CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Religion and family life has increased markedly over

the past twenty years, furthermore, the impact of religion

in one's belief is no beginning to be recognized as a

significant issue which deserves greater study.

Religion is a fundamental part of human experience and

it is deeply concerned with questions of making sense and

meaning of world and our existence. Religion is not only

personal but also social. Religion can affect all and it

can change them physically, emotionally and also

spiritually.

Kowalczyk (2006) states that belief influences human

behavior because every religion is different, so their

beliefs are different. Belief system can influence human

behavior. Most people believe in only one religion that

some believe in one God. Most people believe in one

religion but they respect other’s religion. Religion only

has different in beliefs system but mostly believes in one

God. They have different perception but all of them believe

that there is a God who is protecting and guiding them in

everything.

All religions are persuading people to believe in God

and the good influence of this people will become positive

in life, teaching them how to be good people. Bad persons

can change because religion influences them.

According to Ozorak (2009), parents typically teach

their children religious beliefs. But also its up to the

individual to decide what constitutes support for a belief

because everyone has freedom to think for himself and to do

whatever he wants to do. Everyone has a freedom to choose

what religion he wants. If he thinks that religion has good

influence to him, he will believe in that religion even if

his parent does not want their child to change his religion

they do not have the right to stop them because every child

has the right to choose.

According to Wilson and Janoski (2005), the

connection between church membership, church activism and

volunteering to help others solve community problem is more

likely among members of churches that emphasize social

concerns. If a person is always going to church, it gives

him a positive thinking to be a good person because he is

always in the church. The result of being church active is

very positive. One can do many things that he cannot do

before and there will be social consciousness. This is all

because of the members of churches. The church also has a

rules that it has to follow and these rules are positive,

will become more active in church and will help people to

become humble and better persons.

Pew Research Center (2012) more than ninety percent

of the representative of American populations believed in

God, Half of the American stated the religions are

important in their lives.

According to Tobacyk, (2004), apart from religious

spiritually, paranormal and magical ideation are also

associated with a person’s individual belief system.

Paranormal beliefs relate to paranormal phenomena that

violate basic limiting principles in science. The term

magical ideation refers to beliefs about causality, in

which individuals believe they have some degree of control

over events that defies currently accepted physical laws.

Markle (2010) mentioned that, many studies support

a significant positive but complex correlation between

religious and paranormal belief variables, where higher

religious scores have been associated with stronger

paranormal beliefs.
As cited by Clarke DT (2007), religious practices,

and personal beliefs are not only important for culture and

social life, but they also seem to play a significant role

with respect to individual physical and mental health.

Crockett and Voas (2006) are the authors to

explore the Generations of decline religious change in 20th

Century Britain. A number of factors have contributed to

declining the generations around the world in the past

years. The major things to do the generational decline are

the reasons to have religious affiliation such as regular

attendance at worship and religious belief to show the

nearly identical rates.

The role of religious belief and age

differentiation has been pointed the manner in which people

handle the issue of death as a phenomenon. In individualism

have a significant factor in the understanding of the way

people perceive and react to death and the end of life.

According to Jung (2009) individual have differences in age

and life of experiences also about the perception of death.

Glendinning and Bruce (2003), states that the

presence of alternative spirituality practices within

general culture and relationship to institutional religion

are examined using national survey data part of the 2001.

Alternative practices found to divide into two groups of

interest. Better educated woman are more likely to engage

with holistic practices associated a minority of younger

less well educated women. Important in their lives

churchgoers find divination to religion while use and

salience of a range of holistic practices is acceptable

among churchgoers, among non-attenders and the secular(once

allowance has been made for the connections between

alternative practices, gender, age and education)This

underscores a focus on personal well-being rather than

alternative spirituality within the general culture. The

study findings are used to asses claims for a spiritual

revolution.

In view of all these, the researchers decided to

conduct this study to determined and asses the influence of

religion in one’s belief of Grade12 students at Bongabon

Senior High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the influence of religion

in one’s belief.

Specifically, this study intends to answer the

following questions:

1. How may the profile of worshipper ~ respondent be

described in terms of;

1.1 age; 1.5 educational attainment of parents;

1.3 sex;

1.3 civil status;

1.4 religion;

2. What is the level of influence of religion in one’s

belif in terms of;

2.1 perception in life

2.2 attitude

2.3 social consciousness

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile

of worshippers/respondents level of influence of religion

in one’s belief of worshipper?

Hypothesis

There is no significant relationship between the

profile of worshippers/respondents and the influence of

religion in the belief of worshipper.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be beneficial to the

following persons:

Worshipper –will give information to someone who enjoys or

values a particular thing very much.

Definitions of Terms

The following terms were defined in this study

Assessing – this refers to judge or decide the amount,

value, quality, or importance of something.

Attitude - this refers to a settled way of thinking or

feeling about someone or something, typically one that is

reflected in a person's behavior.

Belief – this refers to an acceptance that a statement is

true or that something exists.

Influence – this refers to the capacity of religion to have

an effect on the character, development, or behavior of

someone or something, or the effect itself.

