do know to be true is that Dexter is a dog who needs love, support, and affection.
Under the care of the Town during this appeal process, he is torturously being kept confined and
away from all contact and stimulation. The Town recently informed us that we cannot visit,
touch, hold, or comfort our dear Dexter while he is kept in isolation pending our appeal of the
Disposal Order to the Department of Agriculture.
What is happening to Dexter is unfair, unkind, and unnecessary. We believe that the Town is
attempting to keep us from Dexter in an attempt to strong-arm us into euthanizing Dexter and to
keep us from pursuing our due process rights. My (Annie’s) 93-yr-old mother, along with the rest
of our family, is grieving immensely over Janet, and the cruel treatment of Dexter is adding
further pain. We would like nothing more than the peace of mind to know that Dexter could
receive some comfort via contact with our family – preferably through home confinement with
any conditions that the Town sees fit to impose (including a hold harmless clause for the Town) --
while our appeal to the Department of Agriculture is pending.
Since appeals with the Department of Agriculture have historically taken years to be heard, we
have also made the alternative offer to the Town to send Dexter to a sanctuary out-of-state.
Although this would put an immediate end to the appeals process we desire, it would serve to
end Dexter’s isolation and torture, and close this matter for the Town of Suffield.
Sincerely,
Suffield

Jess Ctrescue I have read the ridiculous inflammatory statements from various sites and they
disgusted me. People are hateful! I’m sorry your going through all this but I have NO DOUBT that
something transpired that provoked him. Perhaps the chair being brought out heightened the
situation? Either way, I wish you luck with DOA as we all know what they have done to people
throughout CT who have experienced the same treatment. I for one, know how much time
you dedicate to helping animals and I thank you for your life’s work and dedication. I imagine this

Jess Ctrescue Teresa Catalano Kowall yes seriously I am factoring in the chair. I know exactly what
animals can do in heightened situations as I’ve seen it many times. I’m not blaming her death in
the chair. I’m saying the chair and any raised voices may have played a very real part in the
excitement level and heightened a situation. A rookie would know this. Go read the CDC reports
on fatalities and you’ll see this occurs many times. The situations are a very real factor.

Jodi Soucie Yost Jess Ctrescue you are right. I bet the noise/stimulation was a factor. That’s very
easily seen in this owners birthday video for her mom.
The noise was too much stimulation for the dog (evidenced by his gnarl and stature at the end of
the birthday video).
What is sad is that the owner, while an animal advocate, isn’t a very intelligent animal advocate.
After seeing that birthday video, and Dexters reaction, he should have been isolated any time
there was a gathering with noise. For HIS protection as well.
It’s sad that these owners did not protect their dog. Rather they chose to bury their heads in the
sand and pretended he’s “a good boy who just needs love!”

They attack for many reasons. Some that aren’t even apparent. And some that aren’t logical.
Pit bulls, specifically, are super territorial. My dog will not tolerate my husband hugging me. He
hates it. He’s THAT protective of me. I know this. I don’t hug my husband in front of him. But if
he attacked my husband because we were hugging, I’d put him down.
I can only protect him so much. The rest is innate animal instinct and some of that can’t be
rationalized with. They, unfortunately, don’t speak human speak.
I had a Rottweiler previously who was the most well behaved dog as he was socialized to
extreme. He went to work daily with my husband. But he HATED garbage trucks. HATED!! Ever
seen a 120lb dog lunge up a couch towards a bay window?? I saw it every Monday when the
garbage truck came. And if he ever broke that window and attacked the garbage man, I would
have put him down.
I have no idea why he hated garbage trucks. I brought him home at 7 weeks old and as far as I
know, he had no bad experiences with garbage trucks in his first 7 weeks of life. But the hate was
real. And yes, for no reason.

Annie Cowan Brown
Annie Cowan Brown So you want to save the life of a dog that killed someone? Clearly you are
deranged. As a volunteer at the National Victims of Canine Attacks Support Network since 2012
I’ve worked with families of those severely and fatally injured in dog attacks. The MAJORITY of
these attacks are from pit bulls and the MAJORITY of those are well loved and gentle family dogs
that all of a sudden snapped. When society puts the rescuing of misunderstood animals ahead of
the lives of people, this is what happens. Your history of promoting dangerous dog breeds stands
as a testimony to all that you don’t truly care about human safety. I hope that Janet’s family will
hold you accountable and responsible for her brutal death that has already been ruled a dogbite
related fatality by the coroner. There is NO SOLUTION other than putting this dog down. Please
stop twisting the truth into something that makes you seem less culpable. It’s disgusting and
disrespectful to the victims of these dogs!

to death and you think it should not be destroyed? Unbelievable! I hope the dog is destroyed
ASAP before it kills someone else!

Shayla Vincent Sick...absolutely sick to think that after a poor innocent woman, (who was
supposedly your friend) was mauled to DEATH by your dog, that you would want to save your
dog...I just have a hard time wrapping my head around this...clearly the dog is a danger to
human life. That poor woman should not have died such a tragic and gruesome death. Do
everyone a favor and put the damn dog down!

mauled your “friend”. Her life was infinitely more important than that vicious blood sport dog.

Pamela Cressey Gileno Your animal KILLED a person. I can’t believe you think your monster dog

The victim was an elderly woman; not exactly a threat🤬♀
It would be blatantly irresponsible for your family to continue harboring an animal that has

I dont even blame Dexter. He has to die, because there is nothing else to do with him, but it isnt
his fault that he did what he was bred to do. He was almost certainly wagging his tail furiously
the whole time. For aroused pit bulls, gripping, shaking and mauling is self rewarding behavior,
just as retrieving is self rewarding for a labrador.

Sidney Metis Continuously sick and twisted! The dog killed a 95-year-old woman. Looks like now
you’re trying to blame either her or the caregiver?! Because that’s the only alternative for what
you’re saying here. Do you know how many times a pitbull has killed somebody with the exact
same history? Oh and you seem to be lying about the fact that this dog has been in the past. You
lied to the police about what happened. You weren’t even there and claimed that the dog was
just excited and that she died from the fall. You just need to stop! Do the right thing and put the
dog down! I can’t even imagine somebody wanting to save a dog that tour an elderly woman
apart! Seriously, I don’t know if I’ve ever been this disgusted in a person! And that says a lot !!
Stop sugarcoating it. Your dog killed an elderly woman. You deserve to go to jail, the dog
deserves to get put down. Nothing less. I don’t know how you live with yourself!

Carolyn Lathrop I am a dog person. I adore dogs beyond all reason. But I also know a lot about
dogs. You do not, and a woman is dead because of your ignorance.
Dexter is almost certainly a purebred pit bull. I strongly doubt he has even a tiny bit of "pointer"
in him. Do you know what pit bull breeders mean when they brag about how "game" the dogs
they breed are? It means they will race across a pit, attack with no provocation whatsoever and
keep up the attack until the victim is dead. They breed for this trait. You, and Dexter's victim,
experience the consequences of entirely predictable pit bull behavior.

Diane Burns I cannot even begin to imagine the horror of Hornish's mother witnessing or
hearing the screams of her friend as she was being eaten alive by the "family pit bull dog". The
poor woman. Is the elderly woman being held hostage in her own home while keeping her
mouth shut as Annie Hornish brings in dangerous dogs to threaten her life? I can't imagine the
terror of thinking my own daughter was trying to "save" the dog that killed one of my best
friends. Psychological elder abuse!
