Memorandum

Library Media Program Evaluation Summary

To: Principal
Cc: Media Committee Members
From: Joy Jensen & Shell Nelson

The memo is designed to give you an overview of the information discovered as Mrs.
Nelson and I reviewed the Georgia DOE 2010 Library Media Program Evaluation. We
were able to evaluate the different categories of the media program as well as brainstorm
ideas for improvement.

The rubric provides has three levels of proficiency; Basic, Proficient, and Exemplary.
The Categories included on this evaluation are: 1) Student Achievement and Instruction,
2) Staffing, 3) Facilities, Access, and Resources, 4) Administrative Support, and 5) Staff
Development.

Category 1 (Student Achievement and Instruction): in this category our Media Program
scored an Exemplary in all subsections. The media center at our school is a place where
learning is taking place and our media specialist is giving information literacy lessons
daily. From Haiku poetry to research projects not a moment of instruction is wasted.

Category 2 (Staffing), because our school does not receive Title I funds and our media
program only received a Basic for this category. We have one media specialist, and a
part time media clerk. Our media specialist does not get a lunch break and the clerk is
pulled out of the media center twice a week for tutoring. We do have many parent
volunteers, but not enough to make up for the lack of funds to fully staff our media
center. A recommendation would be to terminate the tutorials and allow the media clerk
to remain in the media center for her allotted hours.

Category 3 (Facilities, Access, and Resources) our school is exemplary in all areas of this
category. We have a smart board in the media center as well as multiple computers and
CPS units. In addition, flexible scheduling is honored in every way. In addition to print
and electronic resources we also have access to many online resources such as destiny,
Brainpop Jr., Safari Montage, and Worldbook Online.

Category 4 (Administrative Support) received an exemplary score in all but one category.
In Glynn County our SMCP is Linda Davis at Needwood Middle School. She organizes
all media meetings and handles vendor contracts. In addition

Category 5 (Staff Development) received a score of “proficient” in the only item in this
category. This is mainly due to time restraints on the part of the media specialist. While
the importance of staff development opportunities is recognized, it is often difficult to
find the time to plan and implement them due to the many responsibilities of the media
staff. We have a media advisory committee in place. Our media polices are established at
the district level and clearly communicate expectations. The only area in need of
improvement in this category was under the heading of funding spent on the media
program. Unfortunately, because our school is in a bit of a budget crunch, some funding
was reallocated to other school needs. We would suggest that the practice of removing
funds from the media budget be avoided in the future.
