Recently ThinkQuest New York City, a non-profit organization, raised
the bar at its Third Annual Internet Challenge Awards Event. B5 were
special guest and helped to give out awards to talented Elementary,
middle and high

As we go to press, Pretty Ricky has

the #1 R&B single with Grind With Me!
Needless to say, now a lot of Word
Up! readers want to "grind" with them
and arepicking up their Atlantic
Records debut CD, Bluestars!

T
here is no stoppin' these Miami-based musical brothers who are comprised of three rappers
and one R&B singer! Cuties Spectacular, Slick ‘Em, and Baby Blue were influenced by The
Jackson 5, 'N Sync, Immature, Nelly, Tupac, and The Notorious B.I.G., while the group’s
lone resident R&B balladeer, Pleasure, was honing in on Usher, Keith Sweat, Stevie Wonder, and
Gerald Levert. The guys also say they were heavily influenced by their dad Blue Smith—who gave
them a great work ethic! You can hear all these different influences on their debut CD, Bluestars, a
title that is obviously a tribute to dear ol' dad!
The guys have been creating a buzz in native Miami for three years, but they did not get their
"big break" until December 2004 when Atlantic Records Co-Chairman/COO Craig Kallman, heard
about the boys and granted them an a cappella audition in his hotel room. The rest, as they say, is
musical history—the bros were signed to a record deal on the spot! They take charge of their own
business decisions and have an entrepreneurial spirit as opposed to just beingcontrolled by a major
record label—they have their own record production company called Blue Star Entertainment
(which includes their own label, Blue StarRecords, distributed by Atlantic). With songs like
Girlfriend, Age Ain’t Nothing, and Would You Be Mine,it’s obvious that Pretty Ricky is out to
impress female music fans. They areconfident in their craft, and Spectacular tells us, "We are the
sex symbols of the South. It’s like a team full of Jordans where everybody is a star. To which Baby
Blue adds, “You can’t compare us because what we’re doing ain’t never been done before. We hit
every aspect of music. We do clubmusic, party music, love songs, ‘I hate you’ songs. We try to
cover everything,since we’re a hip-hop group. Our main focus is toward the ladies.Everything we do
is for the ladies.” 'Nuff said?
