STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Topic:

Land Pollution and Waste Management in the Grove Community.

Aims:

1. How activities that cause pollution affect the residents in the Grove
community?
2. How residence can reduce pollution in the Grove community?

Research Question:
What activities cause pollution in the Grove community?
REASON FOR SELECTING TOPIC AND COMMUNITY

TOPIC:
The reason we chose this topic is because it is of great interest to us to find out
what the residents in Grove think about land pollution and the ways in which the
residents of the Grove community dispose of their garbage.

COMMUNITY:
The reason we chose the Grove community is because land pollution has become
very prevalent in the area. So, it was relevant to conduct a survey to find out how
the residents dispose of their garbage and also suggest ways in which they can
ensure that the community will stay clean and eco-friendly.

implemented to ensure that your community remains clean and healthy.
The questionnaires will only take a few minutes. You are not required to state your name.
Place a tick () in the boxes provided and fill up the spaces provided where required. All
answers will be kept confidential and strictly for academic purposes. Thus, please answer
honestly and truthfully.

in the community of Grove. From the pie chart above it can be
seen that most persons dispose of solid waste (144º) followed by
Recyclable garbage (86.4º), Organic garbage (57.6º), Liquid waste
(43.2º) and Hazardous waste (28.8º).

ii. Figure 2 above depicts the respondents received from residents of

the Grove Community in relation to the ways in which they
dispose of their garbage. From the bar graph above it can be seen
that more than half of the total respondents dispose of their
garbage by using rubbish bin/drum (13) followed by the use of
River site/Trench area (5). A total of three (3) residents dispose of
their garbage by using open spaces that are in close proximity to
their homes. The graph above also shows a tie in which two (2)
residents dispose of their garbage near their home and two (2)
residents dispose of their garbage by using nearby containers.

iii. Figure 3 above show the frequency with which garbage is collected in the
community of Grove. From the line graph above, it can be seen that sixteen
(16) respondents agreed that garbage is collected once a week whereas six
(6) agreed that garbage is collected once every two weeks, two (2) agreed it
is collected once every three week and one (1) resident agreed that the
garbage is collected once a month.
THREE PROBLEMS THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH
GARBAGE DISPOSAL IN MY COMMUNITY ARE:
 Water Pollution
Water pollutions is the contamination of water as a result of human activities into
the natural environment. Water pollution is often caused by the discharge of
inadequately treated wastewater into natural bodies of water. This can lead to
public health problems. For example, people living downstream may use the same
polluted river water for drinking or irrigation. It can also cause harm to animal that
drink from such polluted water.

 Air and Land Pollution

Air pollution is one such form that refers to the contamination of the air,
irrespective of indoors or outside. A physical, biological or chemical alteration to
the air in the atmosphere can be termed as pollution. It occurs when any harmful
gasses, dust, smoke enters the atmosphere and makes it difficult for plants, animals
and humans to survive as the air becomes dirty.
Bad waste management practices can result in land and air pollution and can cause
respiratory problems and other adverse health effects as contaminants are absorbed
from the lungs into other parts of the body.

 Effect on Environment
A community with poor sanitation, smelly and with waste matter all over the place
does not attract good people, investors and tourist. Such communities tend to have
poor living standards. Everyone wants to live and visit places that are clean, fresh
and healthy.
ONE TYPE OF GARBAGE THAT CAN BE RECYCLED
AND ITS BENEFIT:

One type of garbage that could be recycled is oil. Waste oil from trucks and cars
engines cause huge environmental problems if you tip it down the drain. It pollutes
our rivers and seas, the wildlife that depends on them, and even the water we drink.
If waste oil is taken to a recycling center, it not only keeps our waterways clean but
can also be reprocessed into new products such as heating oil. Waste vegetable oil
made by frying food, for example can be turned into a useful kind fuel called
biodiesel.
THREE MEASURES/ STRATEGIES THE RESIDENTS OF
GROVE CAN IMPLEMENT TO ENSURE THAT THEIR
COMMUNITY REMAINS CLEAN AND HEALTHY ARE:

 HOSTING SEMINARS ON THE RECYCLING OF WASTER MATERIALS

IN THE COMMUNITY

Hosting seminars within the village and educating the residents on ways in
which they can reuse and recycle their garbage that would otherwise be thrown
away as trash. This seminar should also help residents to better understand and
identify waste materials can help the community and the environment by saving
money, energy and natural resources.

 OPENING WASTE DUMPS

Opening of water dumps within the village whereby there would be a few open
sites where trash is deposited and occasionally burned to reduce the volume of
the accumulating garbage.

 SANITARY LANDFILLS

A sanitary landfill is an excavation, or a hollow in the ground in which garbage

is dumped, compacted and covered daily with a fresh layer of dirt. This should
be done since it reduces odors caused by the rotten garbage and prevents air
pollution caused by periodic burning of waste in an open dump. This is so since
a soil layer is placed over the trash, compacted, and then generally sloped to
reduce water percolation into the garbage, underwater contamination can be
greatly reduced. The protective layer of soil also reduces insects and other pests
that could carry disease. The garbage can also be reclaimed – returned to some
previous use. For example, a stadium or a shopping mall can be built on the
site.