Perception in life – this can be defined as the way you

think about or understand someone or something. Your

perception in life is determined by your past experiences,

values, beliefs, and overall psychological makeup.

Perception is your reality. It is the way you see the

world.

Religion – this refers to the belief in and worship of a

superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or

gods.
Social consciousness - this refers to a social awareness,

as consciousness shared by individuals within a society. It

essentially means to be conscious or aware of the problems

within a society or community.

Worshipper – this refers to a person who has religious

faith, believer, or what we called worshiper.

CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology describes and

explains about the different procedures including research

design, respondents of the study, research instrument,

validity and reliability of the instrument, data gathering

procedure, as well as the statistical treatment and

analysis.

Research Design

This study used descriptive survey research design

where the main purpose is to observe, describe, and

document aspects of situation as it naturally occurs and

sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis

generation or theory development. Survey research design is

used when the researcher intends to provide a quantitative

or numeric description of trends, attitudes or opinions by

studying a sample of population.

McCombes (2005) defines descriptive research aims to

accurately and systematically describe a population,

situation or phenomenon. It can answer what, when, where,

when and how questions, but not why questions. To determine

cause and effect, experimental research is required.

Kowalczyk (2006) states that sometimes an individual

wants to know something about a group of people. Maybe the

individual is a would-be senator and wants to know who

they're representing or a surveyor who is looking to see if

there is a need for a mental health program. He said that

descriptive research is a study designed to depict the

participants in an accurate way. More simply put,

descriptive research is all about describing people who

take part in the study.

Moreover, according to Calderon (2008), as cited by

Alberto et al (2011), descriptive method is also known as

statistical research, it describes data and characteristics

about the population or phenomenon being studied; This

method is used to gather information in order to test

hypothesis or to answer questions concerning the currents

status of the subject of the study.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The population of the study were the Grade 12

students in Bongabon Senior High School. To determine the

sample size, the researcher has used the Slovin’s formula

in which n = the size of the sample N= the size of the

population e= the margin of error which is 5%. Applying the

said formula, there were 237 students who were involved in

this study. These respondents were chosen using stratify

random sampling.

The sample size was determined using slovin formula

𝑁
𝑛=
1 + 𝑁ⅇ 2

581
N= Population 𝑛 = 1+581
̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅̅(0.05)2

n= sample = 237

e= margin of errors (5%)

Table 1

Distributions of Respondents According to Strands

STRANDS N n Percentage (%)

GAS 12 171 70 29.54%

HUMMS 12 150 61 25.74

STEM 12 160 65 27.43

ABM 12 100 41 17.30

TOTAL 581 237 100%

Table 1 presents the distribution of respondents

according to strand. It shows that Gas12 has the highest

number of respondents which is 70 or 29.54% of the total

population. This was followed by Stem12 with 65 or 27.43%

number of respondents, Humms12 with 61 or 25.74% number of

respondents, and Abm12 with 41 or 17.30% number of

respondents.

The finding shows that the sample size for Gas12 has

the highest number of respondents while the Abm12 has the

lowest number of respondents.

1. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

1.1 Data Gathering Instrument. The main instrument used in

this study was the questionnaire which was originally

written by the researcher themselves.

1.2 Description. The questionnaire was made up of two

parts. Part I asks questions about the profile of the

respondents while the second part asks questions about the

manifestation of religion in one’s belief.

1.3 Validation. Since the questionnaire was originally

designed by the researcher, this was subjected to face

validation. This was checked by researcher’s adviser for

critiquing and for suggestion. As a result, a statement was

reworded in such a way that it would elicit more objective

from the respondents.

1.4 Scoring. The following scales with their corresponding

weights and ranges for each point used were described to

determine the level of manifestation of religion in one’s

belief.

Assigned Rating scale Verbal Interpretations

Weight

1 2.33-3.00 Always

2 1.06732 Sometimes

3 1.030 -1.66 Rarely

4 1.00-1.44 Never

2. Administration and Retrieval of the Instrument.

The researcher administered and retrieved the

questionnaire, themselves. The researcher requested for

approval for the administration of the said questionnaire.

The researchers submit a title, after the title was

approved, the researchers searched for relevant literature.

The researcher sought permission from the administration of

Bongabon Senior High School. When approved, the researcher

went personally approached the target respondent and

explain to them the study that the researcher is presently

doing. The researcher also explained to them that their

cooperation mean a lot for the success of the said study.

Statistical Treatment

The researcher made use of statistical tools such as

the frequency count, percentage weighted mean and

correlation matrix.

In describing the profile of the respondents frequency

counts and percentage was used. The formula to this is:

P= F/N x 100

Where: F= frequency

N= number of respondents

P= percentage

To interpret and analyzed the data on the level of

manifestation of religion in one’s belief, the weighted

mean was used. The formula to this is:

WM= TFV/N
Where: WM= weighted mean

TFV= total frequency value

FV= frequency x value

N= number of respondents

To test the significant relationship between the profile of

the respondents and their research capabilities,

correlation matrix was used.
