CHAPTER V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendation

derived from the assessment of Ergonomic workstation at Demsol Plastic Manufacturing

Inc.

Summary of Findings

Based on the evaluations and assessments on the current practices of lifting and

transporting of raw materials, the proponents have come up with the following findings:

1.1 Process

The researchers studied the layout of the company. Based on the result of the

study, the process at Demsol Plastic Manufacturing started in classifying the raw

materials by colour in the receiving area, After that, the workers will need some help

from the other workers for lifting the raw Materials in the jumbo sucks. While

transferring the raw materials in the classifying area, the workers need to go the weighing

scale for the weight of the raw materials. Then, they classified the raw materials by types

and needs to transfer in the grinding area. They grind the raw materials into a small part.

1.2 Condition of Workers

The researchers used Nordic questionnaire to determine the condition of the

workers. The current condition of the transport workers at Demsol Plastic

Manufacturing, are experiencing job risks according to the result of survey. Most of the

workers have pain in the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist and lower back that tend to the

deceleration of their movements. Workers experienced the musculoskeletal discomfort

due to the awkward posture while lifting and transporting the loaded jumbo sack full of

raw materials.

1.2.1 Lifting Position

The position of the workers while lifting the raw materials was so awkward based

on the observation of the researchers. The workers encountered risk factors while lifting

the raw materials. They exert so much force for lifting process and also in transferring

raw materials to the next process. The body of the workers are twisted, their elbow was

raised to the shoulder and their wrist was bended and twisted.

Conclusions

After the results of the study had been evaluated, the following conclusions were

drawn:

1. The existing process in performing their task can cause the risk factors. The

workers are uncomfortable doing their task. When the workers are on the lifting process,

they take unnecessary break for stretching to be relieved from fatigue.

2. Through the result of Nordic Survey Questionnaire, it was evident that workers are

exposed to high risk factors such as unrelieved continuous motion and prolonged

awkward posture while doing their job, thus preventing them from doing their job well

and efficiently.

3. The assessments made on the lifting and transporting process revealed that existing

workstation causes musculoskeletal disorder to the workers. The lifting and transporting

process based on the ergonomic assessments such as REBA, RULA, and OWAS with

indices of 9.0, 7.0 and 2.0.

4. An Ergonomic lifting hoist in the workstation was designed and developed, which

has a 109 cm handled based on the data gathered in the workers.

2. The integration of the Ergonomic workstation in the new process eliminated the

awkward posture since the workers are comfortably working with the new process.

REBA with a score of 2.0; RULA with a score of 4.0; OWAS with a score of 1.0 were

determined.

Recommendations

With the findings obtained in the course of the study, the researchers had the

following recommendations:

1. The prototype can be improved by using high quality materials and can be further

improved by making it an automated adjustable lifter. The company should also

consider that the height of the improved process must correspond to the average

elbow height of their workers.

2. The researchers recommend further study regarding the whole structure of the

ergonomically designed lifting hoist for future improvements and innovation.

3. It is also recommended that the work environment will be improved to support the

other processes and give considerations in the welfare of the workers because

manpower is one of the most important assets of the company.

4. The researchers also recommend to have made 5s at the receiving and classifying

area, to make the lifting hoist travel easier.
