Wolfson (JQR. N.S.X. 1-17) calls attention to two de-
finitions of time: (1) the Aristotelian definition, that
it is the number of sphereical movements; (2) the un-
Aristotelian definition that it is duration. The first view
gives time a partly real and partly ideal aspect, while
the latter makes it entirely ideal, independent of reality
and even preexistent. Averroes represents the first
view, and Avicenna and Algazali-the second view.
Our author then, Wolfson maintains, takes the un-
