Introduction

Background of the Study

Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another

person. Online threats and mean, aggressive, or rude texts, tweets, posts, or messages all
count. So does posting personal information, pictures, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass
someone else. It also includes photos, messages, or pages that don't get taken down, even
after the person has been asked to do so. In other words, it's anything that gets posted online
and is meant to hurt, harass, or upset someone else 20101.

Intimidation or mean comments that focus on things like a person's gender, religion,
sexual orientation, race, or physical differences count as discrimination, which is against the law
in many states. That means the police could get involved, and bullies may face serious
penalties.

Online bullying can be particularly damaging and upsetting because it's usually
anonymous or hard to trace. It's also hard to control, and the person being victimized has no
idea how many people (or hundreds of people) have seen the messages or posts. People can
be tormented nonstop whenever they check their device or computer. Also Online bullying and
harassment can be easier to commit than other acts of bullying because the bully doesn't have
to confront his or her target in person 20101.

Discrimination means treating a person unfairly because of who they are or because
they possess certain characteristics. If you have been treated differently from other people only
because of who you are or because you possess certain characteristics, you may have been
discriminated against 20192 .

But now in the modern society, discrimination could happen anytime and anywhere especially in
the online world where everyone could post anything anonymously. This made the researchers
curious about how online discrimination affect a person’s social interaction/communication
towards other people. The researchers wanted to conduct a study to investigate and to get a
further explanation.

The total population of grade eleven (11) students is one hundred twenty (120)
composed of one (1) strand which is ICT with four (4) sections. Researchers choose the ACLC
Commonwealth to conduct the survey.

Hypothesis

The Grade 11 ICT students had experienced the negative and positive effects of online
discrimination:

 Low Self - Esteem - they start to doubt their selves and became conscious at small
things.
 Builds up anger - some people kept quiet and doesn’t make any commotions and kept it
to their selves that causes them to build up such anger and explodes when they had
enough
 Became vengeful or violent - there are other people that became violent because of
extreme pain and anger from experiencing cyberbullying
 Long patience - people who are bullied online starts to learn or create such long
patience
 Motivation - for some people, they make it as a motivation which is proving their selves
to someone that they’re wrong

negative effects of online discrimination to the students.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on effects of online discrimination among Grade 11 students in ACLC
Commonwealth enrolled in S.Y. 2019-2020. This involves a survey for those who are
experiencing online discrimination in communication. The selection of respondents is only
limited, since not all the students are social media actives. This research intends to raise
awareness to problems of students in online discrimination, and how to solve their problem by
being aware on what they can do to avoid and set them free from online discrimination.
