CHAPTER 2( PHYSICS)
3. Name a variable that does not have any effect on the frictional force.
4. What is a drag?
5. Name two natural and two man-made bodies that have streamlined shape.
Natural
-bird
-fish
Man-made
-aeroplane
-boat
6. Give two activities from our daily lives to exemplify when friction is desired and two for
when friction is not desired.
Friction is desired:
-For writing
-for rubbing
Friction is not desired
-lifting a heavy thing
-sliding on slides
7. How does a lubricant help in reducing friction?
. When Lubricants are applied ,it fills the irregularities and make the surface smooth and regular . This is how
Lubricants help in reducing friction .
8. What are the factors that determine the magnitude of friction between two surfaces?
9. Briefly explain the concept of fluid friction with the help of a suitable example.
When a streamlined object travels in a fluid (can be a liquid or gas) its edges cut the fluid which increases its
speed. For example a boat ,we always see a boat to be in a streamlined shape ,neither in square nor circular. It is
because it is the only shape which helps in travelling at a great speed in fluid i.e. the sky. Similarly we can take
example of an aeroplane, a bird or a fish.
10. What are ball bearings? Where and why are they used?
A ball bearing is a bearing that is used in vehicles such as cars etc. to reduce the rolling friction between the
wheels of the car and the road.
13. How does the force of friction cause things to heat up?
When two things rub against each other ,frictional force is created which generates heat.
14. How does the streamlined shape of an aeroplane help in the reduction of the fuel
consumption of the same?
16. Why is powder sprinkled on the carom board before starting a game?
17. Why does one use soap in order to remove a tight ring from the finger?
18. Explain why bicycles are easier to pedal when their tires are fully pumped up with air.
Science Class: 8
19. What is sliding friction? Give some examples which show that sliding friction is beneficial
to us.
21. Explain the fact that when two things rub together, friction takes energy of motion and converts it to heat with
the help of an example.
22. With the help of a suitable graphic organizer, illustrate the significance of friction in our lives.
23. With the help of a suitable graphic organizer, illustrate the different types of friction.
24. An apple is falling down from a branch. Sketch and label the forces that pull the apple
down and the forces that slow the apple down.
25. We know that forces are characterised by their strength and direction.
Discuss the factors on which the strength of the frictional force depends on.
26. The game of cricket involves running, stopping, jumping, kicking, etc.
Discuss how friction helps the players in these activities.
